Statement

Having followed Java since its inception in 1996, I have developed a variety of different Java courses and applications in the Java language. Recently I have been certified by Sun Microsystems as a Java Certified Programmer and also been accredited by IBM. I have developed a crossword applet for use by electronic magazines and various client server applications for education purposes. As well as regularly contributing to internal Java newsgroups, I have written a Java article for an online magazine.

I am currently looking for Object Oriented work for client server or front end applications in Java.

IBM UK Ltd., European Application Support

1 Year contract

European Application Support (EAS) provides third level support for a variety of data mining products such as DB2 and Visual Warehouse. My role in EAS was to promote the service of our support throughout IBM and provide leading edge Java technology for data mining.
  • Created and maintained departmental intranet site
  • Assisted the production of newsletters to the intranet
  • Developed (Java) widgets and charting tools for the Human Computer Interaction group
  • Developed Java data and analysis products using JDBC
  • Contributed to internal Java developer newsgroups
  • Gave talks to Java developers at internal conferences
  • Positioned Java and JDBC as a data mining development environment

My skills in presentation and training were also used by IBM Education and Training

  • Wrote an introductory course for Java programmers
  • Taught IBM's Java course in the UK and in the Netherlands
  • Taught other Object Oriented Analysis and Design courses in the UK
  • Trained other teachers in Java skills

IBM won a contract for BP Chemicals in London to install and support a WAN across several countries.
  • Extensive customer contact, both at user and management levels
  • Installed and supported a variety of platforms, including Novell Netware, Windows 3.11 and Windows NT 3.5
  • Telephone help desk support for multiple countries
  • Produced detailed technical documentation for WAN configuration for help desk

1995

Project manager for Computer Science Tripos group project (implementing a routing algorithm and user interface) and won best project award.

GAP year work

Worked as a pre university employee on a six man mainframe development project. The system was designed to obtain, collate and process information gained from a connected system of mainframes. It also allowed sysops to produce reports on the current network configuration between machines and support devices (such as data storage units and printers).
