DIRECTOR'S REPORT
19th H.O.G. RALLY/100th ANNIVERSARY CELEBRATION
July was a month to remember for those of you who participated in our parade and the festivities at the Atlanta Motor Speedway the weekend of July 19-21. Hot as it was, it was well worth it, and a lot of fun.
Our multi chapter ride-in parade was a big success with about 500+ bikes taking part. The day of the parade everything went off without a hitch. Everyone I talked to enjoyed participating in it and thought it was really a special event. I would like to thank the following folks for all their help in making this as easy as it was: John Robertson, Tommy Merritt, Randy Hill and Larry Adams for their leadership at the other chapters in helping to put it all together and supporting the event, along with all the volunteers from the various chapters; the dealership employees for obtaining waivers before the ride; Vern Eldred and others for their help parade day in lining up the bikes; Lee Benton for obtaining last minute waivers; Allan Farmer and the Henry County Sheriff's Department for providing a staging area, selecting the route and the escorts; to Brian Lucey of the Atlanta March of Dimes for his help at the staging area directing traffic in and out; and to Brian and Bill Quinney of Cohutta Water, Inc., for the free water which we badly needed even at 9:30. Thanks also to our regional H.O.G. rep David Gray for obtaining the designated parking areas and potential coverage by HOG TALES, and…to all of you who rode in the event!! In talking to David Gray, there is no guarantee that we will be in the HOG TALES anytime soon, or even at all, but perhaps we will, and while that would be nice, the parade was really intended for the benefit of those who rode in and made their presence known at AMS.
I really enjoyed the weekend and was particularly happy that Jerry Flynn could represent our chapter in the Sunday afternoon Chapter Parade of Flags that kicked off the 100th Anniversary. How he handled the heat down there given his situation is nothing short of miraculous, and Jerry, the chapter is delighted that you could make it!! Tommye got a digital photo of your journey and it's on the Yahoo website. I think my favorites were the two tents entitled "The Journey" with all the history and "The Machine" with its display of all the gas tank logos. I also enjoyed the Journey concert Sunday night
as well. I am very disappointed that the H.O.G. organization itself did not receive more attention; in fact when I saw the tent labeled "Culture" I thought that it would be all about H.O.G., but in fact it was not. H.O.G. was represented only by one large collage of photos in the "Journey" venue. It never occurred to me that the H.O.G. members might actually be a
minority of the Harley owners, but if one considers the number of bikes Harley Davidson has produced over the years, coupled with the fact that H.O.G. did not begin until 1983, perhaps it makes sense. There are some 600,000 plus of us and probably millions of bikes out there, BUT…we're the ones who still know how to have the most fun and who enjoy the sense of brotherhood/sisterhood that comes with being a member. I did get our chapter rocker on the Wall of Chapters display and if anyone knows how those were ordered, I would love to know. It certainly was not alphabetical, but I lucked out and found where to put ours after only a couple of minutes. All in all, a very enjoyable weekend, even if I did spend as much for cold drinks as I did for getting in!!!

WILL HARLEY DAVIDSON SURVIVE??
Interesting question...and the one posed in the article entitled "Will Harley Davidson Hit the Wall?" in the August 12, 2002 edition of Fortune magazine. Some of you might recall that a gentleman by the name of John Halyer came to our chapter picnic and talked Harleys and H.O.G. with several of you. His article has appeared in this edition of Fortune(date is on the spine of the magazine) complete with the photos taken by Alyson Aliano on the Dale Moorfield Memorial Ride. B.K. Ellis and Chris Houghton are both quoted in the article, which focuses on how Harley-Davidson must address and solve the problem posed by an aging population of those who can afford the bikes. Running out of customer base seems to be the point of the article, citing the fact that the folks with the disposable income to buy a Harley are all getting older. The article does not specifically say what H-D plans to do (as if the motor company would let them have that info) but it does highlight
the concern and realization by top company executives that this is something for them to contend with.
Looking at the photos that went with the article, it is interesting to see that out of 5 to 6 hours of continuous shooting of photos, which probably totaled 1500 to 1600 pictures, only 2 were used. One is a close up of a couple from Covington,
GA in front of one of the brick buildings in Bostwick, and the other is a shot from the rear of the line on the ride down. Anybody recognize the guy in the red shirt and white helmet? I especially liked the "4th of July" theme worked into that photo, as the sleeve of the U.S flag shirt worn by the rider of the bike transporting the photographer appears in the mirror of that bike--very creative. You can also read the article (without the photos) if you like by going to www.fortune.com and clicking on the article title.
Happy reading and happier riding!!!!

