DIRECTOR'S REPORT
LET THE PARTIES BEGIN!!
The Harley Party season is upon us! Beginning with the 19th Annual H.O.G. Rally here in Atlanta in July and running through the Georgia State H.O.G. Rally in late October, with that little celebration called Sturgis in August in the middle, the summer is looking like great fun.
By now, all of you have likely received and read (at least once) your Hog Tales for May/June 2002 and seen all the things that there will be to do at the 19th Annual Rally, happening right here in our own back yard. Even for myself, a self confessed "no fan of huge rallies", this one is going to be exciting. From all the information given in Christine's opening article it will be difficult not to feel like the proverbial "kid in a candy store" at the rally, trying to do it all and take it all in. By the time you read this though, pre-registration will be over, so I hope you made your decision early and will be among the H.O.G. only folks enjoying all of that on opening day, Friday, July 19th.
Our own Rene' Durham and her team are working really hard to make this year's State Rally in Jekyll Island the best we've
ever had. One improvement right off the bat is the fact that the rally is in late October. This means much cooler temperatures and weather that will entice folks to be out taking part of all the goings on, as opposed to staying in their rooms to beat the heat and avoid the love bugs which have plagued Jekyll Island rallies of the past. Friday night promises a bit of nostalgia with a 50's/60's concert and a chance to hear some of your favorite beach music. The venue also affords one the opportunity to run their Hog up and down coastal roads with the Atlantic Ocean in constant sight. So it all sounds
like fun, but you need to get registered now. See any of your Officers or Road Captains for an application, or get one from the office at the dealer.
For those who have never been to Sturgis or ridden out west, let me recommend that highly to you. This is unbelievable scenery and everybody ought to see Main Street in Sturgis at least once. Additionally you are only 400 miles from Yellowstone National Park and to its immediate south Grand Teton National Park and Jackson Hole, WY. On the way from Sturgis to these two great places you can go through Spearfish Canyon in SD (right next to Sturgis) and pass by Devil's Tower in WY. If Yellowstone is not your thing then you can go into Cody and take the Chief Joseph Highway (HWY 296) north to US 212 which going north is the Beartooth Highway. These two roads are must do's when visiting
that area. Also WY 291 running south and west from Cody was one of the rides on H.O.G.'s Iron Pony Ride last year and is very scenic. East of Sturgis, of course, there is the famous Badlands and very well worth the visit. Finally, I also think that the Needles Highway and Custer State Park south of Sturgis are "musts" (be sure to take your camera) as well. The park boasts one of the largest buffalo herds you will ever see in addition to other interesting wildlife (mountain goats, bighorn sheep and deer).
So the summer offers tons to do to make motorcycling memories and provide you with tales to share with your fellow riders. If you are having your best riding season ever, top it off with your best and most adventurous summer too!
Ride Safe, Ride Often!!!

Picnic-Picnic-Picnic
June 23, 2002
We are going on a picnic to Red Top Mountain State Park. The Chapter will furnish hamburgers, hot dogs and soft drinks. Now this is important! Attendees are required to bring a covered dish if you are going to eat. It will be at Shelter Number Two at Red Top Mountain State Park.. There is a $2.00 parking fee per vehicle, no matter how many you have in the car or on the motorcycle. Red Top Mountain is on Lake Allatoona near Cartersville, GA, I-75 North. We will have a ride from Harley-Davidson of Atlanta, meeting at 9:00 AM and leaving at 9:30 AM. Lunch will be served from noon till the food runs out. Bring what ever you can pack on your motorcycle, lawn games, bathing suit, etc, for a day of fun and eating. At this time, we do not have a map but we will get someone who knows the area to draw up one and have them at the shop
and at the June meeting.
E-mail
Please update your e-mail address with me. The last e-mail I sent to members about the sale at Harley-Davidson of Atlanta, I got several e-mails back marked as "undeliverable". This was the only way we had to get the word out about the sale, since the Post Office could not read the bar codes on the announcements that were to be sent, so they did not make the mailing. I am sure you would've liked to join in on the fun, free B-B-Q and especially the 20% off sale that day. If there are other members out there that have joined the "e-mail-age" or did not put an e-mail address on your application, feel free to respond also. Just send me an e-mail to hog@mindspring.com and I will add you to the list. Make sure you full name is on the letter.

