They first filled one big void by the signing of Curtis Joseph to a 3 year deal for $24 million with incentives. If Detroit wins the Stanley Cup, Joseph gets an added $1 million dollar bonus. The contract also includes a team option for a 4th year. They then had to look to fill the void of the departure of Bowman. Speculation for the longest time was that they planned to stay within the organization by promoting either Barry Smith or Dave Lewis. All that speculation came to rest on Wednesday (7/17) when the team announced the promotion of Dave Lewis to head coach. Barry Smith is returning as an assistant coach, while they promoted another person in the organization to be the second assistant. Former Wings enforcer Joey Kocur will be the other assistant.

Also leaving the organization after 11 years, is team trainer John Wharton. He has been replaced by three year assistant trainer Piet Van Zant. Free Agent Signings
