Fred was born on June 21, 1939 and grew up in San Francisco. He had wonderful loving parents and a large extended family close by (grandparents, cousins, etc,). Growing up in San Francisco in the 40's and 50's was very different from today. Children had much more freedom. Fred lived in the Sunset District, just one block from Golden Gate Park. Mothers would pack up a lunch for their kids, and Fred with his pals would often spend the day in the park. Their mothers simply saying "Be home in time for dinner."

In high school, Fred competed as a swimmer and diver. Diving became his passion, and after graduation, he met the man who would become one of the most important men in his life. This was Hobie Billingsley, his college diving coach. Hobie became much more than just a coach to Fred. He was a mentor, a role model, and a life-long friend. Fred followed Hobie to Indiana Univ. where Fred graduated with a B.A. degree and a teaching credential. After college, he served in the Navy. Following his service, Hobie got Fred his first teaching job in Ohio. While there, Fred received his Master's degree from Kent State. Again Hobie helped Fred get a job back in California where Fred coached diving for the Santa Clara Swim Club (for 20+ years) and taught school in Fremont ( for almost 30 years).

Fred married Mary Lou in 1967 and they had two daughters, Jill and Wendy. They moved into their new home 45 years ago. Fred loved this neighborhood and all the friends he made. Mary Lou and friends celebrated their 51" wedding anniversary in March of 2018.

After retiring, Fred enjoyed working on the restoration of his beloved 1932 Model B Ford, visiting his cabin in Lake County, and traveling. One of his hobbies was metal detecting, and he took three trips to England where under the supervision of British archeologists, used his metal-detecting skills at various sites. He found and donated artifacts that are currently on display at the Norwich Museum. In the course of his life, he visited England, Japan, the Philippines, Thailand, Australia, Hong Kong, Canada, Mexico, and Venezuela. He also traveled extensively throughout the U.S. He and Mary Lou took several cross country road trips. Fred and daughter Wendy enjoyed a two week trip through the South and Southwest. He joined daughter Jill and son -in-law Brian on a trip on a trip to Utah to visit Bryce Canyon, Zion National Park, and The Grand Canyon. In June last year, both daughters joined their father on a trip back to Indians Univ. to join in the celebration of Hobie's 90th birthday.

So, Fred lived a full and productive life. It was "a life filled with much love, great friendships, and an abundance of happiness."

Sadly to say we have lost another long time member. Recently our dear friend and club member Jack McMahan has passed on. For many years Jack has been our club Treasurer. We will all miss you Jack. Jack Mc Mahan was born March 3, 1947 in Great Bend, KS and passed away May 3, 2017 at Kaiser Hospital in Santa Clara, CA. Services and internment were in Great Bend, KS. Jack graduated from Great Bend High School with the class of 1965 and attended Hutchinson Community College where he studied electronics, graduating in 1967. In 1968, Jack moved to Alameda, Calif., to begin his 20 years of service in the United States Navy. After his Navy career, he worked for the County of Santa Clara. Daniel Joseph Lohberger

Daniel Joseph Lohberger - Resident of Milpitas, CA - May 3, 1938 - Mar. 30, 2016.

Daniel Joseph Lohberger was born in Shattuck, OK, and raised on a farm in Allison, TX, as a young boy. He used to enjoy occasionally returning for wheat harvest and running the combine. In his teen years he went to live in the LA area until he joined the U.S. Navy for 4 years. He was a dedicated worker, serving 35 years in the safe and lock industry. Danny lived in Milpitas for 45 years where he served his community in many ways, such as being a Cub Scoutmaster and working on the Sounds Committee to have a sound wall installed along the freeway. He raised his family in Milpitas and always enjoyed boating, fishing and hunting. After retiring he enjoyed metal detecting, served as Vice President of the local Club, joined several Evidence Recovery missions for local law enforcement agencies, learned lapidary, traveled for geocaching, played bingo, made many new friends, and is remembered for his bright smile and good natured laugh. Danny is survived by loving wife Sarah; devoted children, Debbie Lohberger of Elk Grove, CA; Charles Lohberger (Tom) of Camas, WA; Joey Lohberger (Kathy) of Eureka, CA; Susan Lee of Pompano Beach, FL; and Michael Lee of Wheaton, MN; 8 grandchildren, 2 great-grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews. He is also survived by his siblings, Carolyn Morello of Cypress, CA; Joe Rucker of Amarillo, TX; Alton Lohberger (Ariel) and Suzanne Lohberger, all of Allison, TX. He was preceded in death by his father Verne Lohberger of Allison, TX; mother Geraldine Larsen of Hemet, CA; and brother Howard Lohberger of Sweetwater, OK. Interment will be April 15, 2016 at the San Joaquin Valley National Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the American Cancer Society.

Michael Froess-2016

San Jose Long time resident Michael Froess Sr., passed away unexpectedly at his mountain home on February 19, 2016 at 74 years of age. He is survived by loving family members including his wife Marjorie of 55 years, his children Marguerite, Michael Jr., and Matthew, nine grandchildren, one great grandchild, and his brothers Raymond and Philip. Michael was a man of strong principals, devoted to his family and faith. He and his wife were enthusiastic motor home travelers. Together they had many adventures traveling throughout the United States and Canada making many new friends along the way. Michael also enjoyed blacksmithing, metal detecting and wood working. He will be deeply and forever missed.

The club has lost two very cherished members. Active in the club for many years, Chuck and Nadyne both served on the Board and held elected positions. Their endless generosity and efforts were always present at club functions. They will be deeply missed.

James Miguelgorry recently passed away this February 20th, 2014. He will be missed by his weekend detecting buddies.

Our dear friend metal detecting enthusiast, great love of gold mining and gold panning, hunting and fishing has passed away this March 27th, 2014. Larry had many friends and would always be found at the old Treasure Hunter store in Campbell, CA. You will be missed Larry.
