DIRECTOR'S REPORT
SCRATCHIN' THE ITCH
Most of the bike rags (motorcycle magazines) refer to us who live in the Southern states as "12 monthers," meaning we are usually able to ride year round. Over the past two or three years that statement has been true as we have had more weather friendly days than not. I know it spoils me because it seems this fall, with all the rain we have had and the early advent of winter type weather, there have not been many good days suitable for riding since the end of October. Since my retirement, I am most fortunate in that when we do have a nice day during the week, most instances, I can take off and ride---but lately those days have been few and far between. In these "down times", I develop an "itch" to ride, as we all do. Granted, some of this may be self-imposed, I have to confess the older I get the more of a fair weather rider I become. For now, 50 degrees is my cutoff point, unless there is something special going on. Riding is supposed to fun and comfortable, and I prefer not to be dressed in multiple layers just so I can ride.
So how do you "scratch the itch"? It seems to me that sometimes reading over travel articles in magazines such as American Rider and the HogTales provide some relief. In doing so, this enables me to visualize myself on those rides or perhaps it helps me to recall in detail a ride or trip I took in the past. At other times though it actually makes it worse, by amplifying the fact that "if only not for the weather," I could actually be doing these things. This also applies to many of the videos I have.
Perhaps we can find common relief by participating in the social activities the chapter has such as volunteering at the dealership, or attending chapter meetings. By no means am I implying these things should disappear when the riding weather is nice. However, for now they will have to take the place of riding. The "off season" is also a great time to plan special trips. For example, the route you will take to Sturgis, or figuring out how you will be able to visit all the nationalparks on the trip. My wife will tell you this is my way of coping…as it's not unusual in the winter to find tons of maps spread all over the office floor for weeks on end! A warm garage is a welcoming place to do some customizing on your bike or spend time on that special detail job you have been meaning to do. Maybe the psychologists would tell us to lower our expectations or perhaps form some type of support group. Obviously, those who make such suggestions are not
riders!
So until the nice weather arrives, only the heartiest of riders are taking to the road, the "Itchy and Scratchy "show goes on (well, for me anyway). It is time to get over it and find ways to cope. Now where is that can of ultra fine polish?
FAREWELL, JERRY
It is with deep regret that we inform you of the loss of Jerry Flynn on Tuesday, January 7, 2003. Jerry was a fixture around the chapter and a real inspiration to us all in his brave fight against the cancer that took his life. His funeral on January 9, 2003 was held in beautiful weather, which allowed many of us to ride and carry the chapter flag in saying goodbye to Jerry---just the way he would have wanted it.
The chapter extends our deepest sympathies to Jerry's wife Judy, his brother Charles, and the remainder of his extended family in this time of their loss.
Ride on, Jerry….
CHAPTER CLUBHOUSE VISION
Preliminary conversation with our owners has brought forth a vision of what the chapter clubhouse will look like. The "vision" is for a building that will complement the dealership and includes such facilities, as a large meeting space with
tables and chairs, a full service commercial type kitchen, restrooms, and a large, lockable storage space. Additionally, the meeting room will have a nice Audio/Visual set up which will accommodate presentations via VCR, Power Point on the PC, and projectors, complete with a sound system throughout the meeting room. Sounds like a first class operation----and it will be! The clubhouse will also feature a broad sidewalk entry complete with a brick Bar and Shield logo embedded into
it.
One key to the realization of this is the ability of our chapter to conduct the bike raffles, which boils down to our ability to get the tickets sold. This will entail a lot of aggressive ticket selling by all of our members throughout the week with a concentrated effort at the shop on Saturdays. In other words, we need help virtually every day and every weekend on this. Our next raffle is May 3, 2003, which is not very far off, so let's sale these tickets.
Another way we can also raise funds is by purchasing engraved bricks, which will form the Bar and Shield logo that will be embedded into the walkway to the clubhouse. As plans become more solidified, the exact number of bricks we will need will be determined and then you will have an opportunity to buy these on a first come, first serve basis. Once the number of necessary bricks are sold, that's it! We will not have a need for any extra bricks, so the opportunity will be gone. Furthermore, all the bricks have to purchased at one time, so we will have a special drive on this to get the bricks sold and the order placed. So, start thinking now about buying one of these special bricks on behalf of yourself or perhaps in honor of someone to whom motorcycling is very special.
We will have more details and pricing on the bricks later on down the road.

