DIRECTOR'S REPORT
ATLANTA CHAPTER H.O.G., 2004
Although this is the January newsletter, I am sure that this will reach most of you in late December, so I would like to wish all of you the happiest of holidays. I hope you get all those Harley things (or other things) you wanted and have a great time with family and friends.
Although I like the holidays and a change of seasons, I am really looking forward to winter rushing on by. Once Christmas is over, I find myself ready for spring. I do not like it getting dark at 5:00 p.m. and barely getting warm only from noon to 2:00 p.m. every day. And why is it that you can always find a breeze when it is 32º outside but not when it is 92º? I have not seen my bikes since early November (detailed and under their covers) and I relish the thought of it being time to take those off and fire 'em up!
Since we do have a bit of time off from riding, and as Old Man Winter blows into town (he's obviously not a Harley rider) I would ask all of you to think of some things you would like to see the chapter doing this year, whether it be a special ride or some activity you want to do. We can always use some fresh ideas, and some fresh legs to go with those, so I would also ask you to think of volunteering some time to the chapter this year -- we can always use your help and our Activities Officer, Terri Varnum is the person to contact. All of these activities will count towards your participation, just like attending rides and meetings. One thing we can always use is more Road Captains to plan and lead rides, and Gary Langmaid is the person to contact if doing this is of interest to you. It is a bit of a responsibility, but it is also a lot of fun, and training is provided. The more you put into the chapter the more you get out of it, and if lots of folks volunteer, each one only works a small
amount of time. I know we have asked before but with the many new faces in the chapter, I hope we will get many ideas and new volunteers.
This may sound very similar, in part at least, to last month's article. In a recent meeting with David Gray, our Regional H.O.G. rep, we were discussing the size of ride groups. He shared with us that H.O.G. recommends that each five to seven riders have a Road Captain for safety reasons and if not, then the ride should be cancelled. I daresay if we followed those guidelines, we would cancel most of our rides (unless every officer and road captains went on every ride). That isn't what you want, is it? None of the officers want that either, but it serves to emphasize the point that we are at a bare bones minimum with the number of folks to lead rides. Activities, too, see the same few folks mostly carrying the load over and over. So, what'cha say? How about it? Can we count on you this year?
The chapter officers will be having their annual meeting later this month and we can incorporate any new things folks want starting then. We will be discussing what changes we think we want to make, what things we want to do and also will begin
to fill in the ride calendar, so don't hold back -- let us know what you want!
Chapter business meetings are open to all members and will be held the 1st Tuesday (a change from the 3rd Tuesday) of the month, beginning in January 2004.
Meanwhile, as winter sets in you can refer back to the February 2003 HOGWASH for some ideas on how to pass the "downtime". So while you plan, polish or accessorize, think of what you can contribute -- and thank you in advance for doing so! Remember--"If not me, who, if not now, when"?

P>MEMBERSHIP EXTENSION
If you treated yourself or someone you love to a new bike, remember -- your National H.O.G. membership is automatically extended by 12 months. So, for example, if you had five months left on your existing membership when you bought your new bike, it will now be 17 months before that National membership expires. And...if you have been an Associate Member and bought a new bike you get the 12 months full membership plus a pro rated share equal to half the number of months you had left on your associate membership. Let's say you had four months left as an associate member when you bought your new bike. You will receive the 12-month full membership for the purchase, plus two months (half of four months pro rated associate membership) for a total of a 14-month National full membership. I imagine a lot of our new women riders are falling into this category as they leave the passenger pillions of their husbands/boyfriends bikes and begin riding their own.
Pretty nice H.O.G. benefit, eh?
Tom Sigerfoos
Director, Atlanta Chapter, H.O.G.
RAFFLE REMINDER
We're only about a fourth (<100) of the way towards our next raffle. I respectfully remind our membership that it is up to ALL of US to get these tickets sold. Most folks who have bought tickets have been told that the drawing will be in early spring, so we have a job to do. The bike is paid for, but we will not hold the drawing until we sell all 400 tickets. Please everyone, take a few of these tickets and try to sell them.

