DIRECTOR'S REPORT
ANSWERING THE CALL
My "official" challenge to all of you to make this your personal best riding year ever did not get published until last month, but previously I had written about getting involved and participating. So far our 2002 statistics indicate that you all are
really stepping up and taking part...on a grand scale!
<So far this year has been very exciting in terms of the participation we have seen in comparison to what has been our norm. Our ride attendance is way up, averaging 40 to 50 people on each ride and our meeting attendance has exceeded everyone's expectations averaging about 105 to 110...unheard of in the five years I have been here. Folks are volunteering to make calls to new bike purchasers and to serve as greeters at meetings, and it is paying off; we're seeing lots of new faces in addition to those who have regularly been here through the years. So the family is growing, and I hope this trend continues. All of the Officer Board and your Sponsoring Dealer are working very hard to provide the best ownership/riding experience possible and perhaps we're onto something...participation is up.
Looking back at our March month, we had a really good turnout for the S.H.A.R.E. House Easter Egg Hunt and lots of folks volunteered to fill and to hide the eggs for the kids. All of them had a great and fun time, especially when the Easter Benton (or is that the Easter Bunny) showed up on his Sportster and allowed everyone to have a photo made while sitting
in his lap. No one escaped the photo session including all the chapter officers and volunteers. His legs will never be the same. The chapter extends a special thanks to Michelle Smith for providing the Space Walk and also to Chris and Shyra, and Eddie for the wonderful support the dealership provided for the event.
Vern Eldred had a great turnout for the Cherry Blossom Festival Ride down to Macon and if I heard correctly, he had 41 bikes on the ride. These are the number's we only used to see for a "big deal," a onetime event like the Charleston ride, and again it is really encouraging to see all of you turning out in the numbers you have been.
The LaPrade's ride on April 7 saw about 50 folks on 35 bikes show up for that. The weather was not as advertised and when we stopped in Dahlonega for gas, folks seemed very happy for the chance to warm up a bit. It was chilly, the wind was relentless and I did not feel warm all day until we got south of Dahlonega on the return ride. Nonetheless, GA Hwys 60 and 180 were some great rides and we got to LaPrade's right on time. After a ton of twisties, we all sat down to a great meal and it got really quiet once the food began coming out to the tables. The ride home was fun too, being a bit warmer and somehow it seemed much shorter than getting up there. I was especially thankful for a good day to ride as I will be "out of it" for a while following some repair work to my elbow this week...I will have to lead my next ride or two by car, but if Tommy drives, then I can snap some real "road photos" for our bulletin board.
Our May calendar offers no less good riding than the past several. On May 5, I will lead a ride up to Ducktown, TN to El Rio for a bit of Mexican food to celebrate Cinco de Mayo. The route goes up scenic US 411 and then takes US 64 along the Oconee River. On May 12, it is on to Warm Springs to the Bulloch House for wonderful eating again! (Make sure to
get some banana pudding). Then on the 25th there is the P.O.W. Memorial Ride to Andersonville. If a visit to this complex doesn't put a lump in your throat, nothing will; with our "War on Terrorism" being perhaps a bit less of news than right after September 11, this venue will really show you the sacrifices this country has made over its history to provide us the freedoms we so often take for granted. If you like big rides, try this one as it seems to grow each year and no doubt the events of September 11 will have peaked interest in this, the first of two rides there since the attacks last fall.
In closing let me again congratulate all the members who are making this their best riding year ever. You are answering the call. It is very gratifying to see the participation we have so far this year. And again, let your Officer Board know what
you want.
See you on the road!

RIDE DIRECTOR'S REPORT
PROUD PROUD PROUD
That is the word that I think of, when I think of our chapter! On our LaPrade's ride, we had a member go down. He will be ok, just banged up. When the accident happened, I was so PROUD to see how everyone jumped in to help. Some took care of the rider. Some got the bike up and out of the ditch, and some directed traffic. Everyone helped in some way, and
stayed there until the situation was under control. Some members stayed with the rider and bike until help arrived. Part of the group even came back by later to make sure the rider and bike was picked up. A trailer came shortly after the group came back, and everyone helped load and secure the bike. It is good to know that we have those special kinds of people in our chapter that care. One of the things I always talk about is that I tell people that we will NOT leave you behind. This is proof of that, and I personally feel honored to be part of this special chapter!
In March, I called the hogs out to ride, and you have answered by the herds. I'm so glad you have come out in the numbers that you have. GREAT JOB! .
While keeping up the good job of attending rides and meetings, I'm calling on you again. We need your help with some things. We have so many things going we just need some of you to VOLUNTEER to help. We need someone on each Saturday to sell raffle tickets for that Fatboy, for our clubhouse, and I know some of you can talk the ears off a billy goat so this should be easy for you. The Officers and Ride Captains always need help with something, and hey ladies I see a lot of you out there. Get with Patty, our L.O.H. Officer, she always has something going. L.O.H. is a big part of our ride and activities calendar, so ladies lets get involved. I know you have heard all the mushy stuff about how great it is to volunteer, but IT'S TRUE, especially with this chapter. Just a little time goes a long way!
At the end of my Ride Directors Report I always say PARTICIPATE…IT'S FUN!
That's not just a cute little ditty. It's a true statement.
PARTICIPATE…IT'S FUN!
IMPROMPTU, MIDDLE OF THE WEEK LUNCH RIDES
This is for all those members that work on the weekends and don't get to ride with Chapter often, Dale James, one of the salesmen at the dealer, is going to lead some impromptu lunch rides. Dale is going to do a couple a month and I'm sure you will have a great time and some good food.
SONIC SOCIALS
Last year we started these and they were a hit, so we are doing them again this year, but with a twist. This year we are having different locations. You just go to the location nearest you at 7:00 PM on appointed nights. You can ride there on your bike, in the car, bring the family, sit around and talk about whatever, probably Harleys or riding, but that is the idea. You meet so many interesting people on rides but sometimes you don't get to talk very long, this is a way to do that.
See you there!

