Christian City Children's Home Ride

Yes, after five years we made the pilgrimage back home to Milwaukee. Where 95 years ago several relatives gathered in a small shack and started what after 95 years has become the most popular motorcycle company of all time. Yes, we traveled through the sun, rain, wind and hail to join with our brothers and sisters for an anniversary and a birthday party that surpassed everything we expected. Five years ago, I came back from the 10th anniversary of H.O.G. and the 90th Birthday party of Harley-Davidson with stories of the celebrations and events that dwarfed any Bike Week in Daytona. I have retold the stories over the past five years to where a bunch of new people went for the 15th and 95th just to see how true the stories were. Guess what? The found out and now the number of our "messengers" has grown! For the next 5 years there will be many more of us to tell the stories of the joyful celebrations and festivities. Ask any of our members who went for the first time if it met their expectations and I am confident they will tell you it far surpassed their wildest dreams! The parade on Saturday morning was, accordingly to Allan Farmer,"worth the whole trip just by itself and the "sea" of Harley's in the parking lot was breathtaking". As before, the hospitality extended by the people of Milwaukee was never-ending throughout our stay. For all of you who did not make it, the only thing I can tell you is...YOU HAD TO BE THERE!! Oh, and we have a commemorative pin for any of our Atlanta Chapter members who show Rene a ticket stub from the 15th or the 95th celebration. Just see Rene at the shop.

2nd ANNUAL DALE MOOREFIELD RIDE

Elsewhere in this newsletter is the announcement for this ride. This is the one ride you can not miss this year. Dale always enjoyed the pit cooked Barbecue, Brunswick Stew, scenery and the folksy feel of the small east Georgia cotton gin town. So come out Saturday morning for a back roads ride through the country, going and coming, and the best B-B-Q and stew you ever put in your mouth. Dale will surely be there in the hearts of many of us.

MACON BRAVES RIDE

Saturday, August 1st will be our Ladies of Harley ride to Macon Braves ball game. They play in an old-time ballpark and just love to play the game. Our Ladies of Harley Office, Ginger Gardiner, is overseeing this ride.

"Passsenger Does Not Mean Passive
by Mendel Stafford

This month's article comes from a suggestion by Bruce Montgomery. Bruce suggested writing about the passenger. What are some helpful hints for the motorcycle passenger? I went out on the web and searched for anything I might be able to find that has been written for the passenger. To my somewhat of a surprise, I found very little. However, let's look at some very basic and logical functions a passenger should do. Being a passenger on a motorcycle is not just being passive. While we all ride for the pure enjoyment, a rider (driver) carries a tremendous responsibility. Being a passenger is also a big responsibility. Let's start from the very beginning. The passenger should never mount the bike until the rider is ready and has given the OK for the passenger to get on the bike. The passenger should mount the bike from the left side (jiffy stand side). Place their left foot on the passenger peg and stand straight up and gently swing their right leg up, over and around the bike (kinda like getting on a horse). Dismounting should be just the reverse. Stands up on both passenger pegs then swing the right leg up and back over the back fender. This is all done with the rider (driver) on the bike with it steady and has given you the signal to mount or dismount the bike. You need to modify this method on a bike with a tour pack on the back. You just cannot get your leg over that big tour pack. However you can modify this technique. Start the same way with your left foot on the left passenger peg but rather that swing your leg over the back of the bike, you face the bike from the side and step your right leg straight across the back seat. Now that you are on the bike and are on your way you are not finished. While the rider wants you to sit back relax and have fun you still have a responsibility. Keep you eyes monitoring the roadway of any type of hazard, from dead animals to tree limbs. Do not expect your rider to see everything. Cars approaching from a side street or an animal running toward the bike from a yard. Now some of you may say, I am not going to say anything to the rider because they will bite my head off for telling them how to drive." Well it is your life to and you have a right to help save both of you. Talk to you rider before you ride and make sure you both understand that you want to help and get the rules straight on what is expected of both of you. The passenger should also be familiar with the hand signals for riding in a group and pass these along as the ride leader displays them. The passenger does this even if the rider does or does not give the hand signals.

Remember, if you are not safe
................. No One Is!!!

CALL FOR VOLUNTEERS!

As the time grows nearer to the 1998 Georgia State H.O.G. Rally, we are asking for all of you to pitch in and help out this year! We have always counted on the volunteers from all of the Chapters around the state to help make every Rally a success. Remember that volunteering at the Rally gives each of you the opportunity to get to know more of your fellow H. 0. G. members! This 'year, in order to "inspire" more of you to help out, we are implementing an incentive to get you involved! Every Assistant Director of every Georgia H.O.G. Chapter has been given volunteer sign-up sheets to post in you H.O.G. information area. These sign-up sheets are set up in two-hour blocks of time. for every two-hour block of time that you sign up for and work, we will be handing out a Volunteer Door Prize Ticket. At the Saturday night closing party, there will be a Volunteer Door Prize drawing for three door prizes. The top winner will be given a gift certificate for $250.00, good at any of the Georgia Harley-Davidson dealers (at this writing there was only one dealer who had not yet responded to our request to honor the gift certificate). The other tickets drawn will given door prizes similar to those handed out for other Rally Attendees. All volunteers are given a Certificate of Appreciation (suitable for framing). We're looking forward to seeing your name on the list and getting to know you this year!
