Chapter   Seven

"You and Samantha broke up?" I asked, unbelieving.

"Yeah. No warning or anything," Nick said. "She just broke up with me."

"Let's sit down," I said. We walked over to the couch and sat down. "Now, why would she want to do something like this to you?"

"She said she couldn't handle my being gone all the time. She hated that she never got to see me that much."

"But I don't understand. She went to visit you all the time, and if you were going somewhere in the States, she went with you. She saw you more than I did and I live in your house. How could she say that?"

"I don't know. But that's the reason she gave me. Samantha seemed fine with it when we started going out last year, then all of a sudden it's 'I never see you anymore'."

"How long have you two been together?"

"It would've been a year in November."

"That's a long time. When did you notice she started saying she never saw you anymore? Maybe it really has nothing to do with you."

Nick thought for a minute. "In February."

That's the month I moved in, I thought. "I don't know what to tell you. Just that it's her loss and she'll probably end up regretting it."

Nick smiled. "Thanks. Hearing you say that makes me feel a lot better."

"No problem," I said, smiling back.

"So, what about you?" Nick changed the subject. "What was Enrique doing here?"

"He stopped by to see me. I hope you don't mind."

"No, no. It's okay. You can have friends over if you want."

"Thanks. Enrique asked me to start dating him again."

Nick's smile faded a little. He looked the other way. "Oh, really? What did you say?"

"I told him I'd think about it. I don't know if I want to be with him again. If he'd come back any other time before, I probably would've said yes right away, but now I'm not sure."

He looked back at me. "Why?"

"Well, for one thing, he'd hardly ever be around, he'll always be somewhere on tour, or recording a new album, doing something that will take him somewhere else...." I noticed Nick started laughing. Then it hit me. "I sound just like Samantha."

"Yeah, you do. Only more sincere."

"I think it was different for me. She went to see you all the time. Enrique never asked me to go with him anywhere, and he barely even called me. I couldn't take it anymore. I didn't want to end up hating him, so I ended it."

"Let's not talk about this anymore," Nick said all of a sudden. "What were you listening to?"

"'Bailamos' by Enrique."

"Is it a new song?"

"Kind of. He released it back in May for the 'Wild, Wild West' movie soundtrack. He even got to be in Will Smith's video for the title track, 'Wild, Wild West'."

"I thought you never watched TV?"

"I don't. Enrique told me. I haven't seen the video."

"Oh. Can I listen?"

"Sure."

Nick got up and walked over to his sound system and pressed the play button. 'Bailamos' started blaring out over the speakers. He came back and sat down right next to me. We listened in silence. When the song ended, I was the first one to say something.

"I have the CD," I said. "We can listen to it without the static and we'll be able to hear the whole song."

"Tell me where it is and I'll go get it."

"No, that's okay. I'll go."

I jumped off the couch and went upstair to get the CD from my room. I came back down and put the CD in the player. I pushed the repeat button, then pressed play. We listened to the whole song, sitting next to each other on the couch. I stared straight ahead of me. I could feel Nick look at me. As if by a magnetic force, I turned to look at him. I looked in his eyes and got caught up in how blue they were. Nick reached up and touched my hair, which was rolled up into a bun. He took out the hair clip holding it in place and my hair came loose around me.

He ran his fingers through my hair. It started becoming hard to breath and my heart speeded up. I couldn't look at him anymore and looked down at my hands instead. Nick wouldn't let me do that. He cupped my chin with his other hand and brought my face up to his. His face was closer than I thought it would be. I closed my eyes and willed his lips to touch mine. When they did, I turned my head. Still, Nick didn't let that stop him.

He placed light kisses on my cheek and made his way to my lips. This time he kissed me more fully. I couldn't stop myself from kissing him back. I realized I'd wanted to kiss him so much, ever since I first met him. We kissed until we were both breathing hard. Nick pushed me back on the couch and laid on top of me. I was so lost in my desire for him, I didn't realize what was happening. Nick was kissing my neck and I ran my fingers through his hair. It was when he touched my breast did I get scared.

"Wait," I said, pushing him off me. "This isn't a good idea."

"What? What's wrong?" Nick looked at me, pleading for an answer.

"This doesn't seem right. I mean, both of us are feeling very confused right now. We could easily do something we might regret."

Nick ran his hand through his hair and looked around. "You're right. It wouldn't be a good idea to do this." He looked at me again. "I'm sorry if you thought I was pushing you. I didn't mean to make you feel pressured or anything."

"It's okay," I said. "We're both dealing with mixed emotions right now. It would only be natural to turn to each other for comfort, right?"

"Right."

I got up from the couch and got my CD. "I'm tired. I'm going to bed. See you in the morning?"

"Sure thing. Goodnight." Nick gave me a little grin.

"Goodnight." I leaned down and kissed him on the cheek, then headed upstairs to my room.

I didn't go to sleep right away. I kept thinking about what happened downstairs. By the time I finally went to sleep, the sun was getting ready to rise. Not during any time of the night did I hear Nick go to his room.