RIDE DIRECTOR'S REPORT
As your new Ride Director for 2003, I will be coming around asking if you would be interested in becoming a Road
Captain. If you are or anyone you know would be interested in serving as a Road Captain, please get in touch me at 404-788-5117 or by e-mail at ggl7@cdc.gov or galangmaid@hotmail.com.
We are currently down to one official Road Captain even though our officers are considered Road Captains. Thanks Doug
Turner "The Professor" for staying with us. I am holding a Road Captain Meeting / Road Captain Training Class on January
25, 2003, in the Rider's Edge Trailer. Weather permitting we will have a lunch ride afterwards. So, if you are curious about
what it takes to be a ride leader, come on and join us. I am also planning having a Road Captain training class about every
quarter. If miss or just cannot attend the class on January 25, 2003, there will be another class in the near future. Come on
out and attend the meeting/training and let's have a great time this year planning and doing some great rides.

LADIES OF HARLEY'S REPORT
Hey everyone! Well now that the holidays are well behind us, let us get down to focusing on the chapter and plan on getting
some riding in - think Polar Bear Club and Mileage Madness.
Ladies of Harley Meeting - It has been a while since the ladies have gotten together and we need to do some planning for
2003. Ladies, please plan to meet on Tuesday, February 11th at 7:00 p.m. at the Golden Corral on Austell Road. Since
we will be planning our 2003 events, I welcome your ideas, comments and suggestions. See you then!
Sweetheart Ride - I know it's cold and most of you probably haven't been riding, but get ready to join us for the
Sweetheart Ride on February 8th. We will meet at 11:30 a.m. at the pavilion behind the dealership and leave at 12:00
p.m., heading to Dave & Busters in a round about way. We had a great turn out for this ride last year (about 30 bikes); let
us see if we can top that this year. If the weather turns out to be too cold, please ride over by car and join us anyway.
Remember, this is a chapter-sanctioned event and you get credit for joining us, whether you come on two wheels or four.
Happy Valentine's Day!
Chattanooga Ride - Our trip to Chattanooga is scheduled for March 29 and 30 - just a one-nighter. I have reserved a
block of rooms at the Chattanooga Choo-Choo in Downtown Chattanooga. Please call them directly at (800) 872-2529 to
make your room reservation - be sure to ask for the block of rooms held for Atlanta Harley. They have given us a reduced
rate for the night of $79 plus tax, but reservations must be made by March 8th in order to get the discount. We will meet
at the dealership at 9:00 a.m., and leave around 9:30 a.m.

SAFETY OFFICER'S REPORT
Keeping Warm
Whether riding your hog or just being outdoors, keeping yourself warm during the cold season can be easy and comfortable
without making you look like the Michelin Man.
Hunting "base layer" clothing with your local retailer is very effective and inexpensive. The materials I found not only keep
you warm but also wicks the excess moisture from your skin, which traditional cotton thermals cannot do. Furthermore,
inner layers like Polartech and Gore-tex are, made to breathe and allow perspiration vapors out of your clothes. This will
keep you warm and dry. Can't beat that!
It goes without saying that leather jacket and chaps/pants are the most popular outerwear of choice. I have the insulated and
lined variants of HD leatherwear and I love them. Alternatively, there are HD (and other) textile suits that can be very light
weight and comfortable while keeping you warm.
For the ultimate in cold weather comfort, accessory items like neoprene/polypropylene/stomatex balaclavas, heated wool
socks, and H-D heated riding suits might even keep a smile on your face when its' 20 degrees outside. HD has heated nylon
jacket and vest linings in addition to the heated gloves and socks.
No matter which outfit you decide upon, be sure and stop to warm up if you start to feel chilled or your passenger is beating
you on the back of the head signaling you to pull into a warm building.
Be safe and ride every chance you get. The more riders out there, the more aware we all become of bikers on the road.
Until we ride again,
Andy Otwell

great time last year with close to 50 bikes. I have reserved a block or rooms at the Quality Suites (Qualitysuites.biz) the rate
is $89.00 per night, this includes a full breakfast and open bar from 5:30 pm to 7:30 pm. Reservations must be made by
March 25, 2003. To reserve your room call 843-747-7300 let them know you are part of the Atlanta Harley Group to
receive the discounted rate. The dates for the trip are April 25th - 27th.
2003 Heritage Softail Classic Motorcycle Raffle
May is fast approaching and we still have a lot of raffle tickets to sale! Check with your friends, neighbors and co-workers
or perhaps volunteer a couple of hours on a Saturday to sell them at the dealership. We are also working on filling out the
2003 calendar so if you have any suggestions for rides or activities please contact me at 770 943-3129 or by email.

