DIRECTOR'S REPORT
BRIDGING THE GAP
As you are reading this, I am eagerly anticipating my next doctor's appointment later in the month which will hopefully see me get the "OK" to begin riding, working out and just resuming "normal" life as I knew it. Hopefully to by mid-month the
weather will begin to warm up a bit.
In the meantime, I have gotten together with friends and we've planned a few bike trips, gone to a bike show, had dinners together and just hung out. These are friends that began as "riding friends" and have become just good 'ol regular friends,
meaning that our relationship now is not dependent upon riding activities as the reason to get together. The fact that I am, in most cases, older than my friends made me think about how this really seems to make no difference in the relationship we have. In some cases I am more their parents age than theirs, but in our relationship we all seem the same and have lots in
common.
I find it very interesting that perhaps under different circumstances none of us might have had any reason to spend time together at all was it not for the bonds we developed, initially rooted in our common love of motorcycling. This I think is very unique to those who are in the Harley family, and no doubt many of you can relate to this feeling and experience. The bike is the initial common tie that gives us the opportunity to meet and get to know one another, but it is the riding experience or "the journey" that brings life to the relationship, and it builds from there. The ownership of a Harley and participation in H.O.G. seems to bridge all gaps, whether they are based on age, sex, occupation, ethnicity or anything else that makes us different from each other. When we are on those bikes, we are all just "riders" and friends. In my experience this equality carries over to all other aspects of my friendships. What started out as riding friends now sees us becoming scuba diving partners, ski buddies, movie goers, dinner groups and so on. The list is endless.
Our chapter mission statement in part says that we "...create lifelong memories through personal relationships...; I know this certainly holds true for me. I have made more friends through the Harley experience in seven years than I probably did
working for the same company for 30 plus years. So in this regard, participation in our chapter rides and activities certainly sets the stage to make new and wonderful friends and to create those memories you will cherish for a lifetime. When I was choking on the price tag of my first Harley the salesman said to me, "Well, Tom, when you are 80 years old and you see a Harley go by, you can say one of two things. I wish I had owned at least one Harley in my life, or I remember the great times and good friends I had riding mine." I choose the latter and when I am 80 I intend to still be riding. Look out, now!

CHARLESTON, SC SPRING RIDE SET
Our annual spring ride to Charleston, SC is set for April 23-25 and is a ride you won't want to miss! Charleston is a very quaint, historical town with delicious food and wonderful scenery to go along with it---the Old Market, the plantations, the Battery area, Rainbow Row, Fort Sumter and Patriot's Point.
Our ride will leave from Harley-Davidson of Atlanta at 8:30AM; please plan to meet by 8:00AM to get signed in and attend the ride briefing. We will pick up a group on the east side of Atlanta, exact location to be determined and announced in the
April HOGWASH.
RIDE RATING: 3½ Pigs
WHAT: Charleston, SC Ride
WHEN: April 23, 2004
WHERE: H-D of Atlanta
MEET: 8:00 AM
DEPARTURE: 8:30 AM
DO YOU FEEL THE NEED, THE NEED FOR SPEED?
If so, stay tuned for more details in upcoming issues concerning the Top Gun Ride on June 12th to be sponsored by Killer Creek Chapter. They want as many folks from all metro chapters as possible to participate in a charity fund raiser for The Center for Children and Young Adults. The big feature of this escorted ride which originates from Hooters on Hwy. 41 will be at the end when all bikes ride roar down the runway at Dobbins AFB with a good possibility of the Blue Angels passing over at the same time. After the ride there is a big "hangar party" which will feature commemorative T-shirts for sale and a silent auction to raise even more funds. Big John will provide details as they are forthcoming, so mark your calendars.
ADVANCED SKILLS RIDERS COURSE
The subject of the ERC (Experienced Rider Course) came up at the chapter officers' annual meeting and I have asked Adam Towns of Riders Edge about conducting this one day class.
Adam has several issues to deal within attempting to do this, however. First the range or tarmac has to have additional painting done to it to accommodate this class and this is no small expense. Secondly, we are not sure of the demand for the class and it would have to be worked in with the Basic Class schedule which already demands all of their time. Additionally, enough classes would have to be scheduled to make painting the tarmac worth the cost, so this could be a real balancing act.
Finally all of these instructors are under contract with the state, who grants their license, and must uphold the conditions of their license. This fact makes it a bit sticky for them to "waive" bikes with loud pipes. This is an area where they are trying to have some open dialogue with the state licensing body. At a state sponsored class, bikes of all types are present and
Harleys with pipes other than stock are frequently eliminated during the bike inspection which immediately precedes the class. I have asked Adam to try to make the point that if all the bikes in a proposed class are Harleys and the pipe issue is known going into the class, could the instructor be given some leeway to deal with this. It does pose a safety issue if the
instructor cannot be heard and the resulting potential for liability may be the crux of this issue. Adam and Larry have told me that they will look into this.
We will keep you updated on this issue. It is unfortunate about the pipe problem because this is a great class and one that folks might want to take more than once. I know I would like to go again. As it is, not many Harley riders can take advantage of it. Meanwhile, please think about whether this course would interest you and let one of the chapter officers know that you would like to take it.

ASSISTANT DIRECTOR'S REPORT
GROUP RIDING: LESSONS LEARNED!
During some of the long Chapter rides that we took last year there were a few lessons that we learned that can apply to a one day ride or a ride that takes a few days.
1. On a large group ride that gets broke into two or three smaller groups. One or two groups can pull out from a gas stop together but you're never able to get all three groups out. So there is going to be some separation. Don't worry about it, we'll all get there.
2. Whether you are a Ride Captain, Sweep or someone just along for the ride and the fun, everyone needs to pay some attention to landmarks so that if someone has to leave the group, goes down, has a mechanical problem, or whatever someone needs to be able to tell the Ride Captain where that person left the group. A lot of time can be expended trying to locate a missing member when the Sweep has stopped with them and no one knows for sure where they pulled off.
3. The Harley Credo " Ride and Have Fun" applies to everyone. Whether it's your first time on a group ride or you are an experienced group rider keep in mind that you can contribute to the other riders having fun and the level of fun you all have. Simply put, if you are a very experienced rider and you feel like you just can't go at the slow pace the group is taking then
get a copy of the map and go at your pace, have fun and we'll see you there. Likewise if you are new to riding or more specifically group riding and you know that the ride will be taking a lot of curves or be traveling on the interstate and you aren't comfortable traveling at 60 plus miles per hour, then let the Ride Captain know so arrangements can be made for someone to stay back with you or for you to get the directions and meet the group at the destination. Again have fun and enjoy yourself. Don't feel pressured by the group or pressure yourself to ride beyond your abilities. But you also don't want to have a negative affect on everyone else having fun.
We will be starting a new Class in February. It is basically a Group Riding Class or Group Riding 101. It is open to everyone, new members, new riders, experienced riders, (old) long time members, everyone. There will be a $10.00 charge to offset the cost of materials. You will receive a small booklet that will fit in you saddlebags or windshield bag, etc… and a vest pin similar to the Riders Edge pin. You will view a video on group riding then we will go out for a group ride utilizing some of the techniques that we have learned. You will have your booklet to carry with you to review from time to time. The first class is going to be on Saturday Feb. 21st starting at 1:00 pm. If you have any questions you can call or email me.
See you on the road.