For those of you getting on Atlantachapterhog Group on Yahoo, please, please include your full name in your profile. I get people every day wanting to join our group, and if I can not identify you as an Atlanta Chapter, H.O.G. member, you will not be granted access! Remember, your name and e-mail address will ONLY be seen by other Atlanta Chapter, H.O.G.

RIDE DIRECTOR'S REPORT
PROUD PROUD PROUD
Rain, Rain go away, come back some other day, at least when we don't have a ride or activity planned. WOW! What a month May has been. Even with the rain, we have had plenty to do. The impromptu middle of the week lunch rides worked real good and our Sonic Socials have taken off, maybe a little wet but still good. Thunder Beach was a Blast with Lee and
Gary doing a great job!!! The other rides so far was good as well. With the BIG one to Charleston, THANKS Eddie, Chris, and Shyra, it was a great time. I also have had the pleasure to lead and meet some really great people, (special group 2), along with many others on various rides. Larry did an awesome job on his El Jalapeno ride, (love them coupons and give aways). Tom, Cinco de Mayo in TN, got some great pictures. David Olszewski, "Ski" for short, bless your heart, got rained out again. Keep at it Ski, you will get a dry ride soon.
I would also like to say thank you to all the VOLUNTEERS that come out to help us. This chapter has never let me down. I called you out to ride and you did. I asked for people to volunteer, sometime, to help out and you did. Now if we could expand all those efforts just a little bit more. I will get off this coke box, or is that soap box., Anyway, was I right about PARTICIPATING. Go ahead and admit it, it was fun, wasn't it? Now just tell everyone else how much fun it is.
June is full as well, so go ahead and sit down and try to figure out what rides to do, or, you can just do them all. There is something a little different every weekend, not counting the stuff during the week. What do I always say at the end of my report?
PARTICIPATE…IT'S FUN!!!

Watermelon Festival
I will need volunteers. Please call me to sign up. Folks, I could also use some more ideas for the festival. If you have an idea, call and let me know. I want this to be a great day of fun. Free Watermelon during festival (Please bring one or two watermelons).
Contest: Seed Spitting, Speed Eating, Arm Wrestling, Relay Races and Three Legged Race, Carrying a Watermelon (Rene suggested this-ask her to explain!).
Watermelons
Two watermelons fell from the sky.
One killed a green toad and one killed a fly.
Fly, he was lucky and died at once.
Toad? Ah...He croaked in the ambulance.
The planes that dropped the melons split.
And, while landing, ran over some twit.
Who'd been sun-bathing on the landing strip.
How many survived the landing--that I'll skip.
Although, the pilot did not apologize.
And asked the hole to analyze.
Concluded that far as he saw.
Hole was much purer than the dough!
Baby, if'n watermelons rain.
No sense in running down that plane.
How to choose the perfect watermelon:
1. Look the watermelon over - choose a firm, symmetrical watermelon that is free of bruises, cuts and dents.
2. Lift it up - the watermelon should be heavy for its size. Watermelon is 92% water, that accounts for most of its weight.
3. Turn it over - on the underside of the watermelon there should be a creamy yellow spot from where it sat on the ground
and ripened in the sun.
Following these tips will help you pick the best watermelon available. Just remember, the keys to picking a great
watermelon are as easy as 1, 2,3.
Remember, it's hard to have fun if you don't participate in Chapter activities.