HISTORIAN/PHOTOGRAPHER'S REPORT
Four Years Ago This Month, February 1999
Jim Durham reminds us that if you are on the way to Bike Week in Daytona Beach a good meeting place for lunch or dinner
is JC's Oyster Deck under the Port Orange Bridge. Tables are outside by the Intercostal Waterway.
A change around Harley-Davidson of Atlanta, the new Store Manager is Gary Bell, Steve Norton the Assistant Manager and
Mike Redd is the new Service Manager.
Dan Gardiner, tells us were going to Charleston, SC on April 16 and returning on April 18. Eddie and Chris Houghton will
be the lead ride.
Rene' informs us the Georgia State Rally is coming up in September. The rally this year will be held at The Exchange Club
Fair Grounds in Augusta, Georgia. We have won the Chapter Challenge for several years now so let's keep up the good
work. You will notice that the entry fee has gone up $5.00. Pre-registration is now $30.00.
We now have a Hotline for everyone to call for status of our rides and events. You can call the number day or night for
information.
Safety Officer, Jimmy Stephens, like a lot of us, says the commute to work every morning is long and frustrating. When I am
feeling particularly brave, I ride my bike, always parking in front of our business so I can keep an eye on it. When folks
come in, they always inquire who owns the bike out front. When they find out, it is mine, the conversation turns to how
dangerous riding in metro Atlanta has become. This is how I respond. When I am on the road, FEAR and RESPECT for
riding always keeps me on my toes. I cannot tell you how many times some "nut" has cut me off or try to run over me. That
is why I use the word, fear. It is something we can all use to our advantage to keep sharp and alert on any road, city or
county. So stay alert, watch your mirrors for the "nuts" and yes, FEAR THEM, because they do not RESPECT you!

ADVERTISING OFFICER'S REPORT
Meet Jan Provost, New Advertising Officer
My name is Jan Provost and I am the new Advertising Officer for the Atlanta Chapter, H.O.G. I ride a beautiful custom
painted orange flame 2001 Fatboy, which I love! I took the Rider's Edge Course in October 2001. I rode only as a
passenger for years and loved it! For me riding my motorcycle truly is a great accomplishment and one that I had always
dreamed of doing...ever since I was 10 years old and rode on my first boyfriend's little mini bike! I have always LOVED
HARLEYS!
I have a wonderful, caring and patient (Lord knows he is patient since he helped me learn to ride!) husband, John Provost
and a sweet, smart and beautiful daughter Ashley (almost 16) who I am so proud of! They truly are the joys of my life!
I have worked since I was 14 years old. Over the years, I have been in accounting, insurance sales, nine years as a Vice
President of a German corporation and several years of freight sales before starting my own company.
I have a successful business, called Pizazzz Promotions, which is an advertising specialty and promotional item company. I
started it from scratch more than six years ago and it is a fun and rewarding business. I am also working on a new business,
which will be line of women's casual clothing and accessories with a FUN, WOMEN only logo and theme called Biker Babe
Clothing Company, which will be sold online.
We have already bought three motorcycles (so far!) from Harley-Davidson of Atlanta and we have always supported the
dealership with our business and found it a great place to visit, service our bikes and to meet real nice people. John and I
have met so many great people over the past year or so while attending the chapter meetings!
We have found new friendships that we treasure and look forward to many more years of riding our bikes, growing with the
chapter, supporting the dealership and the HOG chapter as well as our fellow members.

