DIRECTOR'S REPORT
BONDING AND GROUNDING
For someone such as myself having spent 30+ years in the telephone industry, bonding and grounding is a term that refers to all electrical components being tied together to a common ground to guard against incoming surges of electricity.
I have often thought, that this term could also apply to a group of Harley riders going off on a group ride, especially some sort of overnighter. We just recently had a Chapter ride to Asheville, NC and back and I really enjoyed the trip. I like the overnighters because it adds the dimension of getting to know everyone just a bit better than on a day ride, because on the day rides the rider interaction is usually limited to the meal break. On the overnighter, there are several meal breaks and also time to spend at the hotel around the pool, perhaps at the bar, or maybe jammed into one room a la "spring break style" just getting to know each other a little better; also folks tend to break into smaller ride groups and do something together if nothing specific is planned. This past weekend some played golf at the Grove Park course, others headed off to the Biltmore Estate, some went to the dealer and a couple more gave going to Grandfather Mountain a shot. Each of these activities adds to the camaraderie and the whole experience is definitely a "bonding" experience. For me the "grounding" comes just from being on my Harley, with the wind in my face, getting the cobwebs out of my head. I have always found a weekend of riding seems to undo a full week of stress at the office. It's a nice break from all the bureaucracy -- and, I have found darned little politics in riding.
I am really surprised at how fast the Fall is comming along. October is half gone at this writing and by the time you get this we are into November with the Georgia State Rally just concluding. There is a lot to see and do in the Fall. Hopefully we will have some good colors this Fall, in spite of the drought we have had this Summer, plus we now have cooler weather to ride in with less fatigue due to the heat. So find some friends, pick a direction and go do some bonding and grounding!

ROADSIDE ASSISTANCE
Several months back I asked for comments from members who had used the road service provided with our National H.O.G. Membership or the Roadside Service that you can purchase through H.O.G. I guess all Atlanta Chapter Members are riding their Harleys trouble free because I got not one response. Well, I was too, til the Gatlinburg ride. I wanted to ride over the mountain on Saturday to the North Carolina Dealer's Association H.O.G. Rally. Everyone else was content to hang around Gatlinburg and shop. Just as I got to Maggie Valley my engine started coughing and spitting and quit. I was able to push it out of the street and into a motel parking lot. This was not my day, my cell phone would not work there either. The people in the motel were very nice and let me use their phone to call Road America. The operator took my information and said she would call me back within 30 minutes. I did not really believe her but sure enough she did and she said they would have my motorcycle and me picked up within 45 minutes. She had all ready call Gene Lummus Harley-Davidson in Waynesville, NC and said they would take my motorcycle in and get right to work on it. Sure enough in about 40 minutes a wrecker pulled up. We loaded my motorcycle. It was one of those rollback type and we just pushed it up the bed till the back tire was off the ground and then I sat on it with brakes locked til he raised the bed back onto the truck. He even brought tie downs and in no time we were off to the Harley dealer. The crank positioning sensor had gone out. They were able to repair it and put me back on the road around 4:30. This all started about 1:30, so I was really impressed at the
turnaround. But as I said it was not my day, when I went down to fill the gas tank, I noticed the battery was not charging and when I revved the engine it was making a fluttering sound. I went back and they were closing. Since the H.O.G. Rally was close by, they were going to be open on Sunday and would work on it Sunday morning. I had to rent a car, go back to Gatlinburg, get my things and return on Sunday. When I got there Sunday, they said the starter had also went south and they were just about through putting it back together and I was on the road home by Noon.
Now back to Road America Roadside Assistance...if you don't have it, get it! It will be the best $19.95 you ever spend. I am still not convinced that it will work like clock work, like this episode did, but it paid for itself this one time and gives me some piece of mind that if I'm stranded again, I will have a good starting place to find help.

