1. Unknown - 243.

Believed to have died around 1810. A John Adams seems the best candidate for Penelope's first husband, whose last known recorded record in Montgomery Co. is a tax record of 18065 .

Lulane Mcbride says Penelope's husband is John Adams.8 Zelma MacDaniel says it is a Mathias Adams.9 Both are believed to be Revolutionary War veterans. They may be brothers. I have also recieved information that her husband's name is John Mathias Adams. An Asa Adams land plat included in Montgomery Co. Ga. Court homestead pleadings by his wife has what appears to be the name "John A. Adams" written in the center of it. There is also a Robert Adams, whose heirs received his Land grant in Washington County, could also have a connection there.

He married Penelope Adams? - 87. Born 1770 in Virginia. Died After 1850.

Born in Virginia around 17702 Died between 1850-60 (appears in 1850 census living with her son Matthias Adams ,but does not appear in the 1860 census.) Her first husband is unknown at this time, but believed to be a John or Matthias Adams. A Penelope Adams is listed in the 1790 census of Onslow Co., N.C. with 2 white free females and a Peny Adams is listed in the state Census of N.C. in Pasquotank Co again with 2 white females in 1784-1787. Can not be sure if this is her. She came to Montgomery County Ga. around 1798. "Montgomery Co. Deed Book H, 1809- 1817" says on page 227 Penelapha Adams ( names were often spelled out phonically in those days) ...Children Wiley, Shartol, Asa, Wit:Lameaul Wiliamson, Abel Akredge, Nov. 17, 1812. 12

Lemuel Williamson ( she married him in Mont., Co. Oct 23, 1811) is show in the tax records of 1811-1812 in district 545 , Last record this researcher could find was in a jury dated July 23, 1816, he must of died after 1817 as he does not show up in any other record after then.12

A inferior court record shows where he was indigent and sick and asks for relief to avoid further suffering on his part.15

They had the following children:

2 i. Asa Lemuel Adams - 74

Won Lots 187-8-3 and 6-15-3 in the 1832 Cherokee Land Lottery in Petersons District. Is shown as tax agent for Wiley Adams and Louisa Adams in 1846 and William Riley Adams in 18495

The 1880 census shows his grandchildren, John C. Palmer and Louisa Palmer as living with him. It appears to me that after Martha's death Asa must have taken on the children , maybe due to Joseph Palmer being ill or incapable? That census also shows William Cooper and Clarissa S. Connnel as living with him as servants.6

JOYOUS FAMILY REUNION.

The annual gathering of the descendants of Wiley Adams, to celebrate the 100th anniversary of the birth of Mrs. Adams, on Wednesday of last week, was a happy occasion enjoyed by a host of intelligent people.

Mrs. Adams died a few years ago, but her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren meet every year on her birthday, and this meeting was at Oakdale, the pleasant home of Mr. and Mrs. H. A. Simpson. The usage is an honorable one, kept up to commemorate the life of a precious mother, and keeps the family in close touch with each other.

Wiley Adams was one of four brothers, Wiley, Mathias, Byrd and Asa, who were pioneers in Montgomery County. Wiley Adams left one daughter, Mrs. McCloud, still living, and four sons, Joe, Mathias, G. Washington and Tom, who were at the festive board on this enjoyable occasion. In all there were ten children of Wiley Adams, five living as stated, forty-one grandchildren and eighty-four great-grandchildren.

Wiley had the most numerous family of the original set, and G. W. Adams of the present generation. The descendants of Wiley Adams form quite an important factor in the make-up of Montgomery County's best citizenship.

The next interesting celebration of the birthday of the loved and departed Grandma Adams will occur at the home of her oldest son, Mr. Joe Adams, now in his 78th year, and we hope that "Uncle Joe" will live long and join in many more of the happy occasions.4

He married Francis Collins (Called Fannie) - 89, daughter of Joseph Collins - 727 & Mollie ? - 728, 3 Oct 1822 in Montgomery Co., Ga. Born 3 Aug 1804. Died 18 Apr 1900 in Montgomery Co., Ga. (at her son Joesph's house). Buried 19 Apr 1900 in Adams Cemetery #3 Mt Vernon, Montgomery Co., Georgia.

A FAMILY REUNION.

Mrs. Francis Adams Celebrates Her Ninety Fifth Birthday.

