SOME OF MY BEST MEMORIES AS A CHILD WAS TRICK OR TREATING ON HALLOWEEN NIGHT.


In the 1950's and 60's in Ohio we lived in the country on a farm. And there were many miles between neighbors. Which meant our parents would take us in the car from farm to farm to go trick or treating. It had to be dark outside and scary.


We didn't go out and buy costumes back then. We had to create our own from Dad or Mom's old clothes and some make up, old jewelry, scarves, hats, ties and etc.


Maybe one year we would dress up as an old hobo, cowgirl, cowboy, farmer, housewife or a princess.

The best part was Mom or Dad would also dress up. Boy how we would laugh together as we got ready.


Our tradition was we would knock at the door and stand there with our little brown bag and have them guess who we were.

Mom would hush our giggles and we weren't suppose to talk. We could only shake our head yes or no to a question, because they might reconize our voices. It was so hard for us to keep from laughing. And if they couldn't guess who we were, we received a treat. What a great time we had!!!!!


Now because there were so few neighbors, I realized as I got older, they pretended not to know us so we would get our treat. We had no trick up our sleeve, but at the time I thought we really did a good job of fooling them, because no one knew who we were. Mom and Dad were great and played the game with us.....LOL


I must explain, some think Halloween is a pagan holiday, to us it was just a wonderful night of fun with our parents. It was not forbidden to us nor did our church frown on it. We all pulled together as a family and worked very hard most of the time and this night was rare to be able to actually play a game with our parents.


It is a shame that today our children can't have the simple pleasure we shared with our parents.

We didn't have to worry about drugs or needles in our treat, getting mugged or someone hurting us. It was just the wonderful joy of being young, innocent and getting a piece of candy, or a cup of hot sweet apple cider and having a nice visit with friends and neighbors.