RIDE DIRECTOR'S REPORT
Hey, how y'all doin?
Some people have been asking..."why do the Ride Leaders always ask to see both H.O.G. cards?" The National H.O.G. card expires one year from the date you join, unless you're a Life Member. The local chapter card goes from January 1 to December 31. You must be current with National H.O.G. to keep your Atlanta Chapter card valid. If your National card has expired, then your Chapter membership card is void until you renew your National membership. If you do not have both cards, or either card has expired, you will need to fill out a release form on each ride you join until you make both cards current. All members will be carded on every Also, both must be current to be editable to participate in drawing and/or to
receive door prizes. At sign in, please PRINT the name of the driver on the left side of the sheet followed by the name of any passengers on the right. So help out the new people that might be there and make this REQUIREMENT a smooth transition as you sign in. The Ride Leaders would very much appreciate it. Y'all have done a wonderful job with this, keep
up the good work!
ATLANTA CHAPTER H.O.G. SOCIALS
The Sonic Socials have come to a close because of cooler temps. However. we want to keep the social events going by introducing a couple of new ones to you. ALPINE ADVENTURES on Mondays and TOPPS TALKS on Tuesdays - we'll alternate each week between the two. Alpine Steakhouse in Douglasville has a Monday burger special, and Topps in
Douglasville has a hot wing special on Tuesdays. So if you RIDE TO EAT or LIVE TO TALK, come on out and socialize with us at 6:30 pm on those nights. Come on the bike or come in the cage.

LADIES OF HARLEY'S REPORT
What a great time was had at the Chili Cook-off! There were 12 Chili Chefs with chili to please everyone's palate, but for most of us a cast iron stomach was necessary. Although the weather was a little hot for chili, we still had a pretty good turn out and a lot of fun.
The winners for Best Overall Chili each received a trophy and gift certificate to the dealership - they are:
1st Place - Lee Benton (Bachelor Chili)
2nd Place - Terri Varnum (Just Chillin')
3rd Place - Fay Stringer (Bitch's Brew)
A trophy and gift certificate to Chili's were given for:
Best Name - Fay Stringer (Bitch's Brew)
Most Unique - Jeannette Ashley (Yankee Delight)
Hottest - Paul Gardner (Cool Breeze)
Wimpiest - Terri Varnum (Just Chillin')
Most Deserving of Rolaids - Paul Gardner (Cool Breeze)
Other cooks were: LeeAnn Smith (Hot Damn!); John Bjerre (Dyna-Mite!); Jerome Felton (Butt Buster); Amanda Baker (St. Louis Secret); Windy Holton (Sportster Baby); Mike Jones (Hell's Gate); and Mary Anne Cline (HOG YUM).
Vern Eldred won the Chili Cook Match Game (which was hilarious) and a gift certificate to Chili's - congratulations Vern, you really know your fellow members.
Congratulations to all the winners and a sincere Thank You to everyone who helped make the Cook-off a success. A special thanks to all the Ladies of Harley who provided wonderful baked goods for our Bake Sale.
Trip to Biloxi - Ladies of Harley has planned a bus trip to Biloxi for January 31 - February 2, 2003. Since it's probably going to be pretty chilly at that time of year, we thought a bus trip would be a perfect getaway. For only $135 per person
you get: Round-trip transportation, two nights stay at The Imperial Palace Hotel & Casino, two meals, $10 in gambling money and transportation to schedule events in Biloxi. A deposit of $50 per person is due by November 8 (or pay the entire amount). If enough people do not sign up for this trip, it will be canceled.
Thanksgiving for Share House - At the beginning of November, there will be a large box at the dealership to collect food and other donations for the Share House. Ladies of Harley will make Thanksgiving gift boxes that will hopefully contain everything for a full Thanksgiving dinner and present them to the Share House, who will then provide them to the Share House families in need. Anything that you can provide will be appreciated, but remember if you won't eat it, they will likely not eat it!
Ladies of Harley are asked to please meet at the Pavilion on Saturday, November 23 at 9:00 a.m., for a breakfast meeting
and to prepare the boxes.
Christmas for Share House - Beginning right after Thanksgiving, Ladies of Harley will have an Angel Tree in the
dealership. Each Angel hanging on the tree represents a needy child or mother currently living at Share House who needs to be adopted for the holiday. The Angels will have the child/mother's name, age, shoe size and clothes size so that appropriate gifts can be purchased. In addition, there will be a notebook at the cashier that contains each Angel's Wish List. Feel free to use the Wish List as a guide when buying something for your Angel. When you choose an Angel and provide a
gift, please wrap it, tape the Angel on the gift and bring it with you to the Chapter Holiday Party on December 13.
If you choose not to adopt an Angel but still wish to help, general donations of toys, clothing, etc. will be gladly accepted. We will have a Toy Ride/Christmas Party for Share House on December 21. The families from Share House, as well as
Santa and Mrs. Clause will be there. More information about the Christmas programs will be in the December Hog Wash.
Ladies of Harley will have a Breakfast Meeting on Saturday, December 14 to prepare the gifts, etc. for the Share House Christmas Party. Please plan to meet at the Pavilion at 9:00 a.m.