Director, Atlanta Chapter, H.O.G.
DEEPEST SYMPATHIES
The chapter extends its condolences to Rene and Jim Durham upon learning of the death of Jim's mother on December 9.
The chapter also extends its sympathy to the family of Bob Ardizzini and his wife, Rhonda, and upon learning of his death
back on October 29.
The chapter keeps all of you in its thoughts and prayers.
Tom Sigerfoos
Director, Atlanta Chapter, H.O.G.
WIND CHILL FACTOR
Just a reminder that until we get our meeting facility built, all chapter member meetings will be held outside in the pavilion -- brrrr!. We are looking into additional side curtains and portable propane space heaters to get us through the next few months. In the meantime, dress warmly and be aware of the heaters, please. Also the sooner we sell the raffle tickets and get those funds in the sooner we can get started on our permanent space.
As far as the facility goes, Chris has gone back to the construction companies who bid on the job and tried to get them to "sharpen their pencils". The total project cost unfortunately exceeded Chris' expectations and so the fine tuning process has begun. Also some work on the dealership building is needed and must take precedence over the meeting facility, so there is a bit of competition for the funds so to speak, which is very common for any business. Chris, however, wants all of us to know that he is committed to the meeting facility and is doing his best to get this going for the chapter.

LADIES OF HARLEY'S REPORT
Happy New Year!!!
Well here we are starting another year and I don't know about you, but I'm looking forward to more wonderful rides and great memories with our family and friends, and of course our motorcycles and our chapter. I hope this year will be the year
you decide to get more active in the chapter - believe me you'll have more fun and a much better overall experience when you get involved.
Congratulations…
to all the ladies who successfully passed the Riders Edge class in 2003. Hope to see you all out there riding your own bikes
real soon. Go Ladies!!
Share House Christmas
Thank you, thank you, thank you to all who helped make the Share House Christmas such a success. Without your generosity and Christmas spirit, their holidays would not have been as bright. You truly outdid yourselves and from the bottom of my heart - thank you.

SAFETY OFFICER'S REPORT
At the last chapter meeting I covered some new ride ideas that we are going to implement in order to increase rider satisfaction, increase rider safety, and increase rider participation. Ideas covered at the last meeting were new rider
orientation rides, new riders staggered between experienced riders, breaking ride groups into three different groups based on rider stamina and skill level, and the five little pigs rating. While I have my own opinion of which item is the top contender for increasing ride participation, the chapter answered with an enthusiastic response as to which one(s) they liked the best.
The two items having the biggest chapter response was the three different groups and the five pig ratings. I will now give you a more detailed description of these two majority winning votes.
Split the pack. On most of our rides we like to keep each group to between 10-12 bikes. Sometimes it is higher, sometimes it is lower but 10-12 is our general rule. At the ride leader's discretion, we are going to allow the him/her to offer a separation of riders based on their interest. If riders are interested in scrubbing floor boards, jiffy stands, or frame rails by riding a little faster pace, then the ride leader can offer this to group one. The next group or groups can take a more modest pace on the ride and can enjoy the curves, weather, scenery, whatever. The last group is for the modest of the modest and can definitely enjoy the scenery without worrying about who's behind them and how fast they or anyone else in their group would like to go. As a general rule, the first group (or first two) will pull over and wait for the remaining riders before any
significant change in directions is on the plan. This group riding configuration will hopefully provide each rider with the day's ride that they wanted to have.
The five little pigs. As we discussed group riding, we talked about rider skill and the difficulty level of certain rides. As we were talking the one to five scale came up, and right after that the one to five pig scale came up. It's funny how ideas surface during meetings. Anyway, as any ride leader can tell you the approximate mileage of a ride, how long between stops, how curvy the roads are, if the conditions are favorable for poor weather, they can just as easily give it a one to five rating. Therefore, you will soon start to see one to five ratings on our chapter rides. The one pig rating is for the steady cruising rides that should be of relatively short distance, easy on the throttle, few curves, etc. These rides will be perfect for those new to group riding and for those just wanting to take a relaxing ride. The two pig rating might be used for rides that are a bit longer or have some curves but nothing too challenging. Also, if a one pig ride is starting to display unfavorable riding conditions then it could be bumped up to the two pig ride. The three pig ride should be of moderate difficulty. Anyone comfortable with their machine should have a satisfying three pig ride while getting to enjoy more curves, more distance, or a little more throttle than one or two pig rides. The four and five pig rides will be rated based on a high number of curves, long distance, a long time in the saddle, rough road conditions, speed, and weather conditions. If you are new to riding you will not want to go on a four or five pig ride right out of the shop. Those fluent in curves, distance, and with ample seat time will probably find themselves pouring over the Hogwash searching for the four and five pig rides or asking
around about when and where the next one is going to be. In any case, we are striving to provide a well-rounded calendar that will appeal to everyone interested in group riding.
If you attend an event or ride and it was not what you expected, then please try attending another event and see if the previous experience was based on a particular destination, mishap or person. I've had folks approach me that might not have
had a great time on one ride but had an absolute blast on another (and many other rides). Be sure to let us know what you think; we always welcome constructive criticism.
I look forward to participating in the 2004 events and contributing to providing the chapter with more interesting destinations with enticing points of interest along the way. We are here to provide a structured calendar of rides and activities to the chapter. If you would like to see something on the calendar then please let us know.

