San Francisco/Bay Area Penafrancia celebration San Francisco/Bay Area Penafrancia celebration
by: Manny Alarcon

Under the leadership of Libon, USA, the host organization for the 1999 Peñafrancia festivity, devotees from the Bay Area honor Our Lady with the evening novena sponsored by local Bicol organizations. Rev. Thomas Duong Binh-Minh, the parish priest, and the parishioners of Our Lady of Good Counsel, have extended their warm welcome to the Bicolanos and other Marian devotees. The image of Our Lady of Peñafrancia is also enshrined in this church in San Leandro.

Sept. 10, 1999, marked the first day of the novena which traditionally is in the residence of Bessie Parafina, the care taker of the image. Subsequently, each organization takes turn hosting the novena with benediction until the 9th day which is held in the morning followed by a concelebrated mass. Following the mass is the foot procession to the marina for a short fluvial trek reminiscent of the practice in Naga City, Philippines, the Bicol origin of the practice. The celebration continues with a grand picnic where members and guests are treated to a sumptuous meal of different Bicol delicacies with a variety entertainment. Later in the afternoon, a mass is held for members and guests of this festivity.

The concelebrants, flanked on the left by Devotees' spiritual adviser, Fr. Ed Dura and on the right, Fr. Inciong Cambaling who came all the way from Canada.

Fr. Ed Dura, spiritual director of the Devotees of Our Lady Virgin of Peñafrancia, conveys this message:
My dear Peñafrancia Devotees:

May I welcome you all to the 1999 Peñafrancia Festivities. May God be glorified with your humility and faith to honor the Mother of God.

I need not mention it that this is the last Fiesta that we will have for this century. Of course, the fiesta of the next millennium is just another day or just another year. However, the year 2000 holds a significant meaning for us Christians and Catholics.

Pope John Paul II constantly has invited the whole christendom to prepare for the new millennium with a sense of urgency for renewal and prayer. A lot of people think of the big party 2000. And if you are thinking of reserving for it, the ticket has been long sold out. The secular mind has a different way of looking at the millennium. It sees it in terms of excitement and pleasure. We Christians hold it with a deep reference to our faith and salvation. It is an opportunity of holiness, forgiveness, renewal and reconciliation.

Let us invoke the intercession of the Virgin of Peñafrancia to help us to be faithful to the same posture that she did , “be it done to me according to your word.”

Yours in Mary, Our Ina

On October 2, 1999, the gala dinner/dance capping the entire affair under the overall management of Libon USA, will be held at the Crowne Plaza, Foster City.
