Closed events are those chapter events which are open to chapter members and one guest per member.
Member events are events that are open only to H.O.G. members.
Open events are those chapter events which are open to chapter members, national H.O.G. members and other guests as desired.

DIRECTOR'S REPORT

The Head HOG!

We had a great time in Charleston. It was a little wet and cold going over but on Saturday and Sunday was sunny and in the high 70's and low 80's and made for a beautiful day for riding and site seeing. We had a fantastic hotel thanks to Alison.

The Georgia State Rally is to be held in Columbus on September, 21-24h, Alison Mull has secured 50 motel rooms for us at the Rally. They will be on first come first serve basis. They must be reserved through Alison. You cannot call direct and book a room allotted for the Atlanta Chapter. Alison has used her personal credit card to reserve them and must be able to keep up with the reservations. She has approximately 20 rooms at the Host hotel, which is the Hilton, and 30 rooms at the Sheraton. Also, Rene has Rally registration forms at the shop. Please do not hesitate on making your reservations for this rally. Alison is going to try to obtain more rooms at the Hilton but it will be after the June deadline when some may be released from the other chapter blocks. We will have a chapter ride to the rally. Stay tuned to the HOGWASH for details.

We now have an Advertising Officer, Jim Sherrer. He will be responsible for advertising in our monthly HOGWASH. This money will be used for the Chapter to defer the cost of activities to the members. The Chapter will patronize the businesses that advertise in the newsletter. If you have any leads on any companies or businesses please contact Jim Sherrer or me.

I would like to introduce Don Brown as a new Road Captain that will be assisting on our rides and activities.

Reminder, the May business meeting will be held May 4th and the regular meeting will be held May 11th due to the Myrtle Beach Bike Week ride.

ASSISTANT DIRECTOR'S REPORT

Great Turn Out for Bulloch House

Our ride of Sunday, March 26th saw 30 bikes and 36 total folks show up for the journey down south. Unfortunately, one "Sporty" began acting up in the parking lot and while "Frog" and several of the boys were able to get it going, the rider decided not to chance it and headed home. Maybe LaPrade's on the 22nd of this month will make up for it. The ride down took us thru Woodbury to Gay where we stopped for gas and a to relax a bit; then it was on to Warm Springs and the fabulous Bulloch House. After chowing down on some great home cookin' (only "bummer" was they ran out of banana pudding) , several of us "waddled" into town where some of the girls did the craft shop thing while the guys enjoyed looking over a fully restored 1931 Model A Ford and listened to the saloon style piano playing of the "lady who's always there on the porch a playin', I did not catch her name but she is at least 75 years old and plays totally by ear; explaining that she cannot read music.

I only took one wrong turn coming back which took us past Callaway Gardens and then it was time to head home. The whole day was cool and overcast and I was getting chilly by the time my Dyna found the garage. (I had opted for the leathers to remain at home, bad choice). Our group rode very well together and I would like to thank everyone for that-it always makes my job so much easier. We had at least one new member on his (their) first ride...Bill and Becky Grizzard and it was great to see new folks finding out what "being in the family" is all about. For those other "new" members who were also there, I apologize for not remembering by name who you were. There is no camaraderie like the Harley-Davidson style.

Everyone who rode to Charleston knows what a 'wonderful' ride we had going up there. Saturday and Sunday both were very nice days. There were about twenty of us and Charleston really is a fun place to go, we enjoyed it and it's not a bad ride if the weather cooperates. Our accommodations were probably the nicest yet and I thank Allison Mull for that. We had no mishaps that I heard of, it was a very good ride. Some of the best seafood I've ever had was on Saturday night at Hyman's their fried oysters and shrimp are unbelievable, just ask Dan. If you are ever near there, it is wonderful.

Now it's time to get our bikes serviced for the Myrtle Beach ride May 18-21. Ride Captain, Dick Cadou will be leading, and I know he has an article on that so I won't elaborate May 5th - 7th is the Alabama State Rally, Director Dan Gardiner has that one. However, on the 6th Dick Cadou will have a Talladega, Day Ride Tour for those not staying overnight. On the 13th, Assistant Director Tom Sigerfoos will lead the Kink De Mayo Ride. Activities Director, Mike Volk will lead us on the 27th to the Renaissance Festival Ride. And for everyone's information on the 28th is the Rolling Thunder Ride. Look, we have a real good time on these rides, we bought the bikes to ride them, so get them out of the garage and come join us, we really have a very good time and so can you! Look forward to riding with you. Ride today like you want to ride tomorrow!

