From The Desk Of:
ROBERT MARTIN DIRECTOR
ALARMTEK AUTO ALARM

Ok, I know this may not
be popular, but I need to vent.
I am now banning sales in all of my web stores, all products made by French, German & Chinese manufacturers until further notice.

It is not my intent to support anyone country over another. No to the contrary, I choose to support USA friendly trading partners only at this time.

I have many requests for AVITAL and CLIFFORD reviews, and I am now uninterested in wasting time with the manufacturers of this equipment. Don't buy them Plain and simple.

The review to the right was on last years equipment, and it still stands today.

This of course is a personal choice, but so be it. You of course may have a different opinion, as is your right. I however, will NOT forget who our friends are!

A MESSAGE FOR OUR READERS

We've Had To Re-Arrange Some Things!

Here's the thing, I just don't have the personel to keep up with our "FREE wiring diagrams for all" service that we have been supplying for the past 7 years. To date, we have GIVEN AWAY our Custom Vehicle Wiring Color & Location Charts 1 for free to all who have asked, but as of 11/08/2000 we have stopped the free service for all but our Customers who buy our equipment or Unlimited TECH services. I really fought against it, but unfortunately with over 300 requests flooding our desks, we just can't do it anymore.
(There's just so many hours in a day!)
If you still want to get them, they are available at,
Alarmtek's WIREWERX!
For only 3.99 each.
We know some of you won't want to pay for them, but after 53,895 free diagrams sent out for nothing over the last few years, we feel that our time will be better spent on providing the best quality of service possible to our customers. Thanks for your time.

Sorry But To
All Those Who Have Asked
I No Longer Work For
Commando Car Alarms
Tech support Office

Due to a business slow down in the industry, my services to GNU Industries were terminated. But I'll Live. I still sell some of they're products on my site, and still work with them on occasion.

A New Line Makes All
The Difference!"

This Year's Commando Car Alarms Is much more refined since the last few year's models. The changes from the old manufacturer to the new one has really paid of in reliability and overall performance. I particularly like the new 560s combo alarm/keyless entry and remote starter systems. It provides a 1000 ft range and solid feel remotes, along with a nice list of standard and desired end user features. While I am no longer in the employ of GNU industries, I will say that this is a fine company to deal with, and you can count on good service and a propmt responce for technical assistance if needed. I wish them all the best and a sucessfull new year.
Go visit them at

"ONLINE" Car Alarm Installation Assistance From,

AUTO SECURITY &
Convenience Services

From The Technicians Who Install Them!

A comment from the desk of Robert Martin, Director
ALARMTEK AUTO ALARM

"Ok, You keep asking about Self Contained Alarms So...."
Just a few comments on the "self conatained" type of car alarm systems some of you are installing into your vehicles.
This is what I like about them.____________
That being said, I still can't see why you would bother with them. Some feel that they are a deterent, but as you know by now, when a car siren goes off, you don't even look twice. Since most, if not all of these systems are installed totally under the hood of the vehicle, all you'll have here is a noise generator. They all come with outputs for starter kill, but it does require a relay on the output, and some cutting to do it right. Most first time installers just power the system, relying on the internal shock sensor, and current sensor, to detect battery drain to trigger the alarm. Since we know most people ignore the sirens, and a thief can disable it in less time than it takes to say "why did I install this piece of X@$%^$! in the first place?", I suggest an underdash unit everytime. It takes a bit more time and effort, but worth it. You also have many more convenience features, as well as add on sensor options with an underdash unit, then the self contained types.
ALARMTEK ONLINE, will supply you with the proper method to install it, and provide the correct wire colors and locations in your vehicle, so you can do it yourself! The only reason you have now for installing one of these "noise makers" is your looking to save money......
but are you? Think about it.
Come on! You put alot of money into you car or truck,
a few extra bucks to truely protect it is not unreasonable!

On the subject of:
"How Do You Like The Products From....?"

