Member Benefit Change
Membership benefits will be changing with the New Year. Beginning January 1, 2003, all members will have to participate in a minimum number of two (2) Atlanta Chapter, H.O.G. sanctioned events every sixty (60) days. Atlanta Chapter, H.O.G. sanctioned events include chapter meetings, business meeting, rides, LOH meetings, volunteer efforts, and other special events as noted on the Chapter Calender.
Member participation is required to maintain your in-store discount at Harley-Davidson of Atlanta.
All other Atlanta Chapter, H.O.G. privileges will remain the same.

LIVIN’ THE LIFE
Several of us were attending P.O.T. this past weekend, April 2-3 in Hot Springs, VA (which was anything but..) and several recurring themes concerning our riding of Harley-Davidson motorcycles were presented to us.
One of these themes was “Livin’ The Life” which has to do with being active in H.O.G. and passing on the legacy of Harley riding to the upcoming generation of riders. They talked about the common thread among Harley riders being twofold: first, obviously, is the brand of motorcycle we ride, the world’s best and most sought after, the Harley Davidson. The other has to do with the sense of family that comes with each one, new or used, and what the rider has available to him or her for the taking.
Participating in motorcycling through an organized approach such as H.O.G. is what they call “Livin’ The Life”----sharing rides and road stories, creating memories and friendships that last a lifetime. The sense of family is what gives life and a legacy of brotherhood/sisterhood to these bikes. It is interesting how in 20 years, H.O.G. has also created its own legacy and identity along with that of these wonderful machines which have weaved theirs over the last 100 years. Think about this---Harley Davidson has a separate organization under a vice-presidential title which is entirely devoted to its customers, the riders and whose focus is on events, riding and the use of those motorcycles. I think that says a lot about how important the Motor Company believes our having fun as a family is. Sure it is good business, but what other company has such an organization?
This uniqueness is indeed our legacy. It is through H.O.G. and our participation in the national and chapter events that we form this bond with one another and keep this heritage alive. Each time we ride and share good times with each other and perhaps encounter someone new on that ride, we help to “add a little cement” to this uniqueness that is ours.
Next time you are on a ride or at one of our meetings or events, take just a moment to welcome those who are guests or new to our chapter family. You just never know where that might lead, and many an interesting friendship has sprung from just such a chance meeting.
Are you livin’ the life? The last 50,000 miles I’ve ridden have been great, but it is the next 50,000 that really get me excited!!
SOUTHERN HIGHROADS TRAIL RIDE DATE SET
The 4th annual Southern Highroads Trail Ride is set for the weekend of August 20-22. We will run the same route we did last year which proved out to be the way to run this ride for maximal viewing of the waterfalls along the way.
Accommodations will be set up for our first night in Franklin, NC, and this year I will try something other than the Microtel Inn, which has proven itself to be problematic. For our second night, we will again stay at the Nantahala Village Inn, which will also host our dinner. This will likely be a somewhat restricted choice menu at a fixed price which will make things easiest on us and them. They did a great job last year and were very glad to have us.
While the exact number of rooms is being worked on, I am going to limit the size of the ride this year. Last year’s ride (about 35 bikes) is as big as this ride safely needs to be and is also about as big as local logistics (the number of rooms we’re given and restaurant availability) can handle.
So…I will be posting a sign up sheet down at the shop for this ride; the date of posting will be sometime Friday, June 11th, so start thinking now about your plans. Once the sign up sheet is full I will contact you with hotel information so you can make your reservations. Reservations will have to be made by July 20th; on July 21st, any unreserved rooms will be released. Please note that when the sheet gets posted, several spaces will have already been reserved for the Road Captains assisting with the ride.
Finally please note that this is a “5 pig” ride. The ride is long, totaling about 700 miles and packed with curves. This area of NC, TN, and GA is mountainous and was selected to provide a beautiful, exhilarating ride. You should be an accomplished curve rider to go on this ride.
“MADE IN AMERICA” TOUR STARTS OCTOBER 8, 2004
Have any of you caught the “Made in America” series on the Travel Channel on Tuesday nights? Yeah it’s the one hosted by our old buddy from Cheers, Cliff Claven, the mailman. It is pretty interesting stuff and I thought, wow, this would make for some great riding to see some neat things.
So why are we talking about this now??? Well certain things take advance reservations and I mean way in advance. When John Ratzenberger (Cliff) visited the Jack Daniel’s distillery, he had lunch following that at the famous Mary Bobo’s Boarding House. In checking this out, their website says it is about six months out for reservations.
On October 8-9th we will have an overnight chapter ride to tour the Jack Daniel’s Distillery in Lynchburg, TN. Following the tour on Oct 9th, Mary Bobo’s Boarding House has room for 12 of us (that was the best I could do today, April 7th---see what I mean?) for the 1:00 P.M. sitting for lunch. Lunch is $15.00 per head and a 50% deposit will be due 90 days in advance or by July 9th, so those who are interested need to start thinking now about their plans. There are other places to eat right there in town but I will go ahead with a sign up sheet for this ride also on June 11th. THE SIGN UP SHEET IS ONLY FOR THE MARY BOBO BOARDING HOUSE MEAL. Hotel details will follow in later issues of the HOGWASH so look for those. Lynchburg is a neatsmall town and everyone will enjoy this ride and looking at the HD factory custom Jack Daniel’s Heritage Softail which is on display at Lynchburg Hardware in addition to a fun tour of the distillery.
Other stops for my “Made in America” tours are planned for 2005 and include a long, multi day ride that will incorporate visits to the Chevrolet Corvette assembly plant in Bowling Green, KY and then on to the Louisville Slugger baseball bat plant in Louisville, KY as part of that same ride. Other ideas include a long ride to Memphis and a tour of the Gibson guitar factory, along with a night on Beale Street to hear some great blues music.