LADIES OF HARLEY REPORT

River Rafting

June 23-25: The Ladies of Harley are sponsoring this trip in which we will raft the Nantahala River in scenic western North Carolina. This river is easy and well suited for beginners with only Class I - I I I rapids to contend with. We will leave on Friday, June 23rd around 1:00 PM and return on Sunday June 25th. The raft trip is set for 9:00 AM on Saturday, the 24th.

Trip details: We have 30 spaces reserved for the raft trip...cost of raft trip is $31.00 per person; raft money is due by May 23rd! Sign up and pay at the shop...make checks payable to Nantahala Outdoor Center. A river raft trip waiver must be signed-Rene has these and you can sign this when you make your payment. - accommodations are at the Sleep Inn, Bryson City, NC. We have 25 rooms and we could only get rooms with I queen bed per room@ $78-82. Contact Alison Mull at 770-486-8232 to make reservations or cancellations. Rooms must be reserved by 15^th!. For those who want to ride but not raft, Cherokee, NC is only 11 miles further up the road, and provides a fun day as well. There is a ride after the raft trip-see below.

What to Bring for Rafting: sun screen, hat, sunglasses with safety strap, footwear that will NOT COME OFF your feet such as sneakers, sport sandals, or "rock socks", shorts (preferably nylon).

Week End Schedule: Friday. June 23: ride up, check into hotel, dinner, relax. Saturday, June 24: breakfast at 7:30, river check in at 8:30, river trip from 9:00 until 12:30, lunch 12:30 to 1:30, Cheoah Dam Loop ride at 2:00, Sat. night dinner is on your own but we do have suggestions. SAFETY OFFICER'S REPORT

The Safety HOG!

What you can't see can hurt you!

Blind comers have claimed many a good motorcyclists. Never rely solely on road signs. If you have never been on a road or upcoming set of curves, you now become and are essence a rookie. We all know rookies should never push their limit to the max. We should never ride beyond our skills limit. Road signs do not warn of gravel in your lane in the middle of the curve. Road signs do not warn of off-camber curves or decreasing radius curves. While on a motorcycle, mountain twisties are the best thing since sliced bread but they can put you down before you know it. You will go down not for what you know and see but for what you don't know and can't see.

Don't try to 'show up'
Don't try to 'pass up'
Don't try to 'keep up'

If you are riding over your limit or skill. level this can lead to a big 'screw up' Ride as if your life depends upon it, ride within your limits.

Ride to the Georgia Renaissance Festival Saturday, May 27, 2000

On Saturday May 27th there will be a ride to the Georgia Renaissance Festival. We will be meeting at the shop at 9:15 AM and leaving at 9:45 AM. If you have never been to this Festival you have been missing out on a good time. Set in the medieval times there are er 100 shows on the 15 acre fairground. Pirates, knights, mud wrestlers, belly dancers, magic acts, comedy acts and even a five animal show. The whole place is even ruled by a King and a Queen. In our black leather we blend right in. Alabama State Rally Ride Friday, May 5, 2000

Friday, May 5th I will be leading the Chapter ride to the Alabama State Rally. We will meet at Harley Davidson of Atlanta to sign-in at 9:45 AM and leave sharply at l0am. We will make only one gas stop on the way. The Ride will conclude at Ramada Limited Motel in Pelham, Alabama. We will be returning on Sunday, May 7th. The motel was booked early and we have members at other locations so be sure you know what exit your motel is on. You may try after the closing date of March 20th at the Ramada Limited to see if there are any can cancellations. Hope to see you on the ride.