SOUTHERN HIGHROADS RECAP
Our Southern Highroads Trail ride was again filled with laughter, curves and plenty of good weather. We only had two surprises the whole weekend: first, I was an hour late to my own ride, but it turns out that this probably enabled us to miss
a healthy downpour on the Cherohala Skyway. After leaving almost on time (I did the briefing in a hurry!) we stopped for lunch on the Cherohala at the Tellico Beach drive-in--scenic and good food but no rest rooms, even for paying customers. Next time, we'll eat at Cardin's BBQ but I figured since we were to eat at Hawg Wild the next day (surprise number 2) no one would want it two days in a row. On our way following the meal, we enjoyed a wet Cherohala Skyway but under drying, sunny skies. As we entered Robbinsville, NC to begin the loop around Cheoha Dam, we noticed tons of Mazda Miatas running around all over the place. Turns out they were having a Miata owner's meet up there, complete with a road rally, and several came screaming around us as the group took a break for photos at Cheoha Dam. We pulled into the Rosewood Inn around 6:00 p.m. and the owner greeted us with our keys saying we could check in a bit later; following this she placed a towel on each bike, sensing, I suppose, how we all love to keep our Harleys clean. Following dinner at the
Nantahala Village resort, we all came back to the hotel and congregated in front of two rooms to swap stories and have a few beers while we all got to know each other a bit better. The hotel is a U shaped, older place, very "Fifty-ish," having 25 total rooms and I think this "courtyard" atmosphere really enhanced the opportunity to socialize.
Our second day we started about 10:00 a.m. and took in the Blue Ridge Parkway for about 50 miles, exiting at US 276 taking us into Brevard, NC. Yes, we did have to stop and put on the leathers even though it was around Noon when we did this -- told you it stayed chilly up there! Our day two surprise came as we entered Brevard. Here US 276 emerges suddenly from a canopied highway right into town where Hawg Wild is located. To our surprise it was gone -- the sign was there but the building was not-just a slab where it used to be. As we settled for a Pizza Hut lunch across the street, we learned that a fire had claimed Hawg Wild back in March-not sure if they will rebuild or not. After lunch we hit more of US 276 and then dropped into SC for a few miles before heading back north to NC on US 178, which we took to US 64 W--if you did not like curves this would have been a miserable day for you, because our whole 200-mile day was nothing but curves, so overnight, novices became seasoned veterans! By supper we were all pretty tired.
Sunday we had an easy day without any curves to speak of. We rode for about 45 min and then stopped in Hayesville, NC on NC 69S at the Country Cottage for breakfast; then it was on to US 76 W in GA and into Blue Ridge where we gassed up and decided on our route to Ellijay. All but one of the group who had to "boogie" to catch a plane took the back roads from Blue Ridge to Ellijay where we picked up I-575 the rest of the way back into Marietta.
I think the dozen or so who made the trip all enjoyed themselves a lot. I'm thinking maybe of doing this again in the fall for the colors and also will do the trip in reverse. We missed some good waterfalls and they would be much easier to see going
the opposite direction. The group rode really well together and safety was never an issue, so thanks to everyone for being conscientious about your riding. I had a great time with all of you!

