Chapter   Six

"Mom, don't worry about me," Lynn said. "I know what I'm doing. I've been around babies my whole life."

"I know, dear," Lynn's mother said. "But I can't help it."

Lynn was at the airport with Emily and AJ to make sure her mother got on her flight back to Phoenix safely and on time. Everyone else had gone home a couple days after the party, but her mother stayed for a week to watch over Lynn.

"Mrs. Ortiz, me and AJ will be here to help Lynn whenever she needs it," Emily said. AJ gave Emily a 'why-did-you-say-that" look. "Right, AJ?"

"Well, actually...." Emily elbowed AJ in the side. "Yeah. We'll both be here to help her."

"All right then," Mrs. Ortiz said. "I'm gonna miss you, Lynn. You make sure you bring Tyler down for a visit soon. And take him to see your father in California. I'm sure his family would like to see him." Then Mrs. Ortiz turned her attention to Tyler. "I'm gonna miss you, little guy. You come and see me soon, okay?"

"Mom, you're gonna miss your flight?" Lynn told her.

Mrs. Ortiz hugged her daughter and grandson, then Emily. She turned to AJ. "It was nice meeting you, AJ."

"Nice meeting you, too, Mrs. Ortiz," AJ replied.

"You take care of my daughter and grandson."

AJ looked at Lynn and Emily. They nodded. "I will."

Mrs. Ortiz kissed Tyler on the forehead, then boarded her plane. The four of them stayed until the plane took off.

"Why did you guys make me say that?" AJ asked Lynn and Emily on the way back to the car.

"She thinks you live here," Lynn told him.

"Why didn't you tell her I don't?"

"Because," Emily answered. "If we told her that, she would've made Lynn and Tyler go back to Phoenix."

"And that's the last place I want to take Tyler to right now," Lynn added. "It's not like you really could stay. Summer's over. You'll be going back to work soon, right?"

"Yeah," said AJ. "Next week. I wanted to talk to you about that."

"Sure. How about you and I take a walk when we get home?"

"Okay."

They all reached the car and got in. Lynn sat in the backseat with Tyler while Emily sat up front with AJ. They drove in silence, with exception of the radio blasting. When they reached Lynn's and Emily's house, Brian was outside, shooting hoops. He came over as soon as he saw the car pull up.

"Hey, people," he said as they got out of the car. "Where did you go?"

"We went to drop Lynn's mom off at the airport," AJ said as he got Tyler out of the car. "She's on her way back to Phoenix."

"Oh." Then Brian pulled something out of his pocket. "This is for you, Tyler." He handed Tyler a plush little basketball. "It's best to get started early."

Tyler smiled and laughed as Brian made faces at him. Lynn studied AJ as he and Brian played with Tyler in the living room. It looks like Tyler's AJ's son. AJ just went into that father-mode so easily with him, Lynn thought. I shouldn't let him do that. It'll just confuse Tyler. I have to put an end to it. But how? AJ looked up at Lynn and smiled. She smiled back.

"Brian, could you and Em watch Tyler for a while?" AJ asked him. "I need to talk to Lynn."

"Sure, go ahead," Brian told him.

"Come on, Lynn, let's take a walk." AJ grabbed her hand and pulled her outside.

"What's up?" Lynn asked.

"I'm leaving in five days," AJ began. "I don't know when I'll be back. My job requires me to travel for long periods of time and besides, I live in Florida. See, I'm in the music group, Backstreet Boys...."

"I know," said Lynn.

"You know? How do you know?"

"You'd have to be blind not to have noticed. I knew that first day I met you that you looked familiar. It bugged me and bugged until I went to the store the next day and saw your face on a magazine. And I like your music. It's really good."

"Why didn't you say anything?"

"Because I figured if you wanted me to know, you'd tell me yourself. I assume you came to Seattle to get away from the public. I read in that magazine that you were supposed to be vacationing in the Bahamas."

AJ smiled. "That's what we told this one reporter, which we really shouldn't have done. It spread around so fast that's where we were going to be. So instead of going there, we came back here without a word to anyone. This is the last place anyone would expect us to go."

Lynn laughed. "I bet you all learned your lesson."

"We sure did. Now we try to keep our plans secret. People usually don't find out until after we've left. Anyway, I just wanted to tell you that. I'd been trying to tell you all the time I was here, but there never seemed to be a right time. There's something else I wanted to tell you."

"What is it?" Lynn looked at him suspiciously. "You got a girlfriend somewhere in Florida?"

"No, but I was hoping I'd have a girlfriend somewhere in Seattle," said AJ. "You know how much I like you, right?"

"I've had an idea, but I can't get into a relationship right now. I have to think about Tyler and what's best for him."

"I know. But I want to be there for you and for Tyler. It seems that I've grown attached to you both. Please, Lynn, I just wanna be with you. Woah, deja vu."

"Huh?"

" 'I Wanna Be With You' is the name of our songs from way back in the day," he explained.

"Oh. Well, I can't say I don't like you. I do, a lot. And Tyler just loves you...."

"So what do you say?"

"Okay, AJ. We'll give it a go, but I'm not promising anything. And you do realize what you're taking on, don't you?"

"Of course I do. I wouldn't have asked if I wasn't willing to take along everything that comes with the answer."

Lynn smiled. AJ pulled her close and kissed her. They felt the fireworks going off throughout their bodies. AJ deepened the kiss and it went on until they were both breathless. When they parted, AJ grabbed Lynn and spun her around, laughing. Lynn gave him a short kiss on the lips right before he put her down. Then they walked back over to the house.
