Zipporah Lewis

She wore a black dress, sunbonnet and a plaid shawl, the family papers say. Drove an ox cart along the beach to forage for things left behind by waves and storms. Zippy lived alone for 50 years after her husband went to sea and never returned. She used Spanish coins she found on beach as tender and is rumored to have buried many more. The original beachcomer, her house was made and furnished by parts off ill-fated ships that never met their destination. Known as the "Seeress". She purchased property in a land deal known as Lewis' Hard Bargain (1857) for 24 cents an acre. (That property now is the booming tourist resort Ocean City, MD.) Later she lost it all due to back taxes. So much for the Seeress theory!

This women was my great-great grandmother.
