Marin-Baeza continued

Baeza had an interesting 1962. His purse earnings were totaled at $2,048,428, and he was second only to Bill Shoemaker in that division. In fact, they were only two riders to break the $2millon mark. Manuel Ycaza was third on the list, with just over $1.9 million. Baeza scored 250 victories, 242 seconds and 206 thirds, from 1.443 mounts. This placed him fifth on the national standings for victories won, three behind Shoemaker, who was second on the list behind the first place finisher Ronald Ferraro. Though he enjoyed a banner year, winning numerous stakes events, he also lost some important ones as well. His loss in the Santa Anita Derby was by a half a length, the Hollywood Derby by a neck, and the Belmont Stakes by a nose.

After almost five successful years together, Marin and Baeza parted ways in June of 1964, but not before winning the 1963 Kentucky Derby and their second Belmont in three years. Baeza's win in the Kentucky Derby marked the first time that the historic event was won by a foreign jockey. There were also third place finishes in the Travers and the Preakness. The split between the two was over a misunderstanding with Fred Hooper, who held Baeza's contract, and who wanted Baeza to ride in Kentucky, but the rider insisted on going to New York. The subsequent result was for Baeza to give Mr. Hooper $100,000 and for Hooper to give Baeza his contract.