ASSISTANT DIRECTOR'S REPORT
10th ANNUAL GEORGIA STATE H.O.G. RALLY
(NOTE! Pre-registration ends September 12, 2002)
The 2002 Georgia State H.O.G. Rally Committee is busy getting ready for this year's festivities. The rally will be held on Jekyll Island from October 31 through November 2, 2002. The brochures have been mailed to past participants, chapters and dealerships.
We are excited about this year's Georgia H.O.G. Rally and would like to share some of our plans with you. Our welcome gala will be a costumed Halloween party at the host hotel on Thursday, October 31. With the Georgia coast's rich history, a little ghost hunting might be in store. Just don't wander too far from the rally site 'cause you won't want to miss the rest of the weekend.
The title for the rally is "Rock and Roll Forever" with a 1950's beach theme which will include a Friday night Sock Hop, bubble gum, soda pop, hoola hoops, and good 'ole rock and roll music.
We are mixing things up a bit with the main source of entertainment being on Friday night instead of Saturday so all attendees can enjoy the Party as long as they like without having to worry about getting up early and heading home. We'll wind things down Saturday evening with a beachside feast of Georgia's famous low country boil. The awards ceremony will immediately follow.
There will be the traditional Saturday morning parade. The route will take us around Jekyll Island and will no doubt be spectacular. Field events will take place Saturday where we'll mix things up a little more by having some new events for the participants to strut their stuff, as well as some of our old standbys.
We will be having several seminars at the rally site. Topics include Service for your Motorcycle, Group Riding, Protecting Yourself from the Elements and the Importance of Good Riding Gear, and the 100th Anniversary of Harley-Davidson. This list is not complete as we are continually making additions.
The focus of the rally is to ride and have fun. The Poker Run and Observation Run are always rally favorites and this year's will have a slightly different twist. With the multitude of scenic routes in coastal Georgia you won't want to leave the bike for an instant. So be ready to ride!
This is the 10th Anniversary of the Georgia H.O.G. Rally. We are asking that each H.O.G. chapter join in partnership with the rally. By each chapter making a commitment to participate in the rally it ensures our commitment and success for the
future. The rally is a great opportunity for all the chapters to join together in one event to socialize and learn.
Please join us in making the 2002 Georgia State H.O.G. Rally a spectacular event. Feel free to call anyone on the committee with questions regarding the rally.
Thank you.

RIDE DIRECTOR'S REPORT
Are you having fun yet? In August we had a ride or activity every Saturday & Sunday. This month looks to be full as well. The Officers and Ride Captains are doing a great job for you, and in return you have responded in great numbers. Speaking of great numbers, how about our ride from the dealer to the staging area July 19th (about 100 ). Then we filled the parking lot to ride in to A.M.S. I was blinded by all the chrome from the hundreds of bikes that showed up. It was great to see this multiple chapter ride in (thanks Tom Sigerfoos). Thanks to all the chapters that participated in this event. There's that funny word again (participate). What does that mean? The other day, on one of our rides, I was given a great compliment. A couple called me over and said, "you're right, it's fun," I said "what's fun?" they said "participate it's fun!" That's the answer to the question!
This month I have the double pleasure to introduce two more new Ride Captains, Doug Turner and Stephen Flournoy. They both have done the training and have met the requirements and are planning rides for you. So all we need from you our chapter is to participate like you have been doing so well. Thank you for your time and support!!!
Participate…It's Fun!

LADIES OF HARLEY'S REPORT
First, let me correct an error in my August article. There was another winner from our Watermelon Festival, and I humbly admit to forgetting to include him in my previous article. Congratulations to Austin "Strong Arm" Mashburn for whipping up on Tom Sigerfoos in the arm wrestling contest. Way to go Austin!!!
I hope by now all of you have purchased your Covered Bridges of Georgia Tour books and are working toward being the first one to get your patch. If you haven't - what are you waiting for? The covered bridge tour is a great incentive to get you out there exploring Georgia and all its many treasures. I know I've learned a lot trying to find these bridges, and I'll even admit to getting lost a time or two. But like they say, it's not the destination -- it's the journey. Finding these bridges will definitely take you on some wonderful journeys.
With that in mind, each month (or so) I will be organizing a ride to a covered bridge, or possibly two bridges if they are relatively close to one another. In August, we visited the Auchumpkee Creek and Red Oak Creek bridges in southwest
Georgia. On September 29th, we'll ride to the Stone Mountain and Rockdale County bridges. Don't forget your cameras and bridge books for these rides!
Ready for something hot and spicy? The L.O.H. Chili Cook-off will be held October 12, 2002. We're looking for members to enter their chili in the cook-off. Anyone interested needs to register by September 30, 2002; registration will be limited to twenty people. To register either send me an email (hoggette@mindspring.com) or give me a call (770-943-7716).
Have fun, be safe and enjoy the ride!