SAFETY OFFICER'S REPORT
I hope that everyone is getting a chance to ride. The weather has been great and there are a lot of good rides on the calendar. Remember last months meeting when I covered Towing Reimbursement and Road Side Assistance Service and giving options that you have in case of an emergency? My Oyster run was going great and everyone was having a blast! We had just left St. George and stopped at a gas station to top off for the ride to Panama City Beach, when I noticed that my back tire was going flat. I had picked up a large sheet metal screw. What to do?
1. I thought about Road Side Assistance, 60 miles back to the hotel--a hundred plus miles to the nearest Harley dealer.
2. I thought about H.O.G. towing reimbursement, back to step one.
3. I remembered passing a couple of local bike shops on the way down to St. George.
I figured that this would be the best bet since it was 4:30 in the afternoon and on Saturday. Kevin went back in the store to get the phone book so we could start calling (Thanks Dude). Gary took the rest of the group back to try and get help at another shop we passed in St. Joe (Thanks G-man). Vern and Brooke stayed with me and we kept trying to get in touch
with the other bike shop. After trying for a few minutes Dave Firman, owner of Serious Cycles answered. I told him about my situation. Dave told me that he would be there in about 45 minutes and that he would pick me up and fix the tire. Dave arrived, we loaded my bike, then off to the shop. Dave replaced my rear tire so I could make it back home (Thanks Dave).
What all this comes to is, keep your cool - check your options so that you can secure your bike and get yourself to a safe location. It is a good idea to record extra bike shop numbers in your touring hand book just in case of emergencies, like this
one. Copy Serious Cycles' number from the ad in this month,s HOGWASH or see me and I will give it to you. You just never know when things like this are going to occur.
Take care of yourself and your bike.
See you soon!

I would like to take the time to congratulate our Member of the Month for June - and it was unanimous - Rene' Durham. She is the backbone of this chapter and knows it all - backwards, forwards, sideways, up and down. You're the best Rene'! You can read about Rene' in her bio that will be coming out soon along with all the other officers.
Charleston was fantastic - thank you everyone who went and participated in the tours and dinner. It was a true "club" atmosphere. Get ready for next year - we will do it again and add a few extras.
If you don't already listen to Q100 Atlanta at 100.5 on your radio dial - you need to tune in and listen out for the awesome commercials they are doing for Harley-Davidson of Atlanta. Bert's, from the Bert show in the morning, wife just graduated from Rider's Edge Course. She is t-tiny - so ladies don't let your height stop you - sign up now and start riding.
I am proud to announce it is official. Harley-Davidson of Atlanta has challenged the employees of Stone Mountain Harley-Davidson's employees to a softball game and they have accepted the challenge. This is going to benefit the chapters. We will of course announce when it will be as soon as we figure out all the details. We will be charging everyone to come so
that we can raise money. The way we have agreed to work it is the winning dealerships chapter will receive 75% of the money collected and the losing team will collect 25%. Keep your ears open for details of this great softball game coming up - it will be a wonderful time and a super fund-raiser.
Life is hectic, so stop and smell the flowers (but don't forget your Claritin)!
GOD BLESS!
Until next month, be careful and ride safe.

Coming Home Milwaukee
Harley-Davidson's 95th Birthday
Ninety-five years ago several relatives gathered in a small shack and started what, after 95 years, has become the most popular motorcycle company of all time. Yes, a number of our members traveled through the sun, rain, wind and hail to join with our brothers and sisters for an anniversary and a birthday party that surpassed everything we had expected. They will tell you it far surpassed their wildest dreams! The parade on Saturday morning was, accordingly to Allan Farmer, "worth the whole trip just by itself and the "sea" of Harley's in the parking lot was breathtaking."

