creative block

Okay, here I am. I am a 45 year old corporate dropout who changed careers in the middle of my life. I wanted to be creative. Create things, that's what I was meant to do! Right! I call myself a jewelry artist. I make jewelry....and, I am an artist. It all fits.

So how come, I'm sitting here watching old movies on AMC listening to the neighbors loud music and thinking about all the bills that are due? Why am I not working?

I love making jewelry, I do it quite well...so they say. When I get really creative, people rave about my work. They say I have a "good eye"...although I haven't quite figured out what that means yet. I make mostly one-of-a-kind pieces, I have won awards. When I do nice, artsy shows, I make nice money. I do a little wholesale here and there..Jewelers say my jewelry is ..."FUNKY." It sells well.

So...Why am I stuck? How come I can't create? Why am I working on my web page instead of making earrings? I can do it with my eyes closed. My kids recognize my jewelry on other people all around the city. They know my style. They tell people in stores and walking down the street, "My mom made those earrings." People think they are nuts, but my kids believe in me. They see those earrings on other people and now they understand why I quit my job. To be creative...to make beautiful things...So how come I can't?????

I'M STUCK!!....It's been going on for several days now. I have seen twenty movies on cable, vacuumed the floor ten times, surfed the net for hours and talked on the phone to old friends, but I haven't made anything in days.

OKAY. This is it. I have laid out my stones and metals, got my torch ready to go, found my saw and my blades, lined up all of my tools, turned on the air conditioning for comfort adjusted the height of my chair, organized my work table and now I'm ready.....Oh the heck with it, I think I'll go visit my mom.

help stamp out creative block!!!

Many of my fellow artists and crafters know the frustration of creative block. You want to create, you need to create you have to create and you just can't seem to get started. Help us. Give us your best suggestions for eliminating creative block and getting back on the road to creating beautiful things for the world to see.
