Chapter   Four

I never told Nick about my date with Kevin. I don't know why I didn't. But, of course, there was nothing I could do to hide it from him, not only because I lived with him now, but also because Kevin was one of his friends. There was no way he wasn't going to find out.

I guess Nick got a little worried when I didn't come back downstairs after having lunch with him. I had in a tape of music I had recorded off the radio, mostly Spanish, but there was a song by my favorite Latin artist, Enrique Iglesias, called "Bailamos", a Spanish-English crossover. I had the music up pretty loud, so I didn't hear Nick when he knocked.

I was dancing to the song. Something about the song always made me want to get up and dance, so I did. When I did a turn, I saw Nick standing in my doorway, this look of awe on his face. I stopped dancing and started laughing. Nick smiled.

"Have you seen 'Fools Rush In'?" he asked.

"Of course. I love that movie," I said. "Why do you ask?"

"When I saw you just now, dancing to this song, you reminded me of the part where that guy finds his wife dancing in the kitchen while making dinner and he stands there in complete awe of the way her body moves."

"Oh." I could once again feel myself blush. What is it about this guy that makes me blush so much, I thought to myself. I've never in my life blushed so much. "I guess when you like a song as much as I like that one, it just flows through you."

"I can understand that." Nick looked at me for a second, then looked around. "I like what you've done with the room."

"Thanks."

"Can I have a look?" His eyes returned to me.

"Sure."

He came in and started looking around. There were many things around me to remind me of Mexico, things from the many fiestas I'd gone to over there. I had a lot of pictures hanging on the wall, of my family and friends. Nick looked at them one by one, studying them. I watched him as he looked, studied him. There was something about him that attracted me to him. He was just different. And taken. I let out a sigh. Nick looked over at me and smiled.

"You didn't tell me you and your sister were twins," he said.

"It didn't seem important," I told him.

"My sister, Angel, and brother, Aaron, are twins."

"Really? How old are they?"

"They turn twelve in December. Who's older, you or your sister?"

"Me, by two minutes."

"Oh yeah. You said you were the second youngest. Don't I feel just stupid."

Then I remember he must've come up for something. "Did you come up here for a reason?"

"Oh, um, I wanted to see if you were alright. You didn't come back downstairs, so I got worried. What made you stay up here?"

"I came up to pick out something to wear to dinner, since I couldn't decided earlier."

"Ooohhh. A date. Who's the lucky guy?"

"Kevin Richardson." Nick's smiled faded a little. "He asked me to go out to dinner with him before he left and I said yes."

"Oh. That's pretty cool," Nick said. It sounded like he was a little disappointed. "Well, I'll leave you to get ready then. It's almost five-thirty."

Before I could say anything, he walked out of the room. How strange. One minute he's smiling, the next he has a look of doom. I shook my head. I don't have time to worry about Nick. I have a date to get ready for. For the next two hours, I got ready for dinner. I took me forever to blowdry my hair 'cause it was pretty long. I was putting the finishing touches on my hair when the doorbell rang. I sprayed a little bit of my favorite perfume on, grabbed a small purse, the key Nick had given me earlier to the house, a light jacket, and headed downstairs.

Kevin looked at me as I walked down the steps. He whistled in appreciation and smiled. He gave me a hug when I reached the bottom. I hugged him back, getting a whiff of his cologne. It smelled really good. Kevin stepped back and looked at me again.

"You look absolutely beautiful," he said.

"Thank you," I replied. "You look very handsome yourself."

"Thanks." Kevin reach for the table behind me and grabbed a bouquet of flowers. "These are for you, but they're not half as beautiful."

I thanked Kevin for them and went to find a vase to put them in. When I got back, Nick and Kevin were talking. They heard the sound of my heels and turned around. Nick's eyes widened and his mouth opened like he wanted to say something, but nothing came out. Kevin and I said goodnight to Nick and left.

Dinner was great. Kevin took me to an Italian restaurant. I'd never been to one before, so I didn't know what any of the food tasted like. The only thing I'd tasted was spagetti and that was it. Kevin ordered the same thing for the both of us. We talked about ourselves while we waited for our dinner to arrive. We both freaked out when we found out each other's age. Kevin thought I was older, while I thought he was younger. We laughed if off, but I think it stuck to the back of Kevin's mind. When I asked him what he did for a living, like Nick, I got the feeling he didn't want to talk about it, so I let it drop.

After dinner, we went dancing. Kevin's a great dancer. I don't consider myself a great dancer, but it seemed like Kevin was watching me dance than he himself was dancing. Our breaks were far and few, but that was okay with me. I loved to dance. We left after a few hours of that and took a walk through a park. It was very beautiful out, but a little cool and I'd left my jacket in his truck. Kevin saw me rubbing my arms to warm them up and took off his suit jacket and put it around my shoulders. We didn't say much during our walk. But that was okay with me. The silence was companionable.

By the time we got back to Nick's house, it was about midnight. Kevin walked me up to the door.

"I had a really great time," I told him. "Thanks for making my first day here memorable."

"No problem," said Kevin, smiling down at me. "I had a great time, too."

Kevin leaned down and kissed me gently on the lips. I felt these warm sensations flow through my body. We parted and looked at each other smiling. Kevin ran his fingers gently down the side of my face. I had to look away, not because I wanted to, but I had to look for my keys. When I found them, I opened the door. We said goodnight and Kevin kissed me on the cheek, then walked back to his truck. I walked quietly into the house and up the stairs to my room.

I changed into my night shirt and went back downstairs to the kitchen. I poured myself a glass of juice and started to enter the living room. I saw Nick and Samantha making out on the couch, and in my surprise, dropped my glass. The two of them separated and looked at me.

"I.. I'm sorry," I apologized quickly. "I didn't know anyone was in here."

Nick got off the couch and walked over to me. "Are you okay?"

"Yeah, I'm fine, but I broke one of your glasses." I looked down embarrassed.

"That's okay. Here, I'll clean it up." Nick kneeled down and started gathering up the big pieces.

"No, I'll clean it up," I said, kneeling in front of him.

We reached for the same piece at the same time and our fingers touched. I pulled mine back quickly. We looked at each other for two seconds, then I stood up. Nick finished picking up the glass and went into the kitchen with me. Samantha walked in not too far behind us.

"Nick, I have to go home. It's ten minutes past my curfew," she said.

"Hold on just a minute. I still have to mop up the...."

"She can do it," Samantha interrupted him. She turned to me. "You can do it, can't you?"

"Yes. Nick, take her home. I'll finish cleaning up."

"See? She said she'd finish. Come on let's go." Samantha grabbed Nick's hand and started pulling him towards the door.

He looked at me. "Are you sure?"

"Yes. Go. It's my mess anyway."

"Okay. I'll be back in a little while."

Nick and Samantha left and I finished cleaning up the rest of the mess I'd made. I sat up waiting for Nick for a while to make sure he got back okay, but he was gone so long, I decided to just go to bed. I heard the door open, looked at my clock and it said 2:00am. I heard Nick walk past my room and go into his, closing the door. I didn't wonder about what he'd been doing, I just went back to sleep.