DEALER LIAISON'S REPORT
First I want to thank everyone at Harley-Davidson of Atlanta and the H.O.G. members for their kind words on the passing of my mother in April. She was 89, and had lived a full and rewarding life. Sharon and I took her in the car once on a ride up to the Dillard House. She fit right in with everyone, ate with the best of them, and had lots of offers to ride. She will be missed.
It appears we are getting a lot more participation from our Chapter members. Attendance at meetings are up and they seem to have taken on a new atmosphere. People are participating, and having fun. Lee's tip of the month has been informative and well presented. Larry, from the Rider's Edge course, has been very informative at the last two meetings. His April presentation on group riding was one of the best I have heard. It seems that just winning a door prize is appreciated more than the prize itself.
I think participation is contagious. More people are coming in on Saturdays and asking about chapter activities. They in turn tell their friends. Speaking about friends, I have been trying to meet new people and make new friends at the meetings. Next meeting try sitting down to eat with someone you don't know.
Ticket sales for the Fat Boy are on the rise. Hopefully we will have that drawing sometime this summer. One of the reasons for the increase in sales is the presence of Chapter members on the weekend talking about the club and selling tickets. Some of the employees have been helping out a lot with the chapter. One of our biggest fans is Leslie, the subject
of our employee profile this month. I am at the shop most Saturdays, stop by and say hello, and tell me about your Harley-Davidson Atlanta experience.
Meet Leslie Vaughters
Leslie Leigh Vaughters has worked in Motorclothes for a year at Harley-Davidson of Atlanta. She previously was a director of marketing for a large printing business. She finds her work experience at HDA less stressful. Born and raised in Marietta, she attended both the University of Georgia and the Art Institute of Atlanta. Her art interests include painting, photography, and visiting museums.
Leslie loves working at Harley-Davidson of Atlanta. She seems to have a connection to the customers. Meeting nights brings out her best in customer relations and she attends all the meetings as soon as she finishes work. On Saturdays, I know she tells everyone she can about the chapter, and the Fat Boy raffle tickets. She has been responsible for a good number of ticket sales. She is planning on getting her Riders Edge certificate soon and has had her eye on a beautiful 2002 Low Rider. Once that happens, I know we will have a enthusiastic member. Maybe she can help Hank Somma with photography duties! If you don't stop by and say hello to Leslie, while you are at the shop, she probably will say hello to you.

Member Comment!
I got back from the Panama City Thunder Beach Ride and had the time of my life!
Hey everybody, I'm writing this comment to tell everybody, what a great time I had at Thunder Beach. This was my FIRST BIG ride with the chapter, and I had a BLAST. I met several great people that are new friends now. Lee Benton led the ride and everything was smooth going down. Then on Friday we went on a ride to Fort Walton Beach, Navarre Island, and down to Pensacola, led by Gary Langmaid. That was GREAT!
Vern and Brooke showed up on Friday night. They couldn't stand thinking of us down there having so much fun, so they showed up on a surprise visit, which made things more fun for us and them. Saturday, Lee led us on an oyster run and I had a blast eating oysters all day, (for the first time ever) and now I love them. The weather was great, people were great, and
the atmosphere was great.
Thanks for the ride, can't wait for the next one.

Cave Springs Arts, Crafts, and Old Cars
June 8, 2002
This ride is a favorite of mine, because of the above. The arts and crafts is in the center of town, it's somewhat shaded and there will be some great food. Does anybody like old cars? OK, OK Lee you can put your hand down. They also have an old car show ¼ mile away at the school. So if you like this type of thing come on out and enjoy. Thanks BIG V.

SOUTHERN HIGHROADS TRAIL RIDE
July 26-28, 2002
I have set the dates for the Southern Highroads Trail ride for this year for the weekend of July 26-28th. This will be a 3-day, 2 night overnight ride through some of the prettiest countryside available in our area.
We'll follow the same route as last year. We will ride north to Tellico Plains, TN where we will pick up the fabulous Cherahola Skyway running from eastern Tennessee into western North Carolina into the town of Robbinsville. From there we will ride the very scenic "Cheoha Dam Loop" bringing us into Bryson City, NC for our first night.
On the second day, we will continue west in NC to Waynesville, picking up the Blue Ridge Parkway and eventually heading south into Brevard and onto Cashiers and Highlands. We will stay our second night either in Dillard, GA or Franklin, NC
depending on room availability.
So make your plans now and mark your calendars to take what was one of last year's best rides and one which abounds with photo opportunities. Do plan to bring a rain suit and cold weather gear, as it is likely that you will need both. The Blue Ridge takes us up close to 5,000 feet and at around 10:30 AM, it is still plenty crisp, even in July!!

