The Grist Mill Story by Arthur Hamilton

from "History of Hamilton and Related Lines" by Zelma McDaniel

In the years around 1860 and 1890, William Riley operated a cotton gin and grist mill, they were located in the same building. This building was located on a little branch below Mt. Pisgah Baptist Cemetery, now belonging to Bobby Tyson, one of the descendants of William. On certain days different ones of his six boys would help with the ginning and corn grinding, which were operated by steam. The building was a large shed with stalls running all the way through the building on each side. The largest room was used for grinding the corn. When they brought their cotton to gin they would put it in one of the stalls, if they ask when to

come back after the bale of cotton, he would tell them that

he would let them know, sometimes it would be three or four

days. But they always ground meal on Saturday, on this

particular Saturday something went wrong with the engine

and William his grandson went to see about the machinery.

In a few minutes the rest of the workers and bystanders,

heard a loud explosion, the millrock had burst and the

pieces of rock flew wild. One rock hit William, another hit

his grandfather, William Riley, and one piece of the rock

would have hit Anthony, if he had not moved out of the

window where he was sitting, just before the explosion took

place. They all thought that the two Williams were dead.

They put them in a horse cart and rushed them to the house.

During this time Charles and Ruthie Hamilton and son

arrived at the home of William Riley. Rushing to the house

they took them out of the cart and stretched them out on the

right side of the porch. Placing pillows under their heads.

Charles said "Riley ain't dead he just moved his hand".

Polly ran into the house and got the camphor and they began

to rub Riley and he revived, but was stunned for a while.

Asa Adams was staying at Riley's at this time, was sitting

on the porch, although he was blind he could speak, but didn't have much to say.

The 1880 census lists Moore Williams and Henry Williams as living with him as servants (both listed as black).6

The first house of Mary Hamilton and William Riley was a small log cabin between Bear Creek and Ailey. When their son, William ( Captain) , was a young boy, they built another larger house where Kibee is now located. This house was still standing and was occupied by Reggie Griffin, RR #1, Box 360-A, Vidalia, Ga. 30474 in 1995.8

He first married Mary Polly Hamilton - 56, daughter of Josiah Hamilton - 57 & Mary Poole - 58, 7 Jan 1849. Born 26 Feb 1830. Died 24 Apr 1900 in Montgomery Co. , Ga. Buried in Hamilton Family Burial grounds, Kibee, Ga.

DEATH OF A- L. ADAMS.

Hon. A. L. Adams, one of the best known citizens of Montgomery County, died at his home about six miles south of Mt. Vernon on Saturday last about 12 o'clock. He was confined only a few days, but for some time had not rested well on account of heart trouble, with attending complications.

Mr. Adams was liberal and hospitable, a good neighbor, and a generous provider for the home. He leaves a devoted wife and two daughters, Mesdames J. B. Wooten, of Cordele, and C. H. Wooten, of Lumber City, besides a host of kinsmen and warm friends throughout this section who will regret to learn of his death.

Mr. Adams was a valuable citizen, possessing a spirit of enterprise and progress, having represented Montgomery County in the general assembly during the term of 1892-03. Born April 1, 1833, he has been a life-long citizen of this country, respected by all. He was a Mason of high standing, a member of Aural Lodge -k 239, and a body from that fraternity assembled at high twelve on Monday last to pay the last tribute of respect to the departed brother, Past Master A. B. Hutcheson conducting the Masonic service. The remains were laid to rest in the McAllister Cemetery, Revs. J. W. Simmons and J. B. Blackwell having conducted the funeral service at the home. A good man has gone.4

IN MEMORIAM.

The Grim Reaper, Death, has again visited our ranks, severed the mystic tie, and felled from us Bro. A. L. Adams, one of the oldest and most highly honored members of Aural Lodge * 239, F. & A. M.

Brother A. L. Adams was born in Montgomery County, Georgia, April lst, 1833, and lived during his entire life in this county. After a short illness he died March 5th, 1904, being at the date of his death, 70 years, 11 months and 4 days old. At the date of his birth Montgomery County was sparsely settled, and in its primitive state. during his life he witnessed the transaction of the county from a sparsely settled community to that of a populous and rapidly growing county, and took great interest in all matters of progress and improvement, both in a private and public way. He was frequently honored by his fellow citizens of the county, having held, to the satisfaction of his constituents, at different times, the offices of clerk of the superior court, sheriff, and representative of the county.