SAFETY OFFICER'S REPORT
This is GREAT! Now there are rides scheduled every week and there are a lot of new ride leaders getting things rolling. The best of all, more people are showing up for the rides. Now that we have more places to go and a lot more miles to ride
to get there, everyone needs to remember to do their pre-ride checks.
Check tires for wear, but most important proper inflation. Tire pressure will fluctuate from heat, under inflated tires
are more likely to pick up unwanted objects.
Check oil levels more often, engines run better with plenty of fresh oil-especially after running a long time on hot
days.
Check to make sure that your brakes are working properly.
Check to make sure that all lights and signals are working properly.
Basically the best bet is to always check your bike before riding. If by chance something does not seem right, check with the service department or refer to your shop manual. This is what I mean when I say to take care of your bikes.
Take care of yourself and your bike.
See you soon!

If you ever want to help out with any activity or event, please go by and sign up. Don't worry you will not be called for everything, we just need to start a list and we will use it to branch out. Thanks so much for all the help you volunteers have given already - you are very appreciated!

6th Annual Georgia State Hog Rally
Hot, hot, hot, no love bugs, but the heat was definitely on. Some of the members were able to roll into Jekyll Island on Thursday and got started early with the festivities. The celebration spilled over into the next two days and, everyone seemed to have a really good time. The low country boil on Saturday night was great and no one walked away hungry. Atlanta Chapter Members won the Chapter Challenge again this year.
Anniversary Party
This was the first year to have it here at the Dealership and it came off pretty smoothly. Thanks to everyone who pitched in with your covered dishes. Thank you, Kris (Jimmy Stephen's better half) for the mouth-watering Brunswick stew. If you weren't in the first line of people, you missed out. The field events were held in the dealership's lot next door and it was just the right size. We had the weenie-bite, the men's and lady's slow race, balls & cones, the bike balloon toss (a.k.a. the bike wash) and the children's balloon toss. We had good food, good fun and groovy rock 'n' roll.

DEALER LIAISON'S REPORT
If you have been around the shop lately, it is hard not to notice the new paint job. Just before the 19th Annual Rally a gang of painters came in and did an admirable job without too much disruption. Then a couple of weeks ago the shop got an overhaul. The floor was redone, and the walls repainted. Take a look through the window and you will be surprised.
With the arrival of the new models the sales department has been busy moving bikes out the door. I have spoken to several new riders that are anxious to get involved in the H.O.G. Chapter. With all the activities planned we should have a good turnout for the meetings and activities. If you want to see the 2003 bikes, you will have to stop in often and hope to catch one on the floor because they are selling as soon as they arrive.
About the time this article reaches the members, the drawing for the 2002 Fat Boy will be ready to go -- August 24th is the date. If you purchased a ticket, I hope you will be there for the party. There is a good deal of interest in the next drawing for the 2003 Heritage Softail Classic. Let's all get out there and sell those raffle tickets. Pretty soon winter will be here and those outside meetings will start getting cold.
See you at the raffle, and don't forget to look me up on Saturdays and say hello.

MEET DOUG TURNER - NEW RIDE LEADER
Greetings! Just a quick note to introduce myself and my wife Brenda. We have enjoyed motorcycling together for over 25 years. After numerous other bikes we have discovered "The King" (XII) as our best companion for two up riding. We originally joined this chapter just to meet a few other riders to share the road with, but the people of the HDA chapter have exceeded our expectations making for some incredibly great times this year. If you're not going to Gatlinburg, then consider joining us on September 22 for a day trip to Pine Mountain, GA for lunch and a ride to Warm Springs. Remember, "Pigs do fly given sufficient thrust".

