Holy Smoke
Sex Objects:  Kate Winslet, Harvey Ketel

Type of Sex:  The kind with Havey Keitel in it

Sex Play:  It's possible this film's title was what someone said when they heard Jane Campion had once again cast Harvey Keitel as a sexual leading man.  There's apparently no telling Jane Campion that, on the evidence of The Piano and The Portrait of a Lady, her taste in men is simply terrifying.  Here Keitel will not be winning a plain-Jane mute in New Zealand as he did in The Piano, he'll be stoking the passion of a nubile young woman, Ruth, played by Kate Winslet, who's parents have hired him to deprogram her from a cult.  How deprogramming turns into a tale of sexual obsession can probably be explained only by the fact that the story takes place in India.  How Jane Campion concluded that anyone wants to see sex between Winslet and Keitel cannot be explained, period!

Harvey in THE PIANO

Kate on the love scene with Harvey: 'Harvey and I become involved in a bizarre love affair and the characters make love,' she said. 'We had a real laugh doing it. The director Jane Campion and I rehearsed it first, Jane playing Harvey's role. 'Then Harvey and I rehearsed it, both of us wearing tracksuits, and then we got down to it in three takes. It was over in an hour. 'Jim and I had been apart for four months. It happened that he arrived in Australia the week of the love scene. 'But it was just a normal day's work and we had a laugh about it.'
