12/30/98 Arizona Wildcats (11-1)

AZ Wildcat Central
Official Holiday Bowl website

Wally's prediction: Nebraska 23 Arizona 17
Actual score: Nebraska 20 Arizona 23

Nebraska played in a non-New Year's Day bowl for the first time since
1980 and turned in their first 4-loss season since 1968. This game was
ugly, and could have been worse had Arizona not erased 2 TDs with
penalties. The Huskers turned the ball over 4 times and never did get on
track offensively. They managed only 87 rushing yards on 34 carries,
the second lowest output of the season (73 yds against OSU).

Nebraska 0 13 0 7 20
Arizona 6 3 0 14 23

Game summary

Wally's view from the cheap seats:
What a season! Nine starters,
including 3 Quarterbacks and 3 I-backs, missed a total of 45 games
because of injuries. You gotta wonder what might have been
had Newcombe, Evans, and company stayed healthy all season.
But Nebraska has a young and talented team. If they can avoid
injuries, the Cornhuskers will be right back in the thick of it in 1999.
See you in Iowa City on September 4th.

11/27/98 Colorado Buffaloes

Buffalo chips
Wally's prediction: Nebraska 34 Colorado 24
Actual score: Nebraska 16 Colorado 14

The Huskers overcame a sluggish offensive effort to narrowly defeat
Colorado and extend their streak of 9-win seasons to 30. The Buffs
shut down NU's running game and held the Husker offense to 3 field
goals. The Husker defense prevailed by forcing 6 QB sacks while
holding Colorado to 246 yards. NU kicker Kris Brown set an NCAA
record with 217 career extra points and tied the record for attempts
at 222.

Wally's view from the cheap seats:
A win's a win. You gotta
wonder if the offense remembers what the endzone looks like. Correct
me if I'm wrong, but the last time the Husker offense went without a
touchdown was the game against the British in 1776. (Actually, the
last time was 1961).

NU is going to the Culligan Holiday Bowl in San Diego.

11/14/98 Kansas State Wildcats

KSU
Wally's prediction: Nebraska 24 Kansas State 21
Actual score: Nebraska 30 Kansas State 40

The Husker offense could not get on track in the 2nd half as they
struggled for nearly 19 minutes to gain a 1st down.
KSU almost stopped themselves with 5 turnovers but Michael Bishop & Company
would not be denied. The game ended with a controversial no call of a facemask violation
against Eric Crouch. But it would not matter....Nebraska lost to a better team on this day.
What penalty?

Wally's view from the cheap seats:
Injuries have devastated the Huskers all season as their era of conference dominance
came to an end. But you can bet it won't take Nebraska 30 years for their next win
against KSU! The Huskers will clean out the kitty litter next year in Lincoln.

11/07/98 Iowa State Cyclones

ISU
Wally's prediction: Nebraska 35 Iowa State 17
Actual score: Nebraska 42 Iowa State 7

The Cornhuskers took out their frustrations on the Cyclones after falling out of the top
10 for the first time since 1992. The Huskers racked up 42 points on a snowy day in Ames
as Dan Alexander ran for 118 yards and 3 touchdowns in his first Husker start. It was
another good defensive showing for the Blackshirts in holding Iowa State to one late score.

Wally's view from the cheap seats:
The offense had their way with the Cyclones, but hey, this is Iowa State we're talking about
here. Nebraska is going to need all the offense they can muster next week in Manhattan.

10/31/98 Texas Longhorns

Hook em
Wally's prediction: Nebraska 31 Texas 10
Actual score: Nebraska 16 Texas 20

The Huskers lost in Memorial Stadium for the first time in 7 years when Washington
last beat them there 9/21/91. The unranked Longhorns outplayed Nebraska from the opening
kickoff and quickly took a 10-0 lead. The Husker offense managed just 194 yards rushing
on 47 carries, fumbled the ball 3 times and allowed the QB to be sacked 4 times. Texas'
Ricky Williams all but locked up the Heisman Trophy race with 150 yards rushing on 37 carries.

Wally's view from the cheap seats:
Boy, this prediction stuff is harder than it looks. Week after week the Huskers rely
on defense to keep them in games but it wasn't enough Saturday. It's gonna get real
ugly in Manhattan if Nebraska doesn't find a way to put more points on the board. If
they cannot muster some offense, we'll be seeing y'all at the Builders Square Alamo Bowl.

10/24/98 Missouri Tigers

Mizzoo
Wally's prediction: Nebraska 31 Missouri 17
Actual score: Nebraska 20 Missouri 13

NU extended their home winning streak to 47 in a game that came down to the final
seconds. The blackshirts held off a late rally by Missouri to secure the win. Monte
Christo came off the bench to spark the Husker's sputtering offense by scoring two second
half touchdowns. His two untimely fumbles, however, kept the Tigers in the game until the end.