DEALER LIAISON'S REPORT
H.O.G. Around the Shop
This year when my National H.O.G. package arrived there was a 10-year rocker in the packet. I must say that the past 9
years have brought Sharon and I some exciting experiences. Almost every year we have gone on some type of trip to places
we had never been. From Key West to Alaska, the Canadian Rockies the Mountains of Colorado, Yellowstone and Mount
St. Helen. New adventures await us each year. This year Milwaukee calls for the second time.
I think the most rewarding part has been the fellowship of friends made though our contact with the Harley Owners Group.
In the beginning, we belonged to the Atlanta Chapter because it was a way to show where we lived, and whom we were
associated with.
Membership with the Atlanta Chapter of the Harley Owners group is now a part of our lives. As we traveled around the
country meeting new people from other chapters we found that Harley-Davidson of Atlanta was one of the most generous
dealers in the country. Very few dealers help the Chapter the way Harley Davidson of Atlanta helps ours.
Each month the dealership provides the postage for our newsletter. Over the past year they have provided something to eat
at the chapter meeting and they sponsor special events for chapter members through the year. We have a nice place to meet
in the warmer months and they clear out the bikes in the shop on cold nights. Soon we will have a clubhouse for our
meetings and other events. Everyone is always welcome at the dealership and the employees seem to take an interest to each
of us as individuals.
There are very few dealerships in the country, which offers an automatic discount to their chapter members. This year the
dealership has started a new policy that now offers a discount to members that are active in the chapter. If a member attends
two chapter events within a 60-day period, they are eligible for a 10% discount on purchases. A chapter event is
defined as a meeting, a ride, volunteering to help at any sanctioned event or just coming by the shop and spending a little
time helping to promote the chapter. The object of this is not to take something away from the membership, but to increase
participation. Furthermore, if you are unable to participate for an extended length of time, when you do become available
again, just attend a couple of sessions, and we will reinstate your active status. Nothing else has changed…the newsletter
will still go out, the meetings will go on, the rides will happen and Harley-Davidson of Atlanta will still offer superior
customer service and the finest motorcycles in the world.
So come on out and see what you have been missing. Look for me Saturdays at the shop, and make sure you say hello.
David Devlin
Dealer Liaison, Atlanta Chapter, H.O.G.
EDITOR'S REPORT
Letter to the Editor
I want to extend a warm welcome to all the new members and welcome to the Atlanta Chapter. I know that we are going to
have so much fun this year. I am so excited and looking forward to all the activities and socials that are currently in the
works. Special thanks to all the officers' for their generous time, wonderful ideas and creativity that goes into making the
Atlanta Chapter a distinct one.
I received an e-mail a few weeks back that really stood out to me. The e-mail was well thought and put together. The
opinion and attitude from this member was nothing short of, optimistic and accurate. It is my hope that you will benefit
from this members honesty, as I did. I would like to share the e-mail with all of you…
Hello. My name is Gabby. My wife and I became members of this chapter around August of 2002. Now we both have our
own rides and plan on supporting the recent changes made to our chapter. I was at the dealership yesterday having Nicky do
some work to my bike and had the chance to talk to numerous people and some of whom were crying over losing their
discount! I mentioned that Martha and I had gone on the New Year's Day ride and what a good time we had. Some said
they wished they had gone and of course some couldn't understand why we would "waste" our New Year's Day like that. I
have other "friends" who drive from across town to enjoy that discount but seem never to make it to any event no matter
how fun or for what good cause the chapter has chosen to support. Now maybe I should keep my opinion to myself BUT I
NEVER HAVE AND WHY START NOW. Look we are all grown or supposed to be and if it means "dragging" ourselves
to two meeting or coming to help with the behind the scenes things that allow us to reap the benefits that we do then so be
it. I enjoy the fellowship and enjoy meeting new people and ENJOY THE DISCOUNT that we are awarded for being active
members. I work more than 55 hours a week so if I can make it why can't others? HOORAY for whoever made the decision
to change us back from the Harley-Davidson version of the SAM'S club to an energized and growing MOTORCYCLE club!
I am sure we will lose a lot of dead weight in the beginning but, over the year we will get new members who will be willing
and happy to participate.
Thanks for listening to my thoughts.
Gabby, Atlanta Chapter, H.O.G. Member
Now, how great was that? I encourage you to e-mail me if you have anything you would like to see published in upcoming
newsletters. I believe it to be important to read and learn about members in the chapter, their ideas and/or concerns as well
as the officers' monthly reports.