CALLING ALL MEMBERS, CALLING ALL MEMBERS!!
WHERE ARE YOU??
Where are all the members? Are you out there? As a member of our Chapter for only a little over a year, I must admit that I am a bit confused about our member participation. The Atlanta Chapter (our Chapter) has over 1,000 members - that's a lot of people. Yet when you attend a Chapter Meeting or other event, we see the same 20-30 faces. While I have nothing against these same people - and as a matter of fact, they are great people and lots of fun to be around - it sure would be nice to meet and see more members - I mean really see a full Chapter event. If you read the HOGWASH, it's full of different activities each and every month - surely something for everyone. If you don't see something in there you'd like to do, call your Chapter Officers and let them know. We have said time and again that we are here for you, and welcome all ideas. If you don't participate, you can't know what you're missing.
At each Chapter meeting the Officers and Ride Captains fill you in on upcoming events, we also give out prizes, have a 50/50 drawing and a wonderful dinner after the meeting - all free of charge (except the 50/50 of course) - plus you get great social time with other Chapter members. Why join the Chapter if you're not going to participate? What's stopping you from participating? Can't you find some time to join us for at least a meeting? A new year will begin soon and with that Chapter membership renewals. Why not make a commitment to your Chapter - even if it's just a couple of meetings or rides each year? We'd love to have you!!

SAFETY OFFICER'S REPORT
Got Lights -- Fall is here and so is the time change. Because of this, we will all be doing a little more riding with less daylight. When you do your pre-ride checks be sure to check all lights and signals to ensure that they are working properly. Even though they can hear you, it would help if they could see you.
1. Check all driving lights -- don't forget to check hi-lo beam.
2. Check both front and rear brake switches for brake light.
3. Check tail light -- make sure that the light is good.
4. Check both front and rear turn signals -- emergency flashers.
Take the time to learn what type of bulbs your bike uses and how to replace them. If you cannot remember the type of bulbs
that your bike uses, check with the parts department and write down the P/Ns. Carry this list in your bags just in case. Take
care of yourself and your bike.

GREETINGS HOGS and HOGETTES!
I am sorry I've been missing out on meetings and such lately. I have been really busy opening a scrapbook store near our house. I have missed riding and hanging out. I must say how excited I am for Jeff Williams for being the big winner of the 2002 Fat Boy. I also am very excited for Dirt on winning the MOD V-Rod - Dirt it is soooo you!
Do you want to be the next winner - how would you like too win a 2003 Heritage Softail Classic?
Get your ticket now before they are all gone. You can obtain the ticket anytime you are at the dealership. If you did not
attend the raffle for the Fat Boy - you really missed a great time.
I NEED VOLUNTEERS to help sell tickets for the 2003 Heritage Softail Classic Raffle. You can do it two different ways:
1. Come in on Saturdays and sell them at the dealership.
2. Sign for 10 tickets at a time and sell them own your time.
The tickets sales will be a bit easier this time because we have a date, February 8, 2003. Please help out if you can - we appreciate it.
Calling all scrap bookers! I cannot look at all the memories fading in the photo albums in the dealership anymore. I have gotten black leather albums that are acid free to transfer all the pictures into, and would love to do this on a Sunday. It
would be an all day affair. If you don't know anything about how to scrapbook - don't worry you can learn. I have all the supplies, I just need the hands. Guys this is a great activity for your wife if she does not ride - it is a non riding event - DUH!
I am going to wait until January to schedule a date - because it will be nice and cold hopefully by then. If you are interested, email me at Scrapcastle@bellsouth.net and let me know so I can put you down and notify you of the date.
Okay that is all for now. Enjoy your turkey day and until next month - ride safe.
GOD BLESS!
Until next month, be careful and ride safe.