FRANKLIN FISH HOUSE RIDE - Sept. 28, 2002
Hey y'all, let's go eat some fish. We will meet at H-D Atlanta at 3:00 p.m. and leave at 3:30 p.m. The leisurely 60 mile two-lane ride to quaint Franklin, Georgia was really fun last year; this year should be no different. The restaurant is located on the square in downtown Franklin with a very nice view of the river. Although their specialty is a seafood buffet (with or without crab legs) other delicious items can be ordered from the menu. The Fish House opens at 5:00 p.m. and closes at 9:00 p.m. An early arrival will assure us of quality seating before the crowd arrives. It also allows everyone to get back before the bugs get out. So if you missed this ride last year, this could be a great chance to redeem yourself. Hope to see you all on the 28th.
Enough said!
J. Larry Smith, Ride Captain, Atlanta Chapter H.O.G.
IMPROMPTU IRON BUTT RIDE
Okay folks, we have a ride for anyone that just likes to take off and ride. We'll meet at HDA on September 14 at 9:00 a.m., leave at 9:30 a.m., and return when we have had enough for the day. I'll have maps and a tentative ride agenda, but
we can modify it as we go along. I thought this one we would start out going up through the northwest part of Georgia, head into Tennessee, swing by the Jack Daniel's Distillery and then ride back into Georgia via northwest Alabama. It should be a nice full day of country road riding.
If you ride safely, you'll ride longer!

ALPINE STEAK HOUSE RIDE RECAP
We had a turn out of 18 bikes and 26 folks. Thanks, I appreciated the turn out for my first official ride as Ride Captain. Scott, Steve, Stuart & Dixie (owners of Alpine) reserved a portion of the parking lot for us, cool. If you have ever ridden to eat with more than one bike, you know how hard it is to park together. They even put a welcome sign for HDA, thanks again. The weather was great and all bikes ran without a glitch, a great job everyone.
Thanks to Andy, Stephen, Doug & Lee for leading & sweeping our two groups. Hey, Rizzo how did you like your first chapter ride? Rizzo has been a member for four years - and by the laughs at the table, I believe she had a good time - I
know I did. We ended lunch with a birthday song for Dan Smyly - Happy Birthday Dan.

OYSTER KING LUNCH RIDE/BB&T SOCIAL
T'was a hot summer's day as we rumbled our way to get some chow up on the hill . . . with 93 degrees and our knees in the breeze we had a glitch we couldn't believe.
When upon the way, a nail made its way into the tire of number 9 . . . pulled out of the pack he could only look back and wonder where he got the tack.
Later on . . . we waited at the bank, the BB&T heat tank, wonderin' when the fun would end...when up rides the Marshall, lookin' for the arsenal and the bandits we seemed to be.
When she found her man, she locked him up AGAIN and if you look and see, the photo of Kevin (NOT ME), you'll know that he's the man and they'll lock him up again...
But until that day, we'll all meet and ride anyway, I hope everyone will come and be with friends like you and me.
P.S. Thanks to all that bared the heat and waited around for the truck. Watch out for those nails in the road and be sure and pass the hand signals back! Thanks also goes to the unnamed officer that took part in the fun and made our wait for the
truck a little more entertaining.
Until we ride again,
Andy Otwell

SPRAYBERRY LUNCH RIDE RECAP
We had a great turn out for the Sprayberry Lunch Ride: 21 bikes / 29 people. The ride along Highway 70 was very nice and cool. I turned the ride lead over to Doug Turner who did an excellent job leading us to the restaurant. I also thank
Vern for leading the second group, and thanks to Bill and Stephen for running sweep for the two groups. The folks at the restaurant were great. As soon as they saw us riding into the parking lot, they began setting up the tables for us. After the lunch Doug and Chris lead a small group to Mt. Cheaha -- it was beautiful up there in the mountains. Chris led us back to Carrollton on excellent back roads.
Ride Safe.