Red Top Mountain Ride
April 13, 2002
Well, the weather was sort of iffy that day, but a few of us did show up for the ride to Red Top Mountain. Fortunately, it did not rain on us. While at Red Top, we had the pleasure of watching the Civil War re-enactment of the cannon brigade. The buffet was great and tons of food for just $6. I plan to do this ride again later in the year so watch the calendar.

Estubo Muy Bueno
Although the sky was overcast most of the day, and the cool temperatures made the leather jacket a welcome addition, the thirty seven-mile ride to Villa Rica was quite enjoyable. Twenty-nine people on seventeen motorcycles made the journey from H-D Atlanta while four other members met us at the restaurant. Because of the number of bikes, we decided to travel in two groups. Thanks to Danny, Gary, and Vern for their support on this ride. Good job guys!
Regrettably, no one could interpret the sentence written in Spanish about this ride in the April Hogwash. Translated, the sentence said, "prizes will be given at random to selected chapter members." Those members were: Mike Mashburn, Leeanne Smith, Rudy Preston, Terri Felton, Danny Phillips and Gary Langmaid. Congrats to all!
Also a special thanks to Caroldine Phillips and my wife, Judy, for providing everyone with two for one coupons. So, not only was the food good, it was a bargain! All in all, the first official dinner ride of the year, could not have been better, except maybe I should have saved room for dessert.
Enough said!

Thunder Beach, Panama City Beach
May 2-5, 2002
What a great weekend it was down in beautiful Panama City Beach!. We definitely had a blast down there. I led a ride to Pensacola on Friday morning. Our first stop was at Fort Walton Beach Heritage Harley-Davidson. We proceeded to Pensacola Beach for lunch at Jubilee Restaurant (via the beach roads through Navarre Beach). From there we rode out to Pensacola's Harley-Davidson dealership. It was nice to see my old friends who are still working behind the parts counter and out in the service department. For those who didn't know, I'm from Pensacola.
Hopefully, some of you were able to make it to my 'Mothers Day-Warm Spring' ride.

The Cinco de Mayo ride saw 6 bikes turn out in what started off as very tentative weather, but for those who took the risk, they were rewarded. Our ride departed right on time and within an hour or so we were seeing breaking skies and some sunshine. We stopped in Fairmount to pay the rent on a couple of coffees (also called a comfort stop) and to pick up our last 2-up bike and on we went to Ocoee, TN where we stopped again so I could "drop the top" on my Cutlass and start shooting some ride photos. Not long after this stop we were traveling along the Ocoee River, and it was really rolling. By this time we were in total sunshine--a really beautiful day. The water in the Ocoee was uncharacteristically muddy due to all the rain lately, and we made a stop at a double rapids called "Hell's Hole" and "Powerhouse" so all could observe some rafters making their way through them. We also witnessed some individuals practicing their kayaking skills in the boils. Our
last stop before arriving at El Rio was further up the river at the Olympic Center. We took some photos and walked around the center, most of which was unfortunately closed. The shops are in the process of changing vendors and were closed. In spite of its great location, there is no restaurant here--something to do with permits and such. Too bad, because it would make an excellent location for a place to eat, and the parking is plentiful, for a small charge.
We arrived at El Rio about 1:30 PM and were seated right away. Great food and very reasonably priced. As we left, they were cordon off an area for a street party and firing up the Marachi music. As Copperhill, TN sits right on the state line, a few of us had photos taken with "one foot in each state" and then all headed home in their own direction. It was really a fun day and reminded me that a ride can be a success in many ways, not merely in numbers. Small rides afford everyone in the group to talk to everyone else and get to know them.
On the way back Tommye and I found some new back roads running from Blue Ridge to Ellijay which we will treat you to later in the year with a lunch ride to the Toccoa River Restaurant. These roads were not only excellent road surfaces but they were also pretty isolated in terms of traffic--great for motorcycling!!!