Route 66 Presentation Reminder, Thursday, May 11, 2000

Don't forget our special May member meeting feature which is a photo presentation on Route 66. The meeting will run longer than usual, but I think it is a meeting you won't want to miss. Cinco De Mayo Ride Reminder Saturday, May 13,2000

On Saturday, May 13th, join us for a ride that will take us west and north along back roads and end up at the LaPaz Mexican restaurant at Town Lake, right off I-575 for a 2:00 PM lunch. Our route will leave the shop and take us through Villa Rica, Rockmart and Cartersville (about 95 miles). The food here is excellent and features some dishes not found in many other Mexican restaurants...my favorite are the shrimp enchiladas with black beans along with fantastic margaritas and cold beer (the ride will "officially" end here). We hope you will join us for a fun ride and some good food.

Murphy, NC Day Ride Sunday, June 4, 2000

There will be a day ride to Murphy, NC on Sunday, June 4th for lunch. The planned route for the ride is to go up I-575 to GA 53 and across to Dahlonega and then up GA 60 for some good curves while we're all fresh, past Suches and the T.W.O. and on into Murphy, NC. We'll return home via US 64/74 west into Tennessee and drop south on US 411, picking up I-75 S at Cartersville. This should be a fun filled day and hopefully it won't be too hot by then. All in all, the day will cover around 210 miles from the start point to the intersection of I-75 at Cartersville.

Those going on the Ocoee River rafting trip July 15/16 will get a preview of some of our ride route.

Wild Canada West With Sharon and David

Last year Sharon and I were lucky to find a vacation tour offered by Coast Line Tours of Victoria British Columbia. It was to last over a period of 8 days, and included everything you could want in a motorcycle tour, including a trip to the Calgary Stampede.

Day 1 - Sunday in Vancouver: We spent the day Sunday getting to know our travel mates, and took a ride around the city and up into the hills to see the sites. The weather had been horrible for the past few weeks, up to and including Sunday, but promised to clear up later in the day, and to be perfect on Monday.

Day 2 - Vancouver to Kelowna: The day started Partly Cloudy and Cool, but you could see that it was going to clear up along our route. There were six bikes including David Graham, his wife Carmen, Chuck Gatecliff, and his sons Kevin, and Brent. Sharon and I were on one bike, a nice 99 Road King Classic. We got on the road about 10 AM, and did 300 miles his day over a variety of roads, including Industrial, Rural, Freeway and then up into the foothills of the mountains. We followed the Coquihala Hwy from Chiliwack through Merritt, Kamloops, then headed east through Verona and down into Kelowna. Part of this trip included a 50 mile ride along a river. You know how rivers tend to bend and curve, well the highway did the same. What a ride! Arriving in Kelowna about 6 PM we checked into a nice hotel, and prepared for dinner.

Day 3 - Kelowna to Nelson: Tuesday started as a bit of a bummer. The rear tire on my Road King had picked up a stone along that river road, and developed a leak. We decided to load the bike on the truck and got on the road. Sharon and I got Carmen's FLH, and she doubled up with David. We headed south along route 33 continuing down to the Trans Canada Highway, along that for a while, then picked up route 3 on into Nelson. We made several other stops along the way. One little town had a 1929 Durant auto rusting in the front yard with plants growing out of it. I thought it would be a at restoration project, but Sharon shot that down with "it's a bike or an old car, take your choice." At t next gas stop, John and Jeff stayed behind, and found a Yamaha dealer that let them change the tire using their equipment. We continued on to Christina Lake. There to our surprise were four Harleys waiting for us. Jody, and Jack are a couple, Ray and Bonnie are father and daughter. They had a picnic feast set up and ready to eat. With the late start, and a lot of fun riding we were all hungry. About the time we finished eating, John and Jeff drove up with my Road King all repaired and ready to go. We checked into a really nice hotel right on the lake in Nelso. Dinner at 8:00 PM with Jack and Jody.

