WOOLEN MILLS CHINATOWN ARCHAEOLOGICAL EXCAVATION

TAYLOR and GUADALUPE, SAN JOSE, CALIFORNIA

Hey gang. Looks like we finally made it. Everyone had a great time assisting the Caltrans archaeologists on Saturday and Sunday the 15th and 16th of October, 1999.

The first five pictures were shot in May when Mark Hylkema of Caltrans gave a guided tour of the Woolen Mills Chinatown site at Taylor and Guadalupe.

Paul and Terry along with other interested viewers attended the tour.

Here we see archaeologists busy at different stages on the site.

After a great tour, we headed home anticipating the day we as a club would be back to assist the archaeologists.

WOOLEN MILLS CHINATOWN

OCTOBER 15th and 16th, 1999

And away we go!

Mark Espinosa said "I think I'm hittin' glass."

Think these Chinese lost any Roman coins?

We'll settle for any coins!

Lunch Break

Hey, isn't that a coin I see down there?

I know there's bottles down there!

Now there's a hard working group!

Fred and Tom's remnants of a tin stove

These ladies were good diggers also!

O.K. folks, here's our plan of attack-

Hey Dan, how many Chinese cash coins today?

I'm king of the world!

Tom, you have been busy!

Glenn Hildebrand emailed me that evening and said, "We always hear stories of fantastic rings found. You should see the one I found in my bath tub after today's dig!!!

Hey Jim, Did I ever tell you about the time I buried a large cent and asked Brian to come over and check out my target? No Dan, but I dug a coon skin miner's hat down five feet in mud but never found the miner!

Mark Hylkema had his mother in law, Jean Sickler, a member of the San Jose Antique Bottle Collectors Association on the job also.

Now, if I'm not mistaken, we parked our car over in this area somewhere.

Well, we all had a great time and made a lot of wonderful friends. Let's do it again. Happy Hunting,
