  Dear Elizabeth, Hello & thank you for writing us at Ecotourism & Adventure / the Guatemala Travel Mall On-Line. My name is Carla Molina & it will be a pleasure to assist you with your travel plans. According to the form you filled out in our website (below) you and 1? other person are interested in traveling to Guatemala next August and are looking at spending 5 nights in our country.  I understand you are interested in doing research to write an article about doll makers in Guatemala. This is a great subject. Congratulations.  We could arrange a customized tour for you and visit the highlands villages where the souvenir dolls are made. You have also probably heard of our ?worry dolls?, these are darling little miniature dolls that come inside a little bag, and children are told to put them under their pillows while they sleep and then all their worries will be gone in the morning. There are other doll makers that I think you should include in your story? they are the women of Uaxactun, in the Maya Biosphere Reserve. They make dolls from corn leaves, and make their hair from corn-hair. They also use some materials from the jungle, such as mushrooms, feathers and flowers they collect, to decorate the dolls? skirts. They make little angels for Christmas and also make Campesino Families.  These are very cute and perhaps you are not familiar with them.  Uaxactun is 23 kilometers north of Tikal, where the children come to sell the dolls made by their moms. I think I am particularly excited about these doll makers because they use only natural jungle products and because they live inside a protected area, which is the most pristine forest and most important from the point of view of biodiversity in all of Central America.  I hope you would consider including them in your visit.    Elizabeth, I could customize an itinerary for you and include Antigua, Atitlan, Chichicastenango, Tikal (and perhaps Uaxactun, too). However, visiting the doll makers? workshops directly might seem like a good idea. I am a journalist myself, by training, and used to work at the BBC in London? so I understand the angles you want to look at this story from.  I really think your visit might also be beneficial to them to really think seriously and hopefully in a more organized manner, what the future could bring for them.  I look forward to hearing from you with more specifics and I would be delighted to assist you with your travel plans! 1 PAX GUATEMALA DISCOVERY 10 DAYS GUATEMALA CITY - ANTIGUA- ATITLAN– CHICHICASTENANGO TIKAL- UAXACTUN

DAY 1 GUATEMALA CITY Arrival in Guatemala City's International Airport from the United States. (We need to know which airline you will be arriving with, flight number & scheduled arrival as soon as possible.) Your hosts ECOTOURISM & ADVENTURE, will meet and greet you at the airport. Transfer to your hotel for check-in. Depending on the time of arrival into Guatemala City we could arrange an activity for the afternoon or evening today… Overnight at Hotel Ciudad Vieja.

DAY 2 GUATEMALA CITY - ANTIGUA Breakfast included at your hotel. Today you will visit the women in the Central Market, who are traditional doll makers. You will have enough time to talk to them about their trade. In the afternoon, transfer to Antigua Guatemala and check-in at your hotel. Overnight at Hotel Mansion del Pensativo.

DAY 3 ANTIGUA After breakfast enjoy the sites of Antigua's colonial atmosphere in a Colonial History Walking Tour with a professional guide. (Entrances to convents and other historical monuments included in your tour today.) Lunch on your own. In the afternoon, at 3:30 p.m., our driver will pick you up at your hotel and take you to enjoy the sites of Antigua's surrounding villages. He will take you to San Antonio Aguas Calientes to visit Carolina, a good friend of ours, who is an excellent weaver and craftsmaker, with whom you will be able to discuss about the production and commercialization of dolls. She will share some stories & textiles with you. Alternatively, you may enjoy a free afternoon. Return to your hotel for overnight at Hotel Mansion del Pensativo.

DAY 4 ANTIGUA Breakfast at your hotel. Free day in Antigua to explore more about the world of dolls and discuss more with the doll makers and the different aspects related to commercialization. Overnight at Hotel Mansion del Pensativo.

DAY 5 ANTIGUA - ATITLAN After breakfast at your hotel, early collective transfer to Lake Atitlán. Check in at Hotel Rancho Grande Inn and immediately embark on a fast boat that will take you across the lake to the Tzutuhil Indian village of Santiago. As part of our Aqua-Geo-Tour participate in ancient traditions and discover Santiago's secrets and ceremonies. Stop along the lake's shores for a dip at over 1200 meters above sea level, at the foot of towering volcanoes. Lunch included in your tour today. Free afternoon to discover more of the lakeside village of Pana, as the town is called for short, on your own or to talk to more doll makers and handicrafts outlets and discover more about the world of doll making and commercializing. Return to your hotel in for overnight.

DAY 6 ATITLAN – CHICHICASTENANGO – GUATEMALA CITY Early collective departure to Chichicastenango, to see the colorful market day. Visit the Iglesia Santo Tomás (Saint Thomas Church), where religious traditions old and new mingle to form a unique setting, we suggest a visit to the the Rossbach Jade Collection. You will have enough time for a walk to the "Cerro de Pascual Abaj", where you will appreciate indigenous ceremonies. In Chichicastenango and its market you will have the opportunity to talk to several women who sell dolls. Transfer to Guatemala City. Check in at Hotel Casa Santa Clara.

DAY 7 GUATEMALA CITY - TIKAL Packed breakfast included. Early transfer to the airport for flight to Santa Elena's International Airport in the northern region of Petén. Transfer to Tikal National Park. Check in at Hotel Jungle Lodge. Guided archeology tour of Tikal. Tikal is the most impressive of all Maya Ceremonial centers, due to its magnificent monumental architecture and the abundance of structures that have been excavated ant restored at the site. Lunch at your hotel. After lunch, visit the Sylvanus Morley Museum, where you will find the pieces that the University of Pennsylvania discovered during 13 years of research at the site. Overnight at the Jungle Lodge.

DAY 8 TIKAL- UAXACTUN An early morning start is optional if you are interested in birdwatching (please let us know if your are). There are 410 species in the Tikal National Park. After breakfast, we will take you to the village of Uaxactún, where you will meet the dollmakers. It would be agood idea to spend the night at the Chiclero Camp, basic but nice, to see more of the women's work and to spend more time capturing the essence of the village. Uaxactun is another impressive Maya archaeological site. Visit the town's Maya art collection. Uaxactun is 18 miles north of Tikal in the Maya Biosphere Reserve and boasts the most ancient astronomical observatory discovered thus far in the Maya World. (We need to know whether you are interested, and if we should include it in your itinerary.) Overnight at Jungle Lodge or at the Chiclero Camp in Uaxactun (recommended). DAY 10 GUATEMALA CITY - USA Breakfast included at your hotel. Transfer to Guatemala City's International Airport. (We need to know which airline you will be departing with, flight number & scheduled departure as soon as possible.) Farewell.
