"LIVE N LOUD " : THE GREAT SINGAPORE METAL FEST 97
held at Fire Discotheque on Sept 27th Sat 1997

Before I start on the Scene Report , I would like to thank all friends for providing me the pics & ideas etc for this page . New ideas & contributions are always welcome here , & you guys can rest assured that this ain't gonna be no prejudiced report done by assholes .

Bands that performed that night (in order of performance) were :
Graycode , Brutal Fear , Harvester , Itnos , Impiety , Athotorgh & finally Vociferation Eternity .

Ok , here's a round up of things that actually happened that day . I was down quite early that day , along with 2 of my boys to watch the sound check for the bands . The gig as usual started late around 5:45pm instead of the usual 5pm , but who gives a shit anyway ... ok , to the main report we now go :

Graycode was the first to open the show , to a total crowd turnout of about 600-700 & it wasn't according to the schedule printed onto the flyers . I guess it was a last minute change for the bands , because even the announcer wasn't aware that Graycode was to replace Harvester on stage . Instead , he muttered something like : "Welcome blah blah blah , & we now have HARVESTER to oipen the show for us !" Yeah right ... Fortunately , the members of Graycode came to his rescue & introduce themselves to the already gathering crowd of fans , waiting anxiously below the stage for their idols Graycode to start the storms . I can say , that the show had indeed gone Graycode's way , when they opened the Great Singapore Metal Fest with some really brutal chords & loud vocals that night . Here's a shot of the band pounding away the opening number Graycode . I must say , that their performance really got the mood going for the crowd , who usually take some time to get into the right mood for an evening of loud music . Covers by the band included Brujeria & Carcass as well as a couple of their own songs from the popular demo Cranium . The next band to storm the stage , was that of Brutal Fear , & I guess that it was their first ever live appearance since the release of their Decayed Centuries demo . As tradition permits , the little arena below the stage for fans was almost clear cept' for a few encouraging fans of the band like Zul (of Itnos) & a few others . Anyway , they mostly played stuff from their demo , & even the cover done by the band , was also from the demo , originally performed by Unleashed . To be really honest , I didn't really like the vocals since I first heard it on the demo , but comparing it to live , I would say that it sounded better . However , I was disappointed with their overall performance that night . Songs from their demo which used to be crunching , suddenly turned out to be long-winded & monotonous . Anyway , here's a shot of them on stage Brutal Fear . Hopefully , the band did not go home too upset about their performance that night , as I managed to see their glum faces while they were unpacking . Next up , was the Black/Death act known as Harvester (or Harvestor I do not really know) . Anyway , they finally came on stage , after managing to trade places with Graycode . They did covers of Rotting Christ & Absu , both of which they pulled off pretty well . I guess the worst songs were probably that of their own songs which is yet to be released (new for short) . However , what really puzzled me , was that at the end of their show , Peter could be seen scurrying away from the stage as fast as possible , & I guess in the process he slipped & fell on the way down . It was later known to me , that someone called Kus was gonna "beat" Peter up for reasons unknown to me , so that probably explains the reason why he was running away . Anyway , I hope he's ok now & here's a really great shot of the band in action Harvester . BTW , Yusri (Harvester's vocalist) was his usual cat-like self that day , & Pearce Arai (the lady in black) pulled off some really great guitar work that night . The "All-Star" band also known as Itnos came on next & wow ! you can really feel their magnetism attracting the crowd . The little arena was once again swamped , this time to almost full capacity if I remember correctly when the band came on stage to play . The drummer also pulled a little stunt at the beginning of the show to taunt the crowd , but that only added to the intense atmosphere there that night . When they started off , people were already body surfing here & there . I even got hit various times , but didn't really bother much as it was all in the name of fun . Pretty soon , I had to return back to my place as the masses were really crowding in & I couldn't find space for either me or my boys there that night . I can really tell , that they (my boys) really enjoyed themselves that night , but this was only a stepping stone to what would come on later ... Itnos . Covers by Itnos that night , include Kataklysm taken from the "Temple of Knowledge" album & the immensely popular Cradle of Filth taken from thier "Vempire" EP . I must admit , I was skeptical at first as to how Itnos was gonna pull off the COF cover , but to my surprise , they really managed to do it , with the help of one of their guitarists acting as backing vox on the song . Too bad , there wasn't any keyboard following the COF song , otherwise , it would have been INTENSE ! Anyway , my advice to the guys of Itnos , is perhaps to slow down a while & not play so many shows , otherwise people will soon tire of you guys . Up next , the mighty Impiety , & it was for this reason , that me & my boys actually came down to watch the show . It was the first time this Black Metal outfit with an album & EP to their name was actually playing in Singapore , & I was anxious to know how well they would actually perform here as compared to Malaysia . Impiety As a basic tradition of Black Metal , they came to the stage fully armoured with spikes , chains & leather , though lead guitarist Belphedeus kind of reminds me of a Steve Vai wannabe with his ultra shiny high boots . Covers done by this band that night , included Mayhem's "Follow the Freezing Moon" & also Satyricon's popular "Mother North" . In between , the band played some songs from their "Funeralight" EP & also a new song I believe taken from their new album soon to be released . The air was extremely tense with silence as the 4 infernal warriors slowly made their way up to the stage . The crowd below , was already divided into 2 , namely the Impiety supporters (who banged all throughout their songs & even stormed the stage with them) & the meek on-lookers who just watched on & didn't know quite how to react . In short , their set was short & sweet , I guess I'll be looking out for their new album & also their next live performance as well . Right up till now , the crowd had been patiently waiting the performance of our fellow neighbours , & first up , was the more grinding based Athotorgh . Their vocals , kind of reminded me a little of a cross between Itnos's vocalist & that of Graycode's vocalist . Anyway , fans of grind etc were soon to be seen surfing around again , as Athotorgh exploded away with their brand of songs still new to many of us Singaporeans . I can safely say , that many fans & maybe even the band members themselves enjoyed the evening immensely , as time slowly faded & never seemed to pass . Here's a look at one of our neighbours from across the seas Athotorgh . The only cover which I'd notice they were doing was that of Destruction , but somehow , the vocals didn't seem to follow along as smoothly as the rest of the song . Anyway , I'm sure that the Athotorgh sound has been implemented into all of our minds already . To round the evening off , Vociferation Eternity played some really good melodic pieces as well as hard hitting songs . The only cover which I could make out , was probably that of Celtic Frost . Vociferation Eternity I can say that their style kind of reminded me of a cross between In Flames & Sentenced , also with a ballady approach . The crowd was really surprised when Dark-E (vocal) informed them that one of the songs was actually a love song . Moans & groans could already be heard going all around . But actually , that song was good . I mean it ! No kidding . It was real melodic with the kind of mood to bang/sway to & it really got me going , wanting more & more of this band . Batara Guru (bass) also pulled off a rather fantastic performance with his usage of the 4 strings , & I must admit , that I didn't really know what he looked like up close until the day of the gig . Batara , if you're reading this : Good show ! With those closing comments , I end my second all metal gig report . Ad Majorem Sathanae Gloriam !
