Meteghan is derived from the Indian word "Mitihikan". There are several variations as to the meaning of the word or name...however the most popular appears to be that it means "blue rocks". I'm not sure which rocks they are referring to and it is very possible that the word means something totally different.

The village of Meteghan was first settled by Prudent Robichaud and his family about 1785. Prudent along with members of his family were veterans of that faithful winter of 1755-56 at Major's Point known locally as "la Pointe-à-Major or by the old name of Ile-à-Piau where approximately 120 Acadians spend the winter in an attempt to escape being captured and deported.