When war was declared between the States, his sense of honor and patriotism prompted him to enlist in the Confederate cause, and among the ranks of the Confederate army he served full four years, a patriotic citizen and a gallant soldier. After the cessation of hostilities he returned to Montgomery County, where he has since engaged in farming. His home on his farm exemplifies his progressive ideas; and his hospitality knew no bounds.

As a Mason we knew most of him. Early in life he became a member of Aural Lodge of F. & A. M., and kept his membership in this institution until the date of his death. At the time that he was made a Master Mason, Aural Lodge occupied a small, rudely constructed building which, in that day and time, was regarded as ample accommodations for the few men who formed its membership. He lived to see his Lodge grow in financial strength until the old building was abandoned and a commodious brick building built in its stead, with an elegant hall and equipage located therein for Masonic purposes. As a member of the Lodge, he was liberal in donating of his wealth for the purpose of making these improvements. He loved the principles of the order and whenever convenient always attended its meetings. Truly one of our best members has fallen; therefore, be it

Resolved, 1st, That in the death of Brother A. L. Adams we have lost an honored member whose place will be hard to fill.

2nd, That we deplore his death, and extend to his family our heart-felt condolences in this their great bereavement.

3rd, That a page of our minutes be dedicated to his memory, and that these resolutions be inscribed thereon.

4th, That The Montgomery Monitor be requested to publish these resolutions.

All of which is respectfully submitted:

J. B. Geiger, G. L. Adams, J. C. Calhoun, Committee.*4

The Story of the Log Cabin and the Brave Boy

By Elizabeth Sharpe

In the nineteenth century and earlier it was not usual for the young people to get married early and leave their homes to start a new life of their own. William Riley Adams, at the age of nineteen years, met, courted, and married Mary (Polly) Hamilton, a lovely young maiden of eighteen years. They built a small house or log cabin near Asa Adams' old homestead and began another chapter in their lives.

As time passed, a new family member arrived every year or two and soon the small house was not large enough for this growing family. Therefore William decided to build on a large tract of land about three miles in the northeastern section of this property because of the timber and good land for grazing.

Taking his son, William (called Captain), who was just a young boy, William Riley began the great task of cutting the trees away in the area designated for their new home. While his father chopped down the trees, the lad would peel and trim each log with a drawing knife. Not being experienced as yet in this work, the boy struck a knot in the log, which caused the knife to slip and cut a gash about six inches long in his stomach. The father, seeing how serious this could be, placed the boy by a tree and told him not to move or put his hands on the cut.

Taking a mule he had been using to move the logs, William Riley rode to a nearby Negro house. In a short while he was back with a needle and thread and proceeded to sew up the wound, applying turpentine with great care. He then took the boy home and put him in bed where he stayed for about a week. No infection or any trouble followed and soon the lad was as good as new.

Captain lived a long and full life, dying at the ripe age of ninety-four. Perhaps we might add that antibiotics may not always be the answer. The story of the father's courage and the lad's recovery has been told over and over through the years by members of Captain's family.8

In May of 1881 Jerry Hamilton, a black employed by Asa Adams, was brutally murdered by a band of white attackers. In Jan. of 1882 William Adams along with Tom and Angus Morris were charged with the murder.12 I recall reading elsewhere that they were are acquitted upon a technicality, which was common in those days for such situations.

He first married Malissa Delma Peterson - 42, daughter of Mary ? - 759, 22 Dec 1872. Born 17 Sep 1846. Died 10 Nov 1897.

MRS. MELISSA ADAMS DEAD.

Wife of W. W. Adams, was born the 17th of September, A. D., 1846, and died the 10th of November, '97.

Sister Adams had been in declining health for about 16 years. She was not only patient in her affliction but as placid as a child. She was not only pious but tender toward all, in her heart was the law of kindness.