At the home of Mr. and Mrs. T. B. Adams, near Mt. Vernon, last Thursday, Mrs. Francis Adams celebrated her 95th birthday. 67 children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren were present besides a large number of friends,

Mrs. Adams was born August 3rd, 1804, and her parents were Joseph and Mollie Collins. She was married October 3, 1822, to Wiley Adams, who died May 21, 1873, after a happy union of more than fifty years. She has five living children, thirty-six living grandchildren and sixty living great-grandchildren.

This was indeed a happy occasion and one rarely witnessed, where four generations were gathered around the festal board eating and drinking in honor of this good woman's ninety-fifth birthday. Few are spared to live to the age that Mrs. Adams has reached and fewer still live to enjoy a family reunion where so many are present. She is one who saw the glories of the nineteenth century before the sun had faded the stars from its early morning sky, watched the gathering clouds of national strife thicken and burst forth into the awful storm of civil war and pass over leaving her land bleeding and hopeless, witnesses the rebuilding from these ruins, and now surrounded by three generations of children she quietly beholds the last rays of the century's sun as it sinks behind the hills of time. May these happy reunions continue until she has seen the sun of a new century well up in the heavens.

Among those present at the reunion were, W. E. Adams and family, of Higgston; Jack Brigman and family, of Helena; Mrs. James Collins and children, of Savannah; Washington Adams and fan-Lily of near Mt. Vernon; Joseph Adams and family, James Adams and family, Mrs. G. L. Adams and children, J. L. Adams and family, John C. Adams and fan-Lily, of Ailey; H. A. Simpson and family, Mrs. T. J. Thompson and children, H. H. McAllister and family, E. D. Adams and family, Dr. T. W. Rogers and family, T. B. Adams and family, and Mrs. Sim Smith, besides Mrs. Susan Burch of Rhine and a number of other visitors. A number of the old servants who had belonged to Mrs. Adams before the war were also present at this birthday dinner of their old mistress.4

She died on April 18, 1900 after a short illness with la grippe (influenza). She was a member of the Methodist church.4

They had the following children:

Listed as attending Montgomery Co. School in the year 1860 and 18635 Everette Blackshear's death had remained a mystery to me , till I found his gravesite. On the right side of this miniature obelisk was a confederate soldier's image and engraved in the stone was verse mentioning fallen soldiers.

MONTGOMERY'S OLDEST INHABITANT DIED ON THURSDAY LAST.

A most remarkable life has just come to a close in Montgomery county. On Thursday, June lst, at the home of her youngest son, Mr. Charles D. Adams, on the west side of the Oconee, Mrs. Eliza Adams came to the end of a life remarkable for its great length. Born of January 1, 1804, she tarried on earth one hundred and one years and five months. She saw generations arise and hundreds of the number pass before her into the great beyond. She lived through the changes of more than a century, and until no mind save her own should look back to the scenes of a period, whose actors have passed out of memory's halls.

Her maiden name was Collins, and she was married to Mathias Adams, of Tattinall County, in the year 1820, and her husband was killed by a limb from a failing tree over 52 years ago. At the time of celebrating her 100th anniversary, January 1st, 1904, her descendants numbered 291, of which 254 were living. Mrs. Sallie Hamilton, now in feeble health, and 81 years old, is her oldest child, and her oldest great-great-grandchild, the daughter of Dr. Currie, of Ailey, now over 13 years of age. Her other children are, Mathew B., now 77 years old, John W., Thomas E., Jasper Adams (died last year), Robert R., Mrs. Julia Clark and Charles D. Adams, now over 58 years old. About 50 of her great-great-grandchildren, the fifth generation, are now breathing the air of this favored section. She lived long years after the great war in which seven of her sturdy sons fought for Southern rights and principles, and the companions of her girlhood days had been sleeping in their graves for half a century, when on Thursday last she departed from us.

On Friday last her mortal remains were laid to rest in the Adams family cemetery, and of her long and useful life there remains now only a precious memory.

How many of her descendants, scattered all over this country, will ever reach the extreme old age of "Little Grandma" Adams?4

The Grist Mill Story by Arthur Hamilton

from "History of Hamilton and Related Lines" by Zelma McDaniel

In the years around 1860 and 1890, William Riley operated a cotton gin and grist mill, they were located in the same building. This building was located on a little branch below Mt. Pisgah Baptist Cemetery, now belonging to Bobby Tyson, one of the descendants of William. On certain days different ones of his six boys would help with the ginning and corn grinding, which were operated by steam. The building was a large shed with stalls running all the way through the building on each side. The largest room was used for grinding the corn. When they brought their cotton to gin they would put it in one of the stalls, if they ask when to

come back after the bale of cotton, he would tell them that

he would let them know, sometimes it would be three or four

days. But they always ground meal on Saturday, on this

particular Saturday something went wrong with the engine

and William his grandson went to see about the machinery.

