Cochran Table Tennis Results
The Cochran family traveled to the Nationals in Las Vegas, Nevada,in December, 1998. In addition to lots of great table tennis memories, the boys spent time hiking and seeing the sights of Utah and Arizona. On the way west from Indiana, hiking and camping at Bryce Canyon, and Zion National Park and Utah's Dead Horse Point State Park were great. Best of all was exploring at Arches National Park in Utah. After the tournament, visits to Hoover Dam and Grand Canyon were enjoyed before heading home for Christmas.

Joey Cochran, 9, lost a very close three game match to Sergey Gutkin from California in the semi-finals of the Under 10 age group. Sergey went on to win the event. Joey is the Under 10 Silver Medalist from the Junior Olympics. He, along with Michael Harris from Maryland, is the Under 10 Doubles Gold Medalist.

Gordon Cochran played great at Nationals, losing a three game match at deuce to 86 year old Eugene Bricker in the Quarters of the Under 1000. In January, Gordon began training as a "chopper" and pulled off some surprising upsets over several players at the South Bend Winter Open in January. His rating has improved to 1049 as a result of these tournaments. This ranks him 21st in the nation in the under 12 age group. Gordon is still only 10 years old, and has high hopes for the '99 Junior Olympics in Cleveland.

Andy Cochran lost a close three game match to California's Wallace Liu in the quarter-finals of the under 1400's at Las Vegas. Wallace lost in the finals. Andy, now rated 1505, is ranked 25th in the nation in the under 14 age group. He will turn 14 in March. He is looking forward to a great tournament when the St. Joseph Valley Open returns to Notre Dame in May.
