Mileage: about one mile, round trip Elevation gain: a couple hundred feet Directions: From Eugene, take I-105/Hwy 126 (McKenzie Highway) East out of town for over 40 miles. Pass through the town of McKenzie Bridge. Five miles later, turn Right on Hwy 242 (Old McKenzie Highway). This road is curvy and restricted to vehicles over 35 feet long, but it is also well-paved and easy to drive if you drive slow. Follow it for no more than 10 miles to Proxy Falls Trailhead. There's lots of parking on the left and right sides of the highway, but during peak season, expect it to be pretty full.
Proxy Falls Trail is a sweet little hike through pleasant forest and over an old lava field. It's amazing to see trees struggling up through the rocks.
We went in May of 2006, a heavy year for rain and snowfall, so the creek was high. Some better photos might be taken later in the year, when the falls dry up a bit so it's easier to see the moss on the rocks that seem to create the most incredible professional photos. The falls themselves are awe-inspiring, and the higher water level made them seem much more powerful.
For a loop trip, start at the trailhead on the West end of the parking lot. You'll climb over a lava field, then come to a junction. Take the Right junction first to see the lower falls. Return to the junction and take the other route (what would have been a Left when you first came upon it). You'll come to a second junction, and take a Right here to view the upper falls. These falls seem just as large, and empty into a pool at the bottom. Funny thing is, there is no outlet to this pool so the water from the falls seeps underground. Return back to that last junction and walk straight to get back to the trailhead.