In a few minutes the rest of the workers and bystanders,

heard a loud explosion, the millrock had burst and the

pieces of rock flew wild. One rock hit William, another hit

his grandfather, William Riley, and one piece of the rock

would have hit Anthony, if he had not moved out of the

window where he was sitting, just before the explosion took

place. They all thought that the two Williams were dead.

They put them in a horse cart and rushed them to the house.

During this time Charles and Ruthie Hamilton and son

arrived at the home of William Riley. Rushing to the house

they took them out of the cart and stretched them out on the

right side of the porch. Placing pillows under their heads.

Charles said "Riley ain't dead he just moved his hand".

Polly ran into the house and got the camphor and they began

to rub Riley and he revived, but was stunned for a while.

Asa Adams was staying at Riley's at this time, was sitting

on the porch, although he was blind he could speak, but didn't have much to say.

The 1880 census lists Moore Williams and Henry Williams as living with him as servants (both listed as black).6

The first house of Mary Hamilton and William Riley was a small log cabin between Bear Creek and Ailey. When their son, William ( Captain) , was a young boy, they built another larger house where Kibee is now located. This house was still standing and was occupied by Reggie Griffin, RR #1, Box 360-A, Vidalia, Ga. 30474 in 1995.8

He first married Mary Polly Hamilton - 56, daughter of Josiah Hamilton - 57 & Mary Poole - 58, 7 Jan 1849. Born 26 Feb 1830. Died 24 Apr 1900 in Montgomery Co. , Ga. Buried in Hamilton Family Burial grounds, Kibee, Ga.

LOVED ONES MOURN.

Tuesday morning, April 24th, Mrs. W. R. Adams died at her home near Kibbee, and her death takes from her community a good woman, one loved and esteemed by a large circle of friends, and from the saddened home its dearest loved one and truest friend. Mrs. Adams was a sister of Hon. C. S. Hamilton and by her marriage she was connected to another of the most prominent families in our county. Her body was interred in the Hamilton family burial grounds near her home yesterday.

Only one week before her death her son, Mr. Charles Adams was taken from this life and his loved ones and on Saturday before, her daughter, Mrs. C. S. Calhoun, died at her home in Vidalia, thus three of the family have been taken from their loved ones within a few days of each other.

On Sunday morning the remains were taken to the Hamilton burying grounds, near Kibbee, and laid away to await the coming of the resurrection morm.4

DEATH OF A- L. ADAMS.

Hon. A. L. Adams, one of the best known citizens of Montgomery County, died at his home about six miles south of Mt. Vernon on Saturday last about 12 o'clock. He was confined only a few days, but for some time had not rested well on account of heart trouble, with attending complications.

Mr. Adams was liberal and hospitable, a good neighbor, and a generous provider for the home. He leaves a devoted wife and two daughters, Mesdames J. B. Wooten, of Cordele, and C. H. Wooten, of Lumber City, besides a host of kinsmen and warm friends throughout this section who will regret to learn of his death.

Mr. Adams was a valuable citizen, possessing a spirit of enterprise and progress, having represented Montgomery County in the general assembly during the term of 1892-03. Born April 1, 1833, he has been a life-long citizen of this country, respected by all. He was a Mason of high standing, a member of Aural Lodge -k 239, and a body from that fraternity assembled at high twelve on Monday last to pay the last tribute of respect to the departed brother, Past Master A. B. Hutcheson conducting the Masonic service. The remains were laid to rest in the McAllister Cemetery, Revs. J. W. Simmons and J. B. Blackwell having conducted the funeral service at the home. A good man has gone.4

IN MEMORIAM.

The Grim Reaper, Death, has again visited our ranks, severed the mystic tie, and felled from us Bro. A. L. Adams, one of the oldest and most highly honored members of Aural Lodge * 239, F. & A. M.

