Very nice page This is a "what I did last summer" update..and it was terrific. First, a meeting too me to Kansas City and I was able to spend an afternoon at the wonderful Toy and Doll Museum. The collection began primarily focused on doll houses but as they have expanded they are adding more dolls. It is in a lovely restored mansion in a wonderful setting almost on the university campus. Then, before I left I had a chance to visit the UFDC headquarters, enjoyed their collection and spent several hours in their library. Then, New York City for 2 days. I had understood that both the NY Historical Society and the city museum had dolls, an in fact they did...very interesting ones, but the high point was an afternoon with Meredith Waddell, a long time collection of international dolls who is working on a CD ROM for identification. She has much of her collection displayed in her apartment and it was a thrill having her identify them. I made a couple of purchases. On 42the St in Times Square (I was staying in an interesting hostel next to the Port Authority) I happened by a little shop that was selling just about everything, and first noticed the African figures, but on a high shelf were two Mexican carved figures unlike any I had ever seen. I bought one for 15.00. I also bought an African figure the seller identified as probably from the Congo at a weekly weekend market in a school yard across from the Museum of Natural History. I have a friend who lives a couple of blocks away and shops there for New Jersey fruits and vegetables. Then later, a wonderful day at the Strong Museum doll collection. The history of how it has developed and is a very active children's museum with an interesting public library interaction is wonderful. I understand there is a children's museum going into a new condo near Centennial Park here. I wonder how dolls may be integrated into that museum. Well...finally And yes, this is a long one.... I met my daughter and family in Syracuse to see Niagara Falls, and we visited a defunct coal mine in Pocahontas Virginia, just outside Bluefield West Virginia. The town has gone from 6000 to 300 people, but the "exhibition" mine is great and the museum and gift area excellent. There I got my West Virginia souvenir dolls, two little miners made of coal. The larger one is such an interesting contrast to the working Guatemala dolls. The lady your referred to me about her dolls called and left her phone number and I hope to get in touch with her this weekend.