Some alarms are great, some are'nt, but most do the same things, (ie; keyless entry, starter disable, siren etc....) It's what "behind" the product that should be considered when shopping for vehicle security. Here are some handy guidelines that might help you on the way to your purchase.
First, ask all the questions you want! This is important and it will seperate the good from the bad. If the "End User" support from the maufacturer is good, and available when needed, this above all is important. Avoid fly by nighters, Ebay liquidators, or Manufacturers who deal with "DEALER ONLY" networks, who ignore your technical assistance requests simply because you are not "authorized" to receive information for the product you had installed in your vehicle. VERY FRUSTRATING!
Next, determine what you want BEFORE you enter into a discussion with the salesman, You could get taken real good if you are'nt certain. (by the time it's all said and done, you will have an expensive, bloated system installed when in fact you should have done better with less.
And finally, whatever the cost projections you have for the "perfect" system to protect your vehicle, Make damn sure that the system you buy is clear and understandable, does what you intended it to do, and of course that the installer is a qualified technician, skilled at installing the equipment you bought.
"But What Do You Think Of The Equipment?"
Of course the equipment is important, but it's useless if you are not actually protecting the vehicle the way you want to. Don't skimp, but don't overdo it either. Go into this one with your eyes wide open and do your research. It's supposed to protect you, not confuse the hell out of you!
Sure you could add this device, or that, save a couple of bucks on an off brand, or even save some bucks doing it yourself, but know your limitations. If you do not feel comfortable dealing with all of the wires and delicate work, hire a professional, It will pay in the end!

FYI FROM ALARMTEK!
Through our grapevine, we've come to find out that DEI (Directed Electronics) has seemed to have aquired CLIFFORD/AVITAL. This (I hope) will solve some of the Tech support problems for the end user of Clifford products specifically. We have been getting a tremendous amount of callers, trying to get the installation manuals, but we don't supply them here. Unfortunately the problem is that we can't really suggest anyone, including Clifford directly. If you are a Clifford dealer and would care to volunteer to field these calls, take them, as we will not deal with GERMAN or FRENCH equipment resellers here. Ultimately, if DEI can workout the bugs with the tech support system, and examine who they are actually doing business with, I'd really like to see them pick up the ball, and help to provide an outlet for all of the people out here who need it! Even if they have to go through the ridiculous "DEALER ONLY" system, at least there will be someone who can help with Clifford's older products. The Best suggestion to those of you out there that insist on installing Clifford's and Avital's from now on, KEEP THE INSTALL MANUAL! You may find it almost impossible later to get info on it, if you loose it.

PRODUCT REVIEWS BY ROBERT MARTIN (ALARMTEK)
The 2003 Line of
Auto Security Products From: Magnadyne

Nice stuff this year. The Carbine & Marksman lines have been greatly improved for 2003. The M series alarms and remotestarters have made a nice showing here at our shop. Nice design and user manuals.

One of the things I don't care for accross this new line of alarms is that they are not putting out the best range I've ever seen, but not bad either. Just not the "best".

The remotes are solid OEM style, easy to understand and well laid out. All though made "offshore", I like them for the "backyard" installer trying to save the big install fee's, by doing it yourself. You will find these systems sold under many re-seller names like Marksman, Commando Alarms & Delta. All are selling the identicle systems. Most are offering support services for them as well. This is good since getting aftersale support is normally difficult at best.

All in all, a good product line this year, Not too creative or unique, but nice. I've seen alot worse! This one is great for Honda Accords and Civics.
Average Install Time: Under 2 hours!

IT WENT INTO A 2002 FORD F 150 SUPER DUTY PICK UP , AND IS WORKING AS TOUTED! GREAT WORK GUYS! WE JUST LOVE THE WAY THIS THING WORKS! STAY IN TOUCH AND LET US KNOW WHAT ELSE YOU COME UP WITH! MOST IMPRESSIVE. I REALLY LIKE THE RANGE AND THE REMOTES ON THIS ONE. THE BUILT IN SECOND STARTER WIRE AND DRIVERS DOOR PRIORITY LOCKING OUTPUTS SHOWS YOU ACTUALLY LISTEN TO YOUR CUSTOMERS REQUESTS.
4.5 STARS FOR THIS SYSTEM. (.5 OFF FOR NO LCD PAGING SYSTEM YET! STILL WAITING FOR YOUR SLANT ON IT.)
OVER ALL, A BEST BET IN MY BOOK FOR THE BACKYARD INSTALLER.

Question: What do you think about the Excalibur Alarms?

REVIEWS BY: Robert Martin at INSTALLSUPPORT@AOL.COM
I can't say alot of kind things about Excalibur's. After checking out this years crop from OMEGA, I still don't like the remotes. They feel flimsy, and the overall range is not impressive. The LED/Valet combo device is also not to my liking. You have to take it apart to really place them for the utmost effectiveness. On the up side, I will say that the ATV code verification system is a nice idea, I just would like to see a more reliable, and end user friendly system from OMEGA. A suggestion to those who are having trouble understanding the alarm, Corner your installer, and make him or her fully explain what your system does. Technical support for the end user at OMEGA in Georgia, is NON EXISTANT! So you need to make sure you fully understand the alarm before you leave the installers shop.