SHARE HOUSE - EASTER BASKETS
Thanks to everyone who stepped up to ensure that the 30 children at SHARE HOUSE had Easter Baskets on Easter morning. Many brought in items, others made monetary donations, as a Chapter WE made it happen. Special thanks to Nancy and John Bjerre, for doing all of the shopping. MDA RIDE
This year the MDA ride is being held on Sunday, May 23, 2004. I will be leading a ride from the dealership to Lakewood. We will meet at 8:00 and leave at 8:30. We have invited other local chapters to join us.
The official ride will leave and return to Lakewood. The cost is $40.00 per rider and includes lunch (catered by Moe’s) and a ticket into Country Fair (performances by Wynonna, Charlie Daniel’s Band and Buddy Jewell).
MDA is the charity that is sponsored nationally by Harley-Davidson. Last year the Atlanta Harley Owners Group had six bikes representing our Chapter for this ride. How embarrassing!
I am issuing a challenge to all of our members to join me on this ride. I will have registration packets available at the meeting. I am asking for you to donate $40.00 (which is tax deductible) and show up for the ride. If you can collect sponsorship money that is a bonus.
In October of last year I issued a similar challenge for the March of Dimes ride. You did it. We had close to 100 bikes representing our Chapter. I remember pulling in the parking lot at Lakewood and the volunteer asking what Chapter we were from. I PROUDLY said ATLANTA HARLEY OWNERS GROUP.
Let’s do it again!

H.O.G. AROUND THE SHOP
All sorts of things are going on at Harley-Davidson Atlanta. A swap meet was held the first weekend of April. What a turn out! There must have been 1500 people here during the day. Lots of vendors selling lots of “stuff”, a blessing of the bikes, a stunt team on Buell Firebolts the day was quite a success. The shop promises to make this a twice a year event, so the next one will be sometime in the fall. Watch for announcements.
The Raffle. July 31st is the day. This is a Saturday, so we will be having a dinner party, lots of activities, and a drawing for the 2004 Fat Boy. If you have been waiting for a date to be announced to get your ticket, it is time to step up and get one for yourself, and sell some to your friends. Let’s get all 400 sold by the first of July so we can really start planning for the party.
May 15th we are sponsoring an employee appreciation day by serving everyone at the dealership breakfast. We will be getting the food delivered here, but we need volunteers to serve. Breakfast will start at 7:30 A.M., and should be finished by 9:00 A.M.. Let’s get lots of people here to help, and show how much we as a chapter appreciate everything the dealership does to make our Harley experience a pleasant one.
I know of a couple members that have relatives serving on active duty in the military. We would like to get a better idea of whom these people are, where they are and what they are doing. Our plan is to make a presentation at an upcoming meeting with pictures. I would like anyone with a close relative serving on active duty to send me a picture. A close relative does not include your ex brother – in – law’s 4th cousin twice removed. Sons’ daughter’s nieces, nephews, brothers, sisters etc. are the people we are looking for. Please include your name, your relationship to the soldier, his/her rank, unit, and where they are stationed. A digital picture emailed to me is ideal, but you can just send a photo and I will get it scanned into a computer. TECH TIP
Hello again from Harley-Davidson of Atlanta, Inc. service department. Many of you are getting spring fever, or a pollen headache, for the riding season here in the south. Some of you are removing your motorcycle from storage to ride in the breeze once again. This is not as simple as cranking and riding, unless you have maintained a charge on your battery and fresh fuel and spark plugs in your motorcycle.
First off, check your battery to ensure that it is in a 100% fully charged condition. Check the surface charge of the battery for a reading of at least 12.6V with the use of a voltmeter. If the reading is below 12.6V, charge the battery and recheck the voltage after one to two hours. Never charge a battery without first reviewing the instructions for the charger being used.
Next, remove and inspect your spark plugs. Replace them if necessary. They should be a tan to golden brown in color. Check your air cleaner element. If you have a stock air cleaner element, you may need to replace it if it appears dirty. If you have a K&N high flow air cleaner element, clean it with K&N air cleaner and re-oil with K&N air cleaner oil.
Check your lubricant levels according to your factory owner or service manual. Also, check your controls for proper operation. Operate the front and rear brakes, throttle, clutch and shifter. Make sure your steering is smooth by turning the handlebars through the full operating range.
Make sure your air pressure is correct according to your factory service manual. Incorrect pressure will result in poor riding characteristics and can affect handling and stability or abnormal tread wear. Check the electrical equipment and switches including the stop lamp, turn signals, and horn for proper operation. Also, check for any fuel, oil or brake fluid leaks.
Finally, turn the engine over a few times to be sure there is no oil in the crankcase and that all oil has been pumped back into the oil tank. Stop the engine and recheck the oil level. Failure to do so may result in equipment damage.
Now that you have all of these technical inspections out of the way, get out there and enjoy the nice weather once again. Please contact an authorized dealer for any and all concerns you may have with your motorcycle and let the experts get you back on the road safely and quickly. Remember, you are only as safe as you make your motorcycle while out on the road riding. East Meets West Ride
April 25, 2004
We will leave Harley-Davidson of Atlanta at 10:45 A.M. and proceed to ESPNZone via a police escorted ride. The event will be for both bikes and cool cars, with a bike show, car show and fashion show to be held at the ESPNZone. The Talladega NASCAR race will be on the big screen. There will be a band playing. There will be a preview of the Dream Weaver Chopper, which is a new line coming to the Atlanta Area for its debut. A complete day of fun, with Harley-Davidson of Atlanta as one of the sponsors.