FACTOID
We start up a new year and roll forward into 2004 bundled in thermals, thick sweaters, and leather. As our cold season is upon us I'd like to remind you all of the impact the cold temperatures have on our tires. The dropping mercury means
dropping tire pressures. A good rule of thumb is for every 10-degree F change in temperature (up or down) equals 1 psi change in your tire pressure. If you haven't checked your tire pressure since it was 75 degrees outside then now's your time to check it again.

POTPOURRI
Harley-Davidson Racing
A former Stephens County resident played a large role in an Atlanta racer recently winning three motorcycle races at Talladega, AL.
Brian Wilson, a mechanic with Harley-Davidson of Atlanta, prepared Chris Carr's motorcycle when he won three races in the American Historic Racing Motorcycle Association Battle of the Twins.
Carr's regular racing bike couldn't be made ready for the Talladega weekend. He used a Buell XB 12 off the showroom floor.
"On the Thursday morning before the races, I drove to Albany to pick up the bike and returned to Lithia Springs. Harley-Davidson of Atlanta mechanic Brian Wilson spent all Thursday night preparing the bike for this final racing weekend. Brian is one of the best wrenches in the business," Carr said.
"He's pulled more than his share of all-nighters, so it was business as usual for him. He did a fantastic job and our program would not have been successful without him," Carr said.
Wilson said he intends to collaborate with Carr on putting together a more potent engine with even more horsepower for next year's racing' season.
"We have been down on horsepower all year. We think this new 1200 will help us overcome the deficit," Wilson said.
The American Historic Racing Motorcycle Association season will resume February 26, 2004 in Jennings, FL.

MEMBER COMMENT(s)
Hello everybody! Thanksgiving has come and gone and Marta and I wanted to share our ride with you. We decided to do an untraditional turkey day, so we rode our bikes to Myrtle Beach and attended the 7th Annual Turkey Tally. It was 72 degrees when we arrived, moderately crowded, motels CHEAP and plenty of things to do. We went on the poker run, went to the vendor show and participated in the bike games at Suck Bang and Blow, where yours truly gave an Atlanta H.O.G. Chapter spanking to the locals in the board ride event and almost to the slow crawl. We came in 3rd in the wiener bite contest (Marta's just not as hungry as she used to be -- hee hee). We left on Saturday and rode to Charleston where we spent the night on Market Street and walked around that night. But what a wonderful surprise we had Sunday morning, a 26-degree wind chill! So we leathered up and made our way home with the assistance of a few extra coffee stops. Stay tuned to see if we had a Christmas ride adventure. Hope you had a great holiday season.
