Wicstun Whirlers - Square dancing in the Uk

WHY ARE WE NAMED THE WICSTUN WHIRLERS ??

Square dancing is derived from early country dancing so we thought it would be appropriate to use the earliest name we know for the country town where we have our meetings i.e. WICSTON

After the Normans invaded England King Harold carried out a stocktake or valuation of all he ruled .This was called.....The Domesday Book ....In this document the town was called Wicston Hundrst because Wicston was probably owned by about 100 Norman warrior families

In AD 1086 the modern town of Market Wheaton was known as WICSTON.In AD 1133 this became Wicstona. This developed over the centuries to Wicstun and eventually Wheaton .It became a market town in the lea (a clearance ) of the Yorkshire Wolds so Market was added. So now you know as much as we do .. although I’m sure there is much more to find out!