ROAD TRIP(S)
STEAM & GAS SHOW RIDE
The Second Annual Steam & Gas Show in Cumming, GA will take place Nov. 8 - 10. I will be leading a ride to the show on Saturday, Nov. 9. If you like old steam engines, hit and miss engines, and old tractors of all brands, shapes and sizes, this is the show for you. If you are not interested in this, the Cumming Fairgrounds also offers an operable cotton gin, saw mill, horse powered cane press, and many historic styled buildings (Post Office, Barbershop, General Store, Doctor's Office and Blacksmith Shop). Also numerous vendors will be there selling their wares and homemade goodies - pies and ice cream should be abundant. One of the highlights for me at last year's show was the field events. Somewhat similar to the field events held at a motorcycle rally, but done on tractors in a large pavilion. There should be something of interest for everyone and admission is only $3 dollars. We will meet at H-D Atlanta at 10:00 a.m. and depart at 10:30. Come on out and join us for a day that should prove interesting, educational, and just plain fun!

BEEN THERE DONE THAT!
FRANKLIN FISH HOUSE RIDE - SEPTEMBER 28, 2002
As was the case last year, the weather gods were very kind for this ride. After numerous days of rain, thunderstorms, and just really bad riding weather, we were due for a break. Following a safety briefing, route discussion, and prize giveaway, twelve bikes and 21 people made the 62-mile trip without incident. I would like to mention Bill Headrick and his wife Tina who were attending their first chapter ride. Also, riding with us for the first time was Bill White from Peachtree City. I hope their initial Chapter experience was a good one. Although we were a little late arriving, Skipper the restaurant
manager, had choice seating overlooking the river waiting for us. The buffet was good as usual, but the peach cobbler a'la mode was even better.
A small detour around an accident on Highway 61 in Carrollton on the return trip resulted in even more good back roads riding. A special thanks to Doug Turner for riding sweep.
Enough Said!

BILTMORE ESTATE VISIT RECAP
While part of the group enjoyed a round of golf and others enjoyed riding around the parkway, I lead a small group to the Biltmore Estate. The weather was beautiful that day. We decided to take the self-guided tour throughout the 250+ room
castle. It covered four floors and a basement that featured state of the art equipment for that time period. Each room was huge and it had everything from a two lane bowling alley to a huge indoor swimming pool. After touring the house, we took a ride through the Biltmore Garden, which led us to the converted dairy facility of the Biltmore Winery. We toured the facility and ended up at the wine tasting room where we enjoyed tasting all the types of wine produced at the winery.

IMPROMPTU LUNCH RIDES
Not always just a little ride!
On Oct. 13th I did one of these type rides. One might think that this was just a little lunch ride and be back home in a couple
hours. Sometimes they are, but not this one. We call them Impromptu because we are not sure of the weather or what the destination might be. I decided to go to our beloved Cave Springs and eat at the Greyhorse. Since it turned out nice, I was ready to ride on the rest of the day. Everyone agreed so we went up to Little River Canyon, rode by the country music group Alabama, Randy Owens cattle ranch and recording studio. Then on into Ft. Payne, down to Noccalula Falls and we ate at the Top of the River in Gadsden AL. A good 300-mile day of beautiful weather, riding, rivers, canyons, and water falls.
Vern Eldred, Ride Leader
GATLINBURG RE-RIDDEN
We all earned our water wings on this trip. It started sprinkling before we left the Cracker Barrel. We managed to out run most of the rain except for a shower or two until we started up on the Cherohala Skyway. It started raining and the higher we got, the foggier and colder it got. We finally crawled our way into Robbinsville and stopped for lunch and hot coffee. The weather was nice the rest of the afternoon and we made it through the Dragon's Tail on dry pavement.
Saturday morning was dry but it started raining by the time we got through with breakfast. So it was decision time, to ride or not to ride. Most decided to hang around Gatlinburg and shop. I decided to head out for the H.O.G. Rally in Maggie
Valley, NC. Even though I had motorcycle problems, I think this was the best decision. At least I was able to get the problem taken care of. If I had stayed around Gatlinburg, I would be broken down on the roadside on Sunday and would have been stranded til Monday.
I ran into one of hardest rain that I have ever ridden in on my way home on Sunday. If it had not been for this big white motor home in front of me that I could follow, I would have had to pull off the road and wait til it was over. I managed to keep riding and ran out of it in about two miles.
I had a great time and I hope everyone else did. Maybe we can do it again next year on a drier weekend.
