Television's Negative Impact on Children

Violence and Aggression

The advent of the television was almost inevitable, resulting from the technological advances in the radio and telegraph field. Unfortunately, the television, as many other innovations and inventions have experienced, has many unintended consequences. Some of these unintended consequences have positively affected society, while others have adversely affected society. Some of the more unfortunate negative side effects of the television have been on children. Among the many negative results of the television on children include an increased tendency to be violent, antisocial and aggressive, a decrease in reading fluency, a developmental brain change, an increase in stereotyping, and an increased inhibition of creativity and imagination. These adverse consequences only increase with increased television viewing.