Wally's view from the cheap seats:
Defense wins games, but the Huskers better find their offense before they travel
to Manhattan. Are those buzzards I see circling over Wildcat Stadium?

10/17/98 Kansas Jayhawks

Kansas
Wally's prediction: Nebraska 49 Kansas 10
Actual score: Nebraska 41 Kansas 0

The Huskers haven't had back to back losses in a regular season since 1968. Nebraska
got back on track with 545 yards of total offense, 466 of them on the ground, while
the Blackshirts posted their first shutout of the season. Correll Buckholter ran for
133 yards and three touchdowns in leading the Cornusker attack.

Wally's view from the cheap seats:
Now that's more like it! The highlight of the game was watching reserve
QB Jay Runty, whom my wife babysat for in the late '70s. Boy, talk about feeling old!

10/10/98 Texas A&M Aggies

A&M
Wally's prediction: Nebraska 35 Texas A&M 17
Actual score: Nebraska 21 Texas A&M 28

The Husker offense finally got on track in the 4th quarter, but it was too little,
too late. The Aggies rolled to a commanding 28 to 7 lead as their defense held off
a late Cornhusker rally with an interception. Two key Cornusker turnovers dealt
the Cornhuskers their first loss in the past 20 games.

Wally's view from the cheap seats:
The Huskers got a good old fashioned Texas butt whipping!
The Aggies won by 7 but the game was never that close.

10/3/98 Oklahoma State Cowboys

OSU
Wally's prediction: Nebraska 56 OSU 14
Actual score: Nebraska 24 OSU 17

There was a sea of red at Arrowhead, and they weren't cheering for the Chiefs. But, ah,
ahemm, uhh...has anyone seen the real Cornhuskers? There is a reward out for their
return, unharmed. The team in scarlet and cream managed 215 yards of total offense.
OSU outgained the Huskers in rushing, passing, first downs and time of possession. The
Big 12 season is underway and it's going to be the most competitive conference race in years.

Wally's view from the cheap seats:
73 yards rushing?!I gained more ground than that just pacing back and forth on my living room floor!

9/26/98 Washington Huskies

Huskies
Wally's prediction: Nebraska 45 Washington 17
Actual score: Nebraska 55 Washington 7

I expected some offensive power as Bobby Newcombe and DeAngelo Evans returned to
the lineup and they delivered. They each scored 3 touchdowns in sending a message
to the naysayers. Evans ran 13 times for 146 yards and the Blackshirts forced six
turnovers as the Huskers extended their winning streak to 18 games. Newcombe ran for
79 yards and passed for 84 on 8 attempts. But, can the Cornhuskers stay healthy?

Wally's view from the cheap seats:
I only have 2 words to describe the Cornhusker's performance: AWE SOME

9/12/98 California Bears

Cal
Wally's prediction: Nebraska 35 California 7
Actual score: Nebraska 24 California 3

Third string quarterback Monte Christo led the Husker's to their first road win behind 9
of 12 passing for 106 yards. QB Eric Crouch ran for 2 TD's before being sidelined with
an injury as Joel Mackovicka plowed his way for 83 yards on 14 carries. The Husker
defense was impressive in holding the Bears to 12 yards rushing and no touchdowns.
The Blackshirts accounted for six sacks and two interceptions.

Wally's view from the cheap seats:
A good Defense is better than a bad one. Let's hope Monte can stay healthy--Frankie, start warming up!

9/5/98 U of Alabama-Birmingham Blazers

UAB
Wally's prediction: Nebraska 63 U of Alabama-Birmingham 10
Actual score: Nebraska 38 U of Alabama-Birmingham 7

There were 5 injured starters sitting this one out and it showed. NU had 41 total yards
in a scoreless 3rd quarter but got on track offensively in the 4th with 17 points. The
Huskers used a balanced attack to finish with 236 yards rushing and 208 yards in the air.
Eric Crouch, filling in for an injured Bobby Newcombe, was 11 of 17 passing and rushed
for 69 yards. Correll Buckhalter led the ground attack with 96 yards on 19 carries.

Wally's view from the cheap seats:
The Blazers came ready to play while the NU players kept the trainers busy. Is there a doctor in the house?

8/29/98 Louisiana Tech Bulldogs

La Tech
Wally's Prediction: Nebraska 49 Louisiana Tech 21
Actual score: Nebraska 56 Louisiana Tech 27

While the game was never in doubt, Louisiana Tech QB Tim Rattay lit up the NU secondary
with 590 yards on 46 of 68 passing. Troy Edwards set an NCAA receiving record with 405
yards on 21 catches as the Bulldogs took advantage of a Nebraska defense that was without
starting free safety Clint Finley. Bobby Newcombe was 9 of 10 passing and ran for 2 TDs
in his QB debut. Correll Buckhalter led all rushers with 143 yards in 19 carries.

Wally's view from the cheap seats:
The most entertaining blowout of the season! Why can't the opposition just run it up the middle?