Protected By MICRO "Stand Back"/ Why Pay for DEI's Markup?

Presented by JP Audio & Security

Since the early 90s we have heard Viper this, Viper that on the street, but in the car security world, it's more like DEI or DIE...(DEI being the abbreviated name for Viper's manufacturer Directed Electronics). But why?

Being a private alarm installer when people ask me do I have Viper it almost sickens me, I mean I'm tired of hearing that. No I don't carry their stuff is my reply...But why is everyone so brainwashed into thinking the word alarm is synonymous with Viper? It's because of marketing, you gotta hand it to DEI, they put their product all over the place at the right time and pretty much dubbed anything dealing with car security their invention, not to say they are not innovators, but surely everything did not originate with them...Take a look at the company that DEI buys their circuit boards for their Viper brain modules, a little company called Micro who has been in this game for ages as well, but do they get the credit? NO!

Granted, if you walk into a shop and buy a Viper installed, you get a lifetime warranty from DEI and no matter what, that shop has to fix your alarm in the event of malfunction, but what if you're not buying it at a shop, what if you want to use that thing we call the Internet to purchase your alarm and install it yourself?

To me, blatantly and blindly going for only DEI products on the web is a waste of your hard earned money since if you're not an authorized dealer like say, the local Best Buy, then you SOL for the warranty, so where does that leave the actual Viper product (brain, remotes, wiring etc...) in it's separation apart from the rest? Nowhere is the answer, you can buy a product for about half the price on the web as a Viper and get friendlier, easier to understand installation instructions, different looking products, newer and fresher designs and you're not getting a shop warranty anyway so why pay double...oh and try contacting DEI for tech support and you're not a dealer, good luck! However, on the web, you get fast friendly advice on the spot, some websites even do step by step with you on installation, try getting that from DEI.

Take a look at the Micro CS2003 remote start/alarm system and take a look at the Viper 550ESP, both remote start your vehicle, both offer keyless entry, a number of aux outputs, hood and trunk protection, (2) 4-button remotes, starter kill output, parking lights flash, the list goes on and on, they are pretty much dead on par with each other, only thing is, you can pay $99.95 + shipping for a CS2003 and about $399 + parts installed at a Viper dealer or about $350 + shipping on EBay for the Viper 550, hmmm, now which do I want? What people are getting themselves into here is the name of the product, it's like buying aspirin, why buy Tylenol for $6 a bottle when u can buy the Wal-Mart brand with all the same active ingredients in it (not to mention clears up your headache) for $3 less? Some people do, I don't...I mean consider this, both alarms are installed by the same installer and of the same quality of install, is your car going to be any more well protected if you have the word Viper on your remote than if you have the word Micro? No, the vehicle will still flash and blare a siren if the window is smashed and door opened, they will both have a starter kill relay immobilize the car and so on....Point is, at this stage in the alarm game, pretty much all of the stuff is at about the same level and depending on quality (I mean don't go on eBay and see an alarm with 2-way pager for $30 and think it's the same as the high end Vipers or Audiovox Prestige units, be for real), you're getting the same thing, so why pay twice as much?

Speaking of 2-way Paging alarms, let's take a gander at them...Viper 791XV vs. Prestige APS-996, both have an LCD transmitter pager, both have an extra 4-button remote, both have all of the same stuff, I can get a Prestige APS-996 for about the half the price installed as a Viper 791XV, why? I'll tell you why, because one says Viper on it and one say Prestige...and nobody in the alarm business can tell you that Prestige sucks or isn't in Viper's class because that would be a lie. The information is out there to prove everything I am saying...Oh did I mention I can get an Ultrastart 4255TL with just about all the same features as both of those aforementioned alarms online for about $190 bucks? Oh, and the ultrastarter will do everything the Viper will do only do it from a lot further away, range baby, range.

Bottom line here folks is this, we can all stop the madness about the DEI line of alarms, they are good, but so is almost everybody else, and everybody else's prices are way cheaper, and if you take a little time to read and research your vehicle's wires and such, give yourself a little time to complete the install, you can pick exactly what you want, install it yourself and save yourself about $250 or more! Get it from a guy like Bob over at www.caralarmz.com he'll sell you any of the alarm's I've mentioned for a fraction of the price, hook you up with your vehicle's wiring chart for free with it and if you need tech help with installing the alarm he'll have an instant messaging session with you! Now let's see DEI do that!
