LUNAR LANDING SITE: Assigned to Fra Mauro region of Moon

LANDED ON MOON: Landing aborted after oxygen tank explosion.

RETURN TO EARTH: April 17, 1970

MISSION DURATION: 5 days, 22 hours, 54 minutes, 0 seconds

RETRIEVAL SITE: Pacific Ocean near Samoa

RETRIEVAL SHIP: U.S.S. Iwo Jima

HIGHLIGHTS: Third lunar landing attempt. Mission aborted after rupture of service module oxygen tank. Fra Mauro landing site reassigned to Apollo 14. Classed as a "successful failure" because crew was returned safely to Earth.

*Jack Swigert replaced Ken Mattingly as the CM pilot two days before launch. Mattingly had been exposed to the German measles by back-up astronaut Charlie Duke.
