The Isle of Bliss

Major Charactres: Sinbad, Rongar, Maeve, Doubar, Dermott, Firouz, Pasha, Alanna
Minor Charactres: Pasha’s Men, Deaf Young Children, Deaf Villagers

(The Nomad crew is walking through a town)

Sinbad: There’s something about this I don’t like.

Doubar: What’s not to like?

Firouz: Swift, sweet socks, perhaps? (I know this doesn’t make sense, but I couldn’t make it out very well)

Sinbad: It’s just there’s no such thing as a free feast. We don’t even know this Pasha. Why did he invite us here?

Doubar: Perhaps he has heard of our renown and wishes to pay his tribute.

Maeve: Perhaps he wants us to risk life and limb performing some service for his petty gratification.

Doubar: Am I the only one who refuses to look a gift horse in the mouth? Must we watch our backs every minute?

(Pasha and a few other men walk towards the crew)

Maeve: Here comes our answer.

Pasha: Greetings and glad tidings. I am Pasha.

Sinbad: I am Sinbad, and these are my crew.

Pasha: No need for introductions. The seafaring times of Sinbad and his crew are known all throughout the seven seas. Your many and diverse praises are well sung.

Sinbad: Thank you.

(Alanna is watching the crew and Pasha)

Alanna: That’s right. You’re a big fish. Now rise to the bait.

(Pasha is still talking with Sinbad and his crew)

Pasha: I invited you here to provide you with an opportunity to extend your invitation, should you be so brave. There is something that I wish you to get for me. The Singing Sword from the Isle of Bliss.

Maeve: Why don’t we just bring you the moon? And a few stars?

Pasha: So you heard of it?

Maeve: Legendary in the annals of magic. Every fifty years, it grants a single wish. A wish hundreds have died trying to obtain.

Pasha: And the wish will be yours for the asking. Only as long as I have the sword. It’s one-of-a-kind, making a (can’t make out what he says here) One might say priceless.

Sinbad: You just want the sword, and we get the wish?

Pasha: That’s what I’m foreclosing. Well, discuss it amongst yourselves.

(Alanna is watching the crew)

Alanna: Take the bait. Take it!

(The crew is talking amongst themselves)

Sinbad: With the wish, could we release Dim-Dim from the curse?

Maeve: Aye. Magic does not work upon the Isle. I couldn’t conjure for us. We’d be on our own.

Sinbad: I still think it’s worth the risk.

(Alanna is still watching the crew; she laughs)

(The crew goes to Pasha)

Sinbad: We’ll go.

Firouz: This Isle of Bliss is on no chart I’m familiar with. How does one get there?

Pasha: I was able to purchase a map.

Sinbad: Where is this map?

Pasha: Well, right here. Your living map.

(Alanna walks up to them)

Pasha: This is Captain Alanna.

Sinbad: Captain. Of which ship?

Alanna: My ship was lost in the hazards of the Isle of Bliss. It went down with my entire crew. Only I escaped.

Doubar: Our condolences.

Pasha: Captain Alanna will be your guide, and protector of my investment.

Maeve: Why would you wish to attempt something that has already cost you so much?

Pasha: Oh, she’s attempting it for a small fortune. That’s why. She and I already settled on her fee. She will see half of it. The other half will be paid when I have the sword in hand.

Sinbad: Welcome to the Nomad.

Alanna: (can’t make out what she says here)

Sinbad: We leave on the next tide.

Alanna: I’ll be there.

Sinbad: Now, if you’ll excuse us, we have a ship to prepare.

(The Nomad crew leaves Pasha and Alanna)

Pasha: There you have it, Captain. Your new ship. I told you I would make this happen. You’re so fortunate that I agreed to be your generous benefactor.

Alanna: Yes, you’ve been very useful. But I can handle the rest alone.

Pasha: I may be generous, but I’m not a fool. You will require an escort.

(The crew is getting the Nomad ready for the voyage)

Sinbad: Step widely, crew! I wanna be out of here by nightfall.

(Firouz got some minor crewmembers to hoist a tub onto the Nomad)

Maeve: What does Firouz want with a tub?

Doubar: That Alanna’s really something, isn’t she?

Maeve: Yeah, something we shouldn’t trust.

Doubar: She just lost her crew and ship, Maeve. I, for one, intend to make her feel welcome.

Sinbad: Well, it looks like you’re gonna get your chance. She’s coming aboard.

(Doubar goes to greet her)

Sinbad: Maeve, is this one of your premonitions?