Brother A. L. Adams was born in Montgomery County, Georgia, April lst, 1833, and lived during his entire life in this county. After a short illness he died March 5th, 1904, being at the date of his death, 70 years, 11 months and 4 days old. At the date of his birth Montgomery County was sparsely settled, and in its primitive state. during his life he witnessed the transaction of the county from a sparsely settled community to that of a populous and rapidly growing county, and took great interest in all matters of progress and improvement, both in a private and public way. He was frequently honored by his fellow citizens of the county, having held, to the satisfaction of his constituents, at different times, the offices of clerk of the superior court, sheriff, and representative of the county.

When war was declared between the States, his sense of honor and patriotism prompted him to enlist in the Confederate cause, and among the ranks of the Confederate army he served full four years, a patriotic citizen and a gallant soldier. After the cessation of hostilities he returned to Montgomery County, where he has since engaged in farming. His home on his farm exemplifies his progressive ideas; and his hospitality knew no bounds.

As a Mason we knew most of him. Early in life he became a member of Aural Lodge of F. & A. M., and kept his membership in this institution until the date of his death. At the time that he was made a Master Mason, Aural Lodge occupied a small, rudely constructed building which, in that day and time, was regarded as ample accommodations for the few men who formed its membership. He lived to see his Lodge grow in financial strength until the old building was abandoned and a commodious brick building built in its stead, with an elegant hall and equipage located therein for Masonic purposes. As a member of the Lodge, he was liberal in donating of his wealth for the purpose of making these improvements. He loved the principles of the order and whenever convenient always attended its meetings. Truly one of our best members has fallen; therefore, be it

Resolued, 1st, That in the death of Brother A. L. Adams we have lost an honored member whose place will be hard to fill.

2nd, That we deplore his death, and extend to his family our heart-felt condolences in this their great bereavement.

3rd, That a page of our minutes be dedicated to his memory, and that these resolutions be inscribed thereon.

4th, That The Montgomery Monitor be requested to publish these resolutions.

All of which is respectfully submitted:

J. B. Geiger, G. L. Adams, J. C. Calhoun, Committee.*4

THE YEAR'S REUNION OF THE ADAMS FAMILY.

The gathering of the Adams family at the old Wiley Adams homestead, where Mr. and Mrs. Joseph Adams now reside with their son, Mr. James W. Adams, on Thursday last, was a most enjoyable occasion. To those who love to call up the past and in the living present sit beneath the shade of ancestral trees, listening to the stories of long, long ago, these family reunions are a source of delightful enjoyment.

Over eighty years ago, Wiley Adams, progenitor of this branch of the numerous and honorable Adams family, was living on this spot; and her Joseph, now eighty years old, Mathias, Washington, Thomas, Margaret Adams, (Mrs. McLeod) were born. These are all living, and the three brothers first mentioned were there on Thursday last to join their children and grandchildren in celebrating the day which for several years has been kept sacred to the memory of "Grandma Adams," wife of Wiley Adams.

In front of the house there is a picturesque grove of old mulberry trees whose summer shadows have been cast on the ground for 75 years, having been planted by the old "lord of the manor' before some of the old people mentioned above were born. The old men, still lively and cheerful, joining in the merry laughter of the third generation, the elderly ladies busy dispensing hospitality as only Montgomery County ladies know how to do, the busy converse of the fifty relatives and friends present, made up a happy scene. Mrs. Mattie Kirk and Mrs. Maggie Jones, (daughters of Mr. Mathias Adams) of Dublin, with their daughters, Miss Cleo Williams and Miss Nellie Kirk, Miss Florrie and Lucile Jones, and Mrs. Powell and Mrs. Wright, (daughter of Mr. Wash Adams) with their children from Swainsboro, were present from without the county. In a beautiful cedar grove in the rear of the house a bountiful feast, embracing all that could tempt the appetite, was spread at noon. The recitations by little Miss Lucile Jones of Dublin were the work of an artist. The day passed all too soon for the invited guests. May every member of the happy throng reach that haven of eternal rest where all shall be one continuous and joyful reunion.4

married in 1840 and had 12 children.

Mariah McLendon, b. 15 Dec 1811 in the Oconee River district, Montgomery County, GA. d. 17 Nov 1894 on the Old Home Place near Laurens County, GA. never married but had six children, purportedly fathered by Thomas Andrew

Davis. Their oldest was a son, William Henry Harrison McLendon, b. 2 Oct 1841, died 10 June 1923. ( I received my information on Mariah and Thomas Andrew relationship through two different sources: 1) Irene Porter Williams,

a distant, and now deceased cousin who obtained the information personally from Rowan Shorter McLendon, born 6 April 1872 died 16 Nov 1961,son of Ephraim McLendon born 6 Jan 1815 and died 27 Feb 1897, and Mary Jane Williams. Ephraim was a brother of Mariah and Cemantha.

