Show me the meaning of being lonely

So many words
For the broken heart
So hard to see
In a crimson love
So hard to breathe
Walk with me in the wind.

Night to light
So soon becomes
Wild and free
I can feel the sun
Your every wish
Will be done they tell me.

Show me the meaning of being lonely
Is this the feeling I need to walk with
Tell me why I can't be there where you are
There's something missing in my heart.

Chapter   Thirty-Four

Two days later....

The phone rang and VJ jumped to get it.

"Hello? Alisha?" she said, hopefully.

"I'm sorry, VJ, it's Brandon," said a male voice.

"Brandon Wilkins?" asked VJ, surprised.

"The one and only," he answered. "How've you been?"

"Truthfully? My life has been hell the past couple of days." VJ sat down on the couch.

"What happened?" Brandon asked, concerned.

"You remember my cousin, Alisha Walker?"

"Yeah. Your 'twin'."

"Well, you haven't by any chance talked to her, have you?"

"No. Why?"

That single word drained VJ of all hope. "Alisha took off and I can't find her."

"When? What's been going on while I've been gone?"

"A lot has happened since I last saw you, but most recently, Alisha had a miscarriage. I went to go pick her up at the hospital two days ago, but she had already left. She told me the day before she wanted to move in with her sister, Danielle. So, I called her, but Danielle said she hadn't talked to Alisha in over a month. Now I'm really worried and I can't find her anywhere."

"That's awful," Brandon said, sympathetically. "Is there anything I can do to help?"

"If she calls you, please let me know right away."

"No problem. So Alisha had a miscarriage, huh? How old is she? Eighteen?"

"Going to be. In January."

"What happened to the father?"

"He's in another country right now. He's in a musical group called the 'Backstreet Boys' and they just released their first album overseas. My boyfriend's in the same group."

"Oh." Brandon had been hoping VJ wasn't seeing anyone. "Well, I just thought I'd give you a call. I'm in town for a couple weeks, so maybe I'll stop by."

"That's fine with me," said VJ, distractedly. "It was good talking to you, Brandon."

"You, too, VJ. I hope you find Alisha."

"So do I." VJ said 'bye', then hung up.

Come on, Alisha, where are you? thought VJ, worriedly.

"Nick, wake up," Brian said. "We're here."

Nick opened his eyes and saw Alisha's apartment building in front of him. He put the seat up in the rental car and got out. He and Brian headed up to the apartment. Brian knocked on the door and waited.

VJ hurried to the door and threw it open. She didn't bother to hide her disappointment when she saw it was Brian and Nick.

"Oh, it's you," she said. "So you finally decided to come out, huh, Nick? It took Ali going into the hospital to get you out here?!"

"Where is she?" said Nick. "I need to talk to her."

"I don't know!" VJ yelled. "She's gone and I don't know where she is!!"

"What happened, Angel?" Brian said.

"Alisha had a miscarriage," said VJ, looking at Nick angrily. "She was worrying that Nick didn't want to be with her anymore. So, I suggested we go for a walk. When we got back, Alisha started getting cramps in her stomach. By the time we got to the hospital, she was bleeding. I went to pick her up from the hospital a couple of days ago only to find she had left. She told me she was going to move in with her sister, Danielle. I called her and Danielle told me she didn't know anything about that. Now, she's nowhere to be found."

"Maybe she's staying with some other relative," Nick suggested. "She has to be around here somewhere."

"It would've gotten to whichever relative she was staying with that we couldn't find her, Nick," said VJ. "They would've called and told me she was with them."

"We'll find her," Brian said, putting his arms around VJ. "You can be sure of that."

VJ cried in his arms. Brian looked at Nick. He looked like he was about to pass out. This is one hell of a reality check, Brian thought as he watched Nick walk to Alisha's room. He walked inside and closed the door.

"Are you sure it's okay that I stay with you?" Alisha asked her friend, Alexis O'Conner.

"Yes, I'm positive," she reassured her. "You can stay with me and David as long as you want."

"Thank you so much," said Alisha, gratefully. "I don't know what I'd do if you weren't here."

"You don't have to thank me." Alexis gave Alisha a brief hug. "I couldn't turn you away to live in the streets of New York City. Especially, since you're four months pregnant."

Alisha patted her semi-round stomach. "Still, I appreciate this. It's just until I find a job and get a place of my own."

"I'll help you look around," Alexis told her. "Can I ask you a question?"

"Sure."

"What happened to the father?" Alexis saw this pained expression in her eyes. But it was gone in a matter of seconds, like she had just imagined it. "You don't have to answer if you don't want to."

"It doesn't matter who he is. It's just me and my baby."

"Well, you just traveled for hours on a bus, Anne. You need to rest. Come on. I'll show you to your room."

Alisha got up and followed Alexis to her new room. As soon as Alexis left her alone, Alisha walked over to the window and looked at Central Park, tears falling down her face.
