On August 12th, 1585, one of Raleigh’s settlers of the lost Roanoke Colony wrote the first of several letters home to England. They were the first letters written in America in English. Their existence was not known until 1860. If the outcome would have been different, and England would not have won against the Spanish Armada, people in North America today might all be speaking Spanish instead of English.
