This song by Dave Jensen from the band Yard Onions is about a brave lady named Julia Hill who is fighting a greedy timber company in a peaceful protest. Julia climbed a 1000 year old tree and has been living on a 6x8 piece of plywood 180 feet up for almost TWO YEARS to stop it's destruction. The tree is named "Luna" and Julia is called "Butterfly". Julia has sworn not to let her feet touch the ground until "Luna" is spared from the chainsaw. Touch the BUTTERFLY under the lyrics to go to Julia "Butterfly" Hill's Links Page.
They wonder what would drive someone to live up there.
It's love that drives the heart while all around is hate.
The sound of truth rings out in the sacrifice she made.
(CHORUS)
She can hear Luna talking
She sees the art within her bark
She saw Luna's tears
When her neighbors all did fall
She didn't seek the spotlight
or try to make a name
She just did what's right
so we all can do the same.
To take a stand by sitting to expose their evil lies
Until the noose on their neck is tighter than their ties.
We know who's the criminal and we know who is the saint.
A lovely butterfly has given us our wings.
(CHORUS)
It's time to stop the madness, time to stop the hate.
And why do we defend the pointless lives we've made.
While you're stuck in traffic, ignoring what was lost
A girl who climbed a tree at peace in the forest
(CHORUS)
