1999 ATLANTA HOG CHAPTER NOMINATIONS

Although the hot weather is still upon us, it is getting near to the time of year that we start our 1999 Chapter planning. Yes, it is nomination time for 1999 officers for the Chapter. That sheet on the front, that you just flipped over to get to this column, (see September HOGWASH) is the nomination sheet. Tear it off and think about who would do the best job in each of the officers positions. After 3 years in the Director spot, I am officially stepping down and urge you to look around the Chapter and choose your nominations carefully. Some of the things to look for are how involved the person is in Chapter activities and rides? How much of a leader is the nominee? Does the person have the best interests of the Atlanta Chapter at heart? And, how respected is this person? Remember to place your nominations in the box at Rene's desk no later than noon on October 1, 1998. The election will be held at the October meeting.

Atlanta H.O.G. Safety

"Transition"
by Mendel Stafford

Where has the summer gone? It seems as if we were just in Milwaukee a few weeks ago enjoying the beginning of summer. Now we are dodging school buses and dusting off the cool weather gear. We now are entering a different riding season. As I have written before, I believe the southeast and particularly Georgia, has the best motorcycle riding in the whole country. We can ride year round. However, we need to be reminded of the potential problems during the transition from one season to the next. Particularly during this time of year we could go from heavy gloves and full leathers in the early morning to "T" shirts in the afternoon and back to leathers and heavy gloves in the evening. Be aware that the change in our riding attire can change our feeling of the motorcycle, our sense of hearing and reaction time. Realize that these factors will and do effect your riding safety. We also tend to be extremely confident about our riding ability at this time of the year because we have been out there riding a lot. The more we ride and gain experience, the more we have a tendency to get over confidant and forget our basics of safety. This article is a simple reminder that we all need to slow down and think about the many things that may effect or riding during this transition of seasons. Our goal as motorcycle rider is to go home after our ride (safely). Keep this goal in mind every time you push that starter button.

Remember, If you are not safe, No One is!!!

Congratulations to all those who have taken a Safety Foundation Riders Course.

LADIES OF HARLEY

Ladies of Harley Report

I am sorry I have not had a column the last couple of months. We have been busy, just like everyone.

Christmas in July with Christian City Children's Home was wonderful. We had 13 people on the ride and a Van full of items for the kids. We were able to visit one of the cottages and spend some time talking to the kids and the house parents. It was such a blessing for us, as well as Christian City. We then traveled south to Sharpsburg for CATFISH, Yum Yum! The day was a fantastic success. Thank you to everyone who contributed and/or joined us on the ride. We couldn't have asked for a better day.

Weather was great...
Route was great...
Sharing of gifts and ourselves was great...
Company was great...
And last but not least Food was great.

August 1 we had the 5th Annual Ride to Macon for the baseball game between Macon Braves and Augusta Jackets. We had a good group to leave from the BP station at exit 69 on a beautiful ride down the back roads and through the Piedmont Wild Life Preserve to Julliette, Ga. We stopped for a wonderful lunch at the Whistle Stop Café and had those famous Green Fried Tomatoes. Some of the group also enjoyed some browsing in the various shops in the little town. We had a few more folks join us in Julliette. Then a couple from Macon Chapter led us down and around Macon. We saw some of the beautiful homes of Macon, the Almond Brothers recording studio, and areas they frequented along with their grave site. It was very interesting. We had another couple catch up with us in Macon for the game. That evening we joined the other Macon chapter members and went to the ball game. The Braves rallied to win 11 to 6 against the Augusta Jackets. It was a great' Some of us spent the night at the Quality Inn and had a leisurely ride on the back roads returning home.

August 15 and 22 we plan to stuff rally bags at the shop. Then August 27-29 "ON TO THE STATE RALLY". Most us will be staying at the Clarion. Rene has planned a Special Dinner Ride on Thursday night for the Atlanta Chapter. I hope everyone can join in.

Please remember when we have a ride you can join us at any point along the way, if you cannot leave at the same time as the main group, so come on and have fun with us as soon as you can.

We have canceled the ride to Cartersville for Sept 7. We will let you know what we plan in its place.

Be sure to watch the MDA telethon on Labor Day. Harley raised $1.5m for MDA. You will -.see-- your- contributions from the National Rally and 95th Anniversary and maybe some of our members. Paul Gardner will be there early so watch for him working the telethon and maybe some others if they can.

We having Fun and Hope you are.
Ride safe and have fun,
Ladies of Harley Officer,
Ginger Gardiner