WATSON MILL COVERED BRIDGE RIDE May 1, 2004
My name is Windy Hawkins. I have been riding with H.O.G. Group for two years. This year I am working toward becoming a road captain. I am leading a ride to Watson Mill Covered Bridge. This is a long ride from the dealership, but, it will be a pleasant and easy ride, once we get out of cities, a lot back roads. Lunch will be at Silver Screen Grill. At the park, there is a $2 parking fee. It might be wise to bring cash on this trip. We will be in small towns and for lunch and for gas. This will be a 3 pig ride.

RIDE TO BARBER’S VINTAGE MOTORSPORTS MUSEUMMay 22, 2004
Cars and motorcycles in a new 141,000 sq. ft building with a 72 seat multimedia theater. The collection contains 61 Harleys and 450 other motorcycles. The entrance fee is $10, if you need more information check them out at www.barbermuseum.org. We will meet at 9:00 a.m. and leave at 9:30 a.m. for the ride down back roads to the museum. This will be a 4 Pig ride due to the length (280miles). If you return by the interstate, it would be a 5 Pig ride. Looking forward to this all day ride.

HELEN OVERNIGHT TRIP JUNE 26-27, 2004
We will meet at HDA at 8:30 a.m. and leave at 9:00 a.m.. Lunch stop will be at Hans in Helen around 12:30 -1:00 p.m.. The hotel will be the Hampton Inn. Twenty rooms have been blocked. Rates will be $75.00 for a standard room and $90.00 will get you a room with a view. Cut off date for a room is May 26. Call the hotel, 1-706-878-3310 and tell them that you are with HDA H.O.G. Chapter to get these rates. Dinner will be at Paul's Steak House, I was told that if we want to get in together as a group that we need to be there at 5:00 p.m. as they DO NOT take reservations. This will be a great ride, hope to see you there, until then ride safe!

DESOTO FALLS STATE PARK RIDE May 30, 2004
This is about 265 miles round trip. We'll meet at 9:00 a.m. at HDA and leave at 9:30 a.m. We should get there about 12:30 p.m. (our time) with two or three rest stops on the way. We'll eat at the park lodge restaurant (?), which has a buffet which is very good? They serve four different meats and I think six different vegetables plus the salad bar and two desserts. The cost for two is $20.90 (plus drinks). After lunch one of the attractions is the Little River Canyon, which is very picturesque, with several twisties for those who might be interested. It's not the Dragon's Tail by any means but the turns are there and tight with some having loose gravel...so beware! This is a very nice easy ride but, it takes the best part of a day, and with the Little River Canyon twisties, I'll give it 4 piggies.