Cemantha and Mariah were sisters, children of Needham McLendon, b. abt. 1782 in Darlington County, S.C., died 1859 in Laurens County, GA., and Mary Elizabeth Sears, known as Polly Sears, b. 1793 in N.C. and died abt. 1838 in Laurens

County, GA. 2) source, Gussie Stapleton, another distant cousin who personally was told by a descendent of William Henry Harrison McLendon, illegitimate son of Mariah McLendon and Thomas Andrew Davis, that Thomas Andrew Davis was the father of all of Mariah's children. For many years, Ephraim was unmarried and lived in the household with Mariah McLendon and her children. I believe they

were in the same dwelling in the 1860 U.S. Census, Laurens County, GA. and with them was an illegitimate son of Ephriam's and Harriet Smith's, named William Wesley Smith, born 1843.

You will notice in researching that Thomas Andrew Davis was not buried in the Red Bluff Cemetery, Treutlen County, Georgia along with his wife, Cemantha and their children. Instead, Thomas Andrew was buried in a family plot called the Davis-Spivey Cemetery about five miles distance from the Red Bluff Church and Cemetery. For several years as I was researching this family, I could not understand why Thomas Andrew was the only one of his immediate family buried in the Davis-Spivey burial ground. After I uncovered his relationship with Mariah I now understand why he was buried alone. Thomas Andrew was a large man, very athletic, stood about 6 feet 4 inches tall and exceptionally strong. Tradition states that he was the undisputed champion of his area in regards to fisticuffs. He was often pitted against men, the strongest to be found, from other parts of the country sponsored by the Millers of Montgomery County. It is stated that Thomas Andrew never lost a fight. (It was the custom in those days for men to gather in the small towns on Saturday afternoons and hold these contests.) Also, Thomas Andrew was known as a "ladies man." 13

The Story of the Log Cabin and the Brave Boy

By Elizabeth Sharpe

In the nineteenth century and earlier it was not usual for the young people to get married early and leave their homes to start a new life of their own. William Riley Adams, at the age of nineteen years, met, courted, and married Mary (Polly) Hamilton, a lovely young maiden of eighteen years. They built a small house or log cabin near Asa Adams' old homestead and began another chapter in their lives.

As time passed, a new family member arrived every year or two and soon the small house was not large enough for this growing family. Therefore William decided to build on a large tract of land about three miles in the northeastern section of this property because of the timber and good land for grazing.

Taking his son, William (called Captain), who was just a young boy, William Riley began the great task of cutting the trees away in the area designated for their new home. While his father chopped down the trees, the lad would peel and trim each log with a drawing knife. Not being experienced as yet in this work, the boy struck a knot in the log, which caused the knife to slip and cut a gash about six inches long in his stomach. The father, seeing how serious this could be, placed the boy by a tree and told him not to move or put his hands on the cut.

Taking a mule he had been using to move the logs, William Riley rode to a nearby Negro house. In a short while he was back with a needle and thread and proceeded to sew up the wound, applying turpentine with great care. He then took the boy home and put him in bed where he stayed for about a week. No infection or any trouble followed and soon the lad was as good as new.

Captain lived a long and full life, dying at the ripe age of ninety-four. Perhaps we might add that antibiotics may not always be the answer. The story of the father's courage and the lad's recovery has been told over and over through the years by members of Captain's family.8

In May of 1881 Jerry Hamilton, a black employed by Asa Adams, was brutally murdered by a band of white attackers. In Jan. of 1882 William Adams along with Tom and Angus Morris were charged with the murder.12 I recall reading elsewhere that they were are acquitted upon a technicality, which was common in those days for such situations.

He first married Malissa Delma Peterson - 42, daughter of Mary ? - 759, 22 Dec 1872. Born 17 Sep 1846. Died 10 Nov 1897.

MRS. MELISSA ADAMS DEAD.

Wife of W. W. Adams, was born the 17th of September, A. D., 1846, and died the 10th of November, '97.