(Dermott chirps)

Maeve: At least Dermott agrees with me.

(Doubar almost walks into Firouz’s tub)

Firouz: Careful Doubar!

Doubar: Welcome aboard. Do you have anymore gear?

Alanna: Let’s just say I have some unwanted baggage.

(A group of Pasha’s men come aboard)

Sinbad: Why are these men here?

Alanna: They are Pasha’s wishes. Not mine. Apparently he doesn’t trust either of us with his investment.

Sinbad: Are they sailors?

Alanna: Do they look like sailors? They’ll also doublecross us in a second.

Sinbad: Well, since I didn’t sign them on—

Doubar: We’ll sign them off! Down you go, fancy pants!

Man: Pasha says we stay! (pushes Doubar)

Doubar: Well, as long as you put it that way, allow me to put it this way. (pushes the man)

Sinbad: Okay, let’s do it the hard way.

(The crew fights Pasha’s men, and most of them are sent into the water)

(Alanna goes after a man and almost kills him; Maeve runs and intervenes)

Maeve: Don’t harm him! (points sword at man’s throat) If I were you, I’d take a swim.

(The man jumps over the side of the ship into the water)

(Sinbad and crew gang up on the last man left)

Sinbad: Just leaving, right?

(The man takes a jump into the water; the crew laughs)

Sinbad: Haul up the anchor! Raise the sails! Next stop, the Isle of Bliss. Catch the wind, men! Good fortune rides with us!

Doubar: It’s a beautiful day for sailing.

Sinbad: Never better.

(Opening Credits)

(The crew is on the Nomad; Sinbad walks up to Firouz, and his latest invention)

Sinbad: Now, what do you call this?

Firouz: A relaxation tub.

Sinbad: Huh?

Firouz: You see, I plan to circulate the rushing water of the sea through these feeder lines, down to the other hull of the ship. Through a system of valves, I’ll then be able to (can’t make out this word) the water throughout the tub. Okay.

Sinbad: What’s so relaxing about that?

Firouz: Soothing sensation of water massage.

Sinbad: Wouldn’t it be simpler if I just tied a rope to you and dragged you off the stern for awhile?

Firouz: Point of fact? No. The art of relaxation is a managed environment. Watch. First, I open the intake valve. (opens the intake valve) Then, open the outtake valve. (opens the outtake valve)

(Sinbad laughs)

(The water goes out of control)

Firouz: With every invention, there are kinks to be worked out.

Sinbad: Firouz, all I ask is that you keep the seawater in the sea, and not flooding the deck.

(Sinbad leaves Firouz)

(The crew and Alanna are talking)

Alanna: (can’t make out what she says here)

Doubar: Sinbad (can’t make out what he says here).

Sinbad: It was a joint success. Just like all our voyages. Settled in your cabin?

Alanna: I am. And Doubar has been kind enough to show me the run of the boat. Looks like a fine ship. How does she weather in a storm?

Sinbad: There’s not a more seaworthy vessel on the high seas.

Alanna: Well, she’ll need to be. Until I reached the Isle of Bliss, I felt the same about my ship. And now the fish swim through her.

(Alanna leaves)

Doubar: Do you think she needs more company?

Sinbad: Couldn’t hurt to ask.

(Doubar leaves after Alanna)

Sinbad: (to Maeve) Where’s Dermott? What’s he doing up there?

Maeve: Posting our watch. Like me, Dermott refuses to be much of a joyride.

Sinbad: Maeve, I’m well aware of the seriousness of our voyage, and I know you value your feminine intuition, but—

Maeve: Feminine intuition! UGH! Okay. Tell me this. Don’t women as brave and beautiful as Alanna generally get attracted to men…um…like you?

Sinbad: Why, thank you, Maeve.

Maeve: It wasn’t meant for a compliment. It was meant as a warning. She wants something from Doubar.

Sinbad: He’s simply showing her some good will. Being a perfect gentleman.

Maeve: (runs her fingers down Sinbad’s chest) And she is being a spider…spinning her little web!

(Maeve leaves)

Sinbad: What?! (pauses) (to Rongar) Women! Right?

Alanna: Red sky at night—

Sinbad: Sailor’s delight. I’ve set the course south by southwest, as you suggested.

Alanna: I didn’t suggest it. I ordered it. (pauses) Sorry. Just a force of habit.

Doubar: (walks up to Alanna) Ah, here you are. I was wondering if you’d gone in for the night.