When the end was approaching she called her family around her and talked with them for more than an hour of her sweet hope and how she had often prayed that they might follow her to the better world. She talked as long as she was able, and went down into the river of death, pointing her children to the fields of living green beyond the swirling flood. May her memory become deeper and stronger in the lives of her children until they are all prepared to follow her through death to glory is the prayer of a friend and pastor.

The Headless Cow as told by Ethel Adams Witt

Pg 49 History of Hamiltons by Zelma P. Blocker McDaniel

Mollie Hutcherson married Charlie Adams at the early age of fourteen. They settled on a farm, given to Charlie by his father, William Riley Adams, and built a house. The front of the house was used for sleeping, the dining and cooking was done in another room built on to the back, with a dog trot between to reach the kitchen she had to go out on a long porch.

When this incident happened, she had two children; Leon and Elizia. Elizia was the baby. As the custom was to milk the cow late in the evening, she went out to the old log barn on the right side of the house. After the milking was over she turned and walked out of the barn. Then looking down the path toward the sweet gum head she saw a strange red cow coming up the path. (At this time she was not frightened.) Thinking that some neighbor had a new cow, at first the cow looked as if it was a butt headed cow. But after a good look at the cow she discovered that the cow didn't have a head at all. In the meantime the cow was coming up the hill closer and closer. At this time she became frightened and hurried to the house, taking some long splinters and sticking them in the stove to give light. She picked up the baby and sat down on the bench in front of the cook stove, the baby went to sleep. In the meantime, the moon had started to give some light, although the daylight had not completely faded away. The back gate was a few feet from the back door and was wide open, glancing out the back door she saw the same red cow. Standing sideways in the gate, having no head and not even switching it's tail. At this time she really became frightened, sitting there for a few minutes she decided to go to the sleeping quarters. With the sleeping baby in her arms and Leon holding to the hem of her skirt, she grabbed a splinter out of the stove for a light. She then hurried on to the dog trot and to the bedroom. About the time she got the baby in bed, she heard Charlie whistling, hurrying to meet him she told him about the headless cow. He told her to go back in the house and he would go and drive up the cow. Looking in every fence comer and all in the woods, he could not find the cow. They looked for tracks and did not find any. Mollie Adams lived to be 81 years old and never verified her story.8

It has been said by many of the Adams, including her son Raymond Adams, that Elizabeth was a Cherokee Indian, but I have never found anything that documents this.

Elizabeth Turner Adams was a type of person

who spoke her mind to anyone at any time she

pleased. After Alonzo's death she became very

independent because of the hard times she faced

alone. Shortly after Alonzo passed away, his

father, William W. (Capt.) Adams and one of

Alonzo's brothers came to visit. They had just

learned of Alonzo's death and came to offer help

to Elizabeth and her children. It is told that

when they rode up in front of the house in the

buggy, Elizabeth walked out onto the porch and

told them " There is no need to get out of your

buggy. You never cared for or came to visit while

Alonzo was living and I don't need your help

or company now." They just popped the reins

the horse and drove away.9

She married Alonzo Franklin Adams - 12, son of William Wiley Adams (Called Captain) - 41 & Malissa Delma Peterson - 42, 23 Oct 1904 in Alston, Montgomery Co, Ga. Born Apr 1880 in Tarrytown, Ga. Montgomery Co. Died 24 Dec 1932. Buried in Old Bethyl Church Cemetery, Odum, Ga. Occupation Share cropper.

Alonzo had a falling out with his Father over his marriage to Elizabeth Turner. He was forbade to marry her since she had a child ( Lester Pat Adams) out of wedlock by another man. This man is unknown to me. Alonzo was living with Elizabeth turner's parents at the time and he was working for them. Alonzo asked her parents for her hand in marriage and they agreed. They immediately rode into Alston, Ga. in Montgomery Co. and Vinney told Elizabeth to go into the Justice of the Peace's office and marry him. She obeyed her mother, even though she was in love with this other man. When "Captain" found out about this, he disowned Alonzo. Alonzo bought his marriage bond Oct.22,1904 (book 1 page 286).9

The 1880 Census doesn't show Alonzo being alive yet.6

Alonzo's grave is not marked.