Day 4 - Nelson to Revelstoke: I got up about 7 AM and found John with his Buell off the truck and Jack with his new Dyna Super Glide. They said they were going for a quick trip around the mountain. I asked if they would mind if I came along. They did not look to happy about that, so I backed down. Good thing I did. What they meant by quick was very apparent parking lot at IOO KM per hour. The day started to look a bit cloudy in the direction we were going, so when John and Jack returned we saddled up and got on the road. Our route today is RT 31 out of Nelson to

Kalso then into Revelstoke. This was the day of lots of curves in the road, a ghost town, a hot springs, and a ferry ride. We were not able to take advantage of the great roads because of the rain that started shortly after departure. Within an hour we were all suited up in full Leather and Rain Gear. One of the first stops was an old silver mining town that went from boom to bust in a 22 year period. We were not able to ride up to the town, so we parked at the bottom of the road and climbed into the back of the truck. As we were riding up in the pouring rain in all that gear, I got to wondering what I was doing in this situation. I decided I was having a great time with a bunch of great folks. The rest of the day was pretty much in the rain, so we did not take pictures. We stopped at a Hot Springs to warm up for about an hour. Then we continued down the road to the end where they operate a ferry as part of the highway system. It really started to rain on the ferry and when we got off it continued to pour for the rest of the trip into Revelstoke. By the time we got checked into the hotel, and hung up all our gear, it was time for dinner in the Hotel. Then we collapsed for the night.

Day 5 - Revelstoke to Banff: Revelstoke was an old railroad town. The only part of that we saw was the laundry at 7 AM. We got on the road. Cloudy but the day looked like it was going to clear up nicely. This day we went on the Trans Canada Highway over the Purcell Mountains, through the Rogers Pass, then Golden, over I A into Lake Louise and down to Banff. Did we ever get a surprise on the first leg of this trip. Going up to Rogers Pass was just plain cold. We stopped at a gas station to add more clothes. They had an extra electric vest in the truck, so John hooked up a connection to the Road King and I put on the vest. Those things are something else. They will take you from cold to medium rare in about 20 minutes. Lunch on the way to Banff. It was still cold, but looking like it would clear up as we went along. Sure enough, as we got closer to Lake Louise the weather started to warm up. With a Hotel like the one at Lake Louise there has to be something for everyone, including Sharon. Shopping was the order of the day. She discovered that Beanie Babies cost just as much here as in the US. Had to drag her out before she found a credit card. On to Banff for the last leg. We saw a bear up in a tree on the way in, but it is not safe to stop. The weather got better by the minute and by the time we got to Banff it was clear and warm.

Day 6 - Free Day in Banff, Off to the Ice Fields: This was a day to relax, and catch our breath. So we decided we would take a little motorcycle ride by ourselves. We figured 270 miles should be pretty relaxing. We left about 9 AM and drove back towards Lake Louise, and picked up Hwy 93 north to the Columbia Ice Fields. They said you could walk on a Glacier. As we were leaving the Glacier, Chuck, Brent, and Kevin were just driving up. We continued down to the gas station, and stopped for lunch. We arrived back in Banff about 3pm. David was expecting his partner Marty, and his friend Roxane, Marty's son, and his girlfriend. in from Calgary Friday afternoon. Dinner was at 8 PM next door to our hotel. Everyone was there including the crew from Calgary.

Day 7 - Banff to Calgary: the Long way. Saturday dawned with beautiful weather, clear and cool. This was the last day of the motorcycle trip. We were scheduled to leave around 10 AM. We were to take the Banff-Jasper Parkway, Hwy 93 to the Columbia Ice Fields again. The area is where the headwaters of the Columbia river form. At the Saskatchewan River Crossing we head east following the Saskatchewan River to Rocky Mountain House, then South on Highway 22 on into Calgary. About 250 miles. While getting ready to go, a small group of Elk with some young ones came onto the Hotel grounds and grazed. Marty took up the lead on this portion of the trip, and I dropped in. behind him. Now Marty likes to go fast and so do I. I managed to keep two seconds behind him all the way to the first stop. Later we stopped for fuel, then continued on east along the Saskatchewan River. We stopped for lunch at Rocky Mountain House. Marty was leading when we hit the freeway, he and Jeff and John started to pull out from the group. Not being one to miss a little speed, I pulled out and caught up with them. I remember seeing the number 140 KMPH (85 mph) on my speedometer for awhile, but most of the time I just kept 2 seconds behind the guy in front. After about 30 miles of this we pulled off the freeway to make sure the Buells had enough fuel. Good thing we did, a couple of guys on a rice burner said there was a cop with an attitude down the road. The rest of the trip into Calgary was pretty uneventful. The Calgary Stampede, now that's another story.