LADIES OF HARLEY'S REPORT
WOW! What a fantastic ride for St. Patrick's Day to the Blue Willow Inn. As usual the food was outstanding, but they forgot the green mashed potatoes and biscuits this year. We had 42 people show up for the ride. We had an entire room to
ourselves. Thanks to all who came out and rode on St. Patty's Day. An excellent day, an excellent ride with excellent people riding and excellent food. WOW!
S.H.A.R.E. House Easter Egg Hunt
I have so many people to thank. This was a very successful event, but it would not have been without all of the donations that all of you provided. Thanks you so much for your love, generosity and support of the S.H.A.R.E. House. Now for all of you who helped me put this together: BK Ellis, Tom and Tommye Sigerfoos, Harland Moody, Doug and Brenda Turner, Karen and Mike Volk, Polly, Leeann and Roger Smith, Wendy and Jamie, Jeanette and especially Rene' Durham. Thank you for all the hard work and the time you put into helping us make this a success for the kids. I love each of you. Thank you. Who did I forget? Oh, the Easter Rabbit, A.K.A. Lee Benton. Lee thanks so much. You, as the Easter Bunny on a Harley, was too much. You made the day. Thank you and thanks to Vern Eldred for transporting the Easter Bunny to the children. You guys are the greatest! Thank you, to one and all!
Remember, it's hard to have fun if you don't participate in Chapter activities.

Start at the source and work up.
These are simple checks to do, but always refer to your shop manual or check with the service department if you are not
sure and especially if something doesn't seem right.

HISTORIAN/PHOTOGRAPHER'S REPORT
Four Years Ago, April 1998
Savannah!
Friday morning started with a light rain mist, but 15 bikes left the parking lot at about 9:15 AM, the Douglas county Police provided an escort through the rush hour traffic of Thornton Road, and down Camp Creek Pkwy. At exit 69, we picked up more bikes and were then led through Henry County, by the Sheriffs Department. By then it was pouring down raining but
we rode on. At the first gas stop, it was back to an occasional fine mist and we picked up more members. At Sandersville, the group broke for lunch at the Villa South Restaurant. Some great home cooked food and with everyone full, they were off again. After a little ignition repair to one member's bike at the last gas stop, they rode into Savannah about 5:30 PM, where the weather was great. The Shellhouse Restaurant was their treat for a boiled seafood dinner! The next day the group met with the Savannah Chapter at their dealership and together rode through the historical areas of town, while others headed for the beach.

ROAD TRIP(S)
Cinco de Mayo Ride
May 5, 2002
Join us on Sunday, May 5 for a ride just "north of the border" to celebrate Cinco de Mayo, which is a Mexican holiday in honor of Mexico's defeat of French colonialists at Puebla, Mexico in 1862...unfortunately their victory was short lived as Napoleon sent more troops in a year later who was victorious and installed Macmillan as ruler of Mexico. Nonetheless the holiday is still celebrated with much enthusiasm by Mexicans and the U. S has adopted it as seemingly a darned good excuse to party!
We will be going to El Rio in the booming metropolis of Ducktown, TN, which is just across the GA/TN state line. In fact, the state line runs diagonally through town as you will see by the blue dashed line painted on the street. Our route will take us up I-75 to Cartersville, GA where we will pick up US 411 north into Oconee, TN. From there we'll head east on US 64 passing along the Oconee River which is a very scenic ride, past the Olympic Kayaking Center (1996 games) and on into Ducktown. The return trip will be GA 5 to GA 515/I-575. The journey up is about 140 miles and the return leg is about 98. It should be a fun day, so come on out.
WHEN: Sunday, May 5
MEETING PLACE/TIME: Chevron Station on Chastain Road, I-75 N, X-271; meet at 9:15 AM
DEPARTURE TIME: 10:00 AM Sharp!

IMPROMPTU IRON BUTT DAY RIDE
May 18, 2002
If you like to ride all day this one is for you! David Olszewski was going to do this ride but he had something come up, so with his blessing I told him I would take it. I don't know where we are going just that we are going. Going to ride that is, all day long. Thought we would go north, then west, then south, then you guessed it, east. Just be ready to see a lot of country side and washing machines on front porches, oh wait a minute that's my house. Just kidding! Maybe we will try
something new, old or just different but be ready to ride. Thanks Big V.

May 26, 2002
The Flaming Grill & Bar-B-Q is a "biker" owned establishment located just north of Cartersville, GA. The owner does it the old fashioned way by firing the smokers up early every morning (4 am). The food is supposed to be some of the best around. So lets give it a try.

Macon Cherry Blossom Festival Ride
March 24, 2002
In my March Ride Director's Report, I called the Hog's out to ride. You have shown up in great numbers. We had 29 bikes with 41 people go on this ride. It started out on the cool side but as we headed south it warmed up to be a great day for riding. We had several new faces and some guests from other chapters and again you (our chapter) made them feel welcome. I can't tell you how proud I am of our chapter for being open and friendly. Special thanks to Gary, Larry, David, and Lee for helping me get this large group to Macon safely, and thanks to all that went on this ride. See how fun it is to participate?