Sister Adams had been in declining health for about 16 years. She was not only patient in her affliction but as placid as a child. She was not only pious but tender toward all, in her heart was the law of kindness.

When the end was approaching she called her family around her and talked with them for more than an hour of her sweet hope and how she had often prayed that they might follow her to the better world. She talked as long as she was able, and went down into the river of death, pointing her children to the fields of living green beyond the swirling flood. May her memory become deeper and stronger in the lives of her children until they are all prepared to follow her through death to glory is the prayer of a friend and pastor.

The Headless Cow as told by Ethel Adams Witt

Pg 49 History of Hamiltons by Zelma P. Blocker McDaniel

Mollie Hutcherson married Charlie Adams at the early age of fourteen. They settled on a farm, given to Charlie by his father, William Riley Adams, and built a house. The front of the house was used for sleeping, the dining and cooking was done in another room built on to the back, with a dog trot between to reach the kitchen she had to go out on a long porch.

When this incident happened, she had two children; Leon and Elizia. Elizia was the baby. As the custom was to milk the cow late in the evening, she went out to the old log barn on the right side of the house. After the milking was over she turned and walked out of the barn. Then looking down the path toward the sweet gum head she saw a strange red cow coming up the path. (At this time she was not frightened.) Thinking that some neighbor had a new cow, at first the cow looked as if it was a butt headed cow. But after a good look at the cow she discovered that the cow didn't have a head at all. In the meantime the cow was coming up the hill closer and closer. At this time she became frightened and hurried to the house, taking some long splinters and sticking them in the stove to give light. She picked up the baby and sat down on the bench in front of the cook stove, the baby went to sleep. In the meantime, the moon had started to give some light, although the daylight had not completely faded away. The back gate was a few feet from the back door and was wide open, glancing out the back door she saw the same red cow. Standing sideways in the gate, having no head and not even switching it's tail. At this time she really became frightened, sitting there for a few minutes she decided to go to the sleeping quarters. With the sleeping baby in her arms and Leon holding to the hem of her skirt, she grabbed a splinter out of the stove for a light. She then hurried on to the dog trot and to the bedroom. About the time she got the baby in bed, she heard Charlie whistling, hurrying to meet him she told him about the headless cow. He told her to go back in the house and he would go and drive up the cow. Looking in every fence comer and all in the woods, he could not find the cow. They looked for tracks and did not find any. Mollie Adams lived to be 81 years old and never verified her story.8

**************************************************

63. Alonzo Franklin Adams - 12. Son of William Wiley Adams (Called Captain) - 41 & Malissa Delma Peterson - 42. Born Apr 1880 in Tarrytown, Ga. Montgomery Co. Died 24 Dec 1932. Buried in Old Bethyl Church Cemetery, Odum, Ga. Occupation Share cropper.

Alonzo had a falling out with his Father over his marriage to Elizabeth Turner. He was forbade to marry her since she had a child ( Lester Pat Adams) out of wedlock by another man. This man is unknown to me. Alonzo was living with Elizabeth turner's parents at the time and he was working for them. Alonzo asked her parents for her hand in marriage and they agreed. They immediately rode into Alston, Ga. in Montgomery Co. and Vinney told Elizabeth to go into the Justice of the Peace's office and marry him. She obeyed her mother, even though she was in love with this other man. When "Captain" found out about this, he disowned Alonzo. Alonzo bought his marriage bond Oct.22,1904 (book 1 page 286).9

The 1880 Census doesn't show Alonzo being alive yet.6

Alonzo's grave is not marked.

Died 23 Mar 1975 in Brunswick, Ga. Buried in Palmelta Cemetery, near Brunswick, Ga. Occupation Share cropper.

It has been said by many of the Adams, including her son Raymond Adams, that Elizabeth was a Cherokee Indian, but I have never found anything that documents this.

Elizabeth Turner Adams was a type of person

who spoke her mind to anyone at any time she

pleased. After Alonzo's death she became very

independent because of the hard times she faced

alone. Shortly after Alonzo passed away, his

father, William W. (Capt.) Adams and one of

Alonzo's brothers came to visit. They had just

learned of Alonzo's death and came to offer help

to Elizabeth and her children. It is told that

when they rode up in front of the house in the

buggy, Elizabeth walked out onto the porch and

told them " There is no need to get out of your

buggy. You never cared for or came to visit while

Alonzo was living and I don't need your help

or company now." They just popped the reins

the horse and drove away.9
