In 2000 I bougtht one souvenir Malta doll from a lady in Australia. I supoese the little doll went 2/3s of the way around the world. She is plastic, rather like a costume doll, with very blue eyes. Her dress is purple and her faldetta black. Fainges has good photographs in black and white of three dolls from Malta on page 95 of the Encyclopedia of Regional Dolls of the World. She mentions the "Maltese lace" of the traditional bride doll in white.
There are 6 Maltese islands in the sea, but only 3 - Malta, Gozo and Comino - are occupied. The population numbers 400,000.
Like many countries in the area it has been successively under Greek, Roman, Arabian, Spanish, French (Napolean, for a single year), and most recently a based for Great Britain. The Maltese language is related to Arabic dialects in Algeria and Tunesia and is the only Arabic idiom using the latin alphabet.
