Slayers is about Lina Inverse, a cute, diminutive sorceress (the term witch doesn't seem quite right) She likes to steal from robbers and keep everything! Beside money jewelry and gold Lina is also very fond of magical scrolls and artifact. Her diminutive stature belies her incredible magical powers, she has ben known to flatten entire villages, and her name is legendary among thieves.
This anime is generally a lighthearted affair with the occasional dark bits (often literally so!) The characters are very engaging (something American cartoons seldom accomplish). Unfortunately I have only seen the first series and there are only 3 volumes of manga available, so I won't be able to provide any up to date Slayers info. Here then, are the characters description Slayers from the first series:
She's cute, she's cheerful and she's lively, but underneath all that Lina is actually very powerful. SHe is not only an accomplished magician she also possesses considerable swordmanship skills.
She is a very strong character who knows what she wants and how to get it. Underneath all that apparent greed she is actually a decent person, when push comes to shove she will risk her life to save the world..
While she is cute she is not particularly well endowed and rather short, which is why Gourry thought she was a mere child.
Lina's companion in the first series. Probably the finest swordman in the world. He is not particularly bright but he is honest, easy going, and a real hero,
a very good foil for Lina.
They seem to develop feelings for each other beyond mere guardianship but both do not really know it. Possibly another
Ranma / Akane type relationship (though not as romantic).
Looks like a troll (to me) but isn't. He was cursed by the mighty Rezo. Hi skills in magic matches that of Lena but it is based on a different principle.
I think it's Shaman magic or something, whereas Lena used black magic.
A young mage, princess of Sailoon. Pretty incompetent with magic and fighting. Has delusion of grandeur, fancies herself a hero but not backed up by the necessary skills.
What she lacks in skill she makes up for with enthusiasm. Very honest, naive, kind of cute and another lovable character.
A priestess with white magic skills (healing, defense and generally unoffensive). Her attempts at offensive magic are laughable (in a cute sort of way of course).
She seems to like Gourry a lot, something Lena is not very happy with though she (Lena)doesn't quite understand why...
One mean mother... *ahem!* no, actually for a villain he isn't particularly evil, he is well known for healing the sick with his magical powers.
Possibly the most powerful magician in the series, he was blind at birth and while he can cure other people of blindness, he can't do much for himself.
He eventually resorted to conjuring a mighty demon with the aim of using its power to cure his blindness
Alas, the demon has its own agenda which is to destroy the world given half a chance...