Alanna: Not yet. I thought maybe we could watch the moonrise together.

Doubar: Sure.

(Doubar and Alanna leave, and go to the side of the Nomad together)

Sinbad: He’s a big boy. He can take care of himself.

(Maeve walks up to Alanna)

Maeve: It’s been awhile since you were aboard ship, huh?

Alanna: No, I just lost my balance.

Maeve: You lost your sea legs. You can only hope you haven’t lost your sense of direction as well.

Alanna: Don’t worry, I know exactly where I’m going.

Maeve: Oh? At least we have the stars to guide us, just in case we lose our way.

Alanna: That won’t happen.

Maeve: It better not.

Alanna: Doubar tells me you’re an apprentice magician. That you can be very resourceful with your magic.

Maeve: And what else have you gotten Doubar to tell you?

Alanna: Does my presence create a problem for you?

Maeve: It depends on how you define problem.

Alanna: Well, no doubt being the only woman aboard gave you a certain status, a certain power, and I would imagine you know how to use your female charms and wiles to their full benefit.

Maeve: I am a member of this crew, because I am on a mission.

Alanna: Hhm. And what would that be? Winning the Captain’s heart, perhaps? Good luck on your mission.

(Alanna leaves Maeve, as Maeve almost blushes at her words)

(Alanna is in her cabin)

Alanna: Perhaps our little stargazers need to lose their points of reference. Hhm? (takes out a conjuring bowl and uses magic) (she says some magic words that I can’t make out) Come at once to me.

(Her magic changes night to day)

(Everyone’s in panic above deck)

Sinbad: Everyone! Grab a hold of something!

(Everyone is still in panic, until everything stops)

(Alanna is still in her cabin)

Alanna: There. Darkness no more. (puts her conjuring bowl away, and heads topside)

(Topside, everyone is wondering what the heck is going on)

(Sinbad is at the helm)

Sinbad: Doubar! Rongar! Check the crew and damages!

Firouz: Amazing! What happened to the moon and the stars?

Sinbad: Your guess is as good as mine.

Maeve: Where are we?

Alanna: (walks up to them) No need for alarm. We’ve just sailed through night to the other side of time. It holds forces to the Isle of Bliss.

Maeve: But we can’t navigate without the stars.

Alanna: Well, we’ll just have to rely on my sense of direction. Won’t we? Just keep the sun on your portside.

Doubar: (walks up to them) There are no damages.

Sinbad: And the crew?

Doubar: Rameed is missing. There’s no sign of him in the water.

Alanna: There won’t be. Expect losses now. There’s no turning back. (leaves)

Maeve: That storm was her doing!

Doubar: Are you saying she can control the day and the night?

Maeve: That’s exactly what I’m saying. Control is her field of expertise.

Doubar: Well, I, for one, don’t believe it. Won’t believe it! (leaves)

(Sinbad and Maeve stare after him)

Maeve: That woman is evil. And she has just begun. Sunshine in the middle of the night? Sheer witchcraft.

Sinbad: Maeve? Why don’t you go get some sleep?

Maeve: She’s enchanted Doubar as well.

Sinbad: I’ll talk to him.

Maeve: And I’m going to watch her like a hawk.

(Dermott chirps)

Maeve: Make that two hawks.

(Maeve and Dermott leave)

Sinbad: Doubar!

(Doubar walks up to Sinbad)

Doubar: Want me to take the tiller for awhile?

Sinbad: No. Just a little talk. A little heart-to-heart. Brother-to-brother?

Doubar: That’s what brothers are for.

Sinbad: So, how is your heart, brother?

Doubar: Ah. This is about Alanna, isn’t it? Maeve’s been working on you.

Sinbad: You must admit, we don’t know that much about her.

Doubar: I know what I feel.

Sinbad: Which is?

Doubar: That I like being with her. That I want to be with her more.

Sinbad: You got it bad, huh?

Doubar: ‘Fraid so.

Sinbad: Just be careful.

(Doubar leaves to go to Alanna)

(Firouz is working on his tub; Rongar is with him)

Firouz: Come on, Rongar. Try it.

(Rongar shakes his head)

Firouz: I managed to solve the intake/outtake dilemma. It’s perfectly safe! It’s not dangerous. It’s invigorating.

(Maeve walks up to them)

Firouz: Maeve! You look a little tense. Why don’t you try a relax in the tub?

Maeve: Firouz, I don’t have time. I need you and Rongar to help me out.

Firouz: Ah, sure, what do you need?
