Chapter   Four

“Alex, thank you so much for letting me stay here,” Destiny said, as she sat down next to him on the couch in the living room.

“It’s no problem. How do you like your room?” AJ asked.

“It’s lovely. I like the soft yellow color,” Destiny said. “It reminds of sunshine.”

AJ smiled. “So, are you going to contact your family or what?”

“Yeah, sometime soon, but not now. I was thinking of going back to Harvard, but everybody that knew me there would be totally freaked out if I came back. Especially after they heard I was dead.”

“What about clothes? It seems to me all you have is the clothes you’re wearing.”

Destiny looked down at herself. “I would think all my credit cards have been canceled and my bank account closed, so I don’t have any money. Except the $300 dollars in my purse. I think it was a gift from You Know Who.”

“Most likely. Well, put that in a bank account,” AJ told her. “I’m take you shopping tomorrow.”

“Well, if we’re going shopping tomorrow, then I’ll need my money.”

“No, you won’t. It’s all on me.”

“What?! No, I’m not letting you do that.”

“Seems to me you don’t have a choice,” said AJ.

Destiny thought for a second. “Okay, fine. But as soon as I can, I’m paying you back.”

“There’s no need....”

“Yes there is,” she said. “You’re doing so much for me, Alex. Please, just let me do this.”

AJ could hear the pleading in her voice and knew she felt she had to do it. “Okay, fine. If it’ll make you feel better.”

“It will,” Destiny assured him. “Are you going to tell Amanda I’m staying with you?”

“I will, but not now,” AJ said. “Why don’t we go to McDonalds and grab some dinner?”

Destiny laughed. “Sure. If there’s one place I watched you return to everyday, it’s McDonalds.”

“It’s my second home,” AJ joked.

The two of them laughed, then headed out to eat.

Destiny woke up the next morning in her room. She looked around her and thought about all the things she could put on the walls. I wonder what my parents did with all my stuff, she thought. Then she spotted her dog, Paris, and smiled. Boy, was she glad to have her back. Destiny got up and put on the silk bathrobe that AJ lent her, then gathered up her clothes and went downstairs to the laundry room with Paris following close behind. She tossed her clothes in, added detergent, and put the washing machine to work. Destiny knew Paris was hungry, so she put food in the bowl AJ had set up for her in the kitchen. Then she headed upstairs and into the bathroom down the hall.

She turned on the shower, took off the shirt and boxers AJ lent her and hopped in the shower. Destiny reveled in the feel of the hot water on her body. Pretty soon, the mirror was steamed up. After a while, there was a knock on the door and Destiny heard it open. Her first thought was to cover herself, but the she remembered the opaque shower curtain and calmed down.

“It’s just me,” AJ said, sticking his head through the door. “Just wanted to tell you that I put your clothes in the drier.”

“Okay, thanks,” Destiny said.

“I can bring them up to you when they’re done.”

“That won’t be necessary, Alex.” Destiny stuck her head through the curtain and smiled. “But thanks anyway.”

AJ smiled back. “Sure, no problem.”

He was about to close the door when temptation got the better of him. He stuck his head back through the doorway and watched as Destiny washed her body. He could see the shape of her body through the curtain. AJ could tell her body would look far better than it did now without the curtain in the way. Then he thought, What the hell are you doing? and closed the door. He headed to his room and proceeded to take a cold shower.

Destiny got out of the shower a few minutes after AJ left. She put on the bathrobe and towel-dried her hair as best as she could. Then she went downstairs to see if her clothes were dry. She checked them. Still a little damp. Destiny put them back in the drier and figured in about five more minutes, they’d be dry. As she walked toward the kitchen, she heard the doorbell ring. Wondering if she should answer, AJ spoke through the intercom by the doorway.

“Destiny, could you get that for me? I just got out of the shower and I’m not dressed yet.”

Destiny pressed the button and said, “Sure.”

“Thanks,” AJ said.

Destiny walked to the front door and opened it. There she saw Amanda standing. Amanda looked the woman in front of her up and down. She saw this woman had just stepped out of the shower a few minutes before. She also saw this woman was very beautiful.... and wearing AJ’s bathrobe. Before Destiny could introduce herself, Amanda spoke up.

“Who the hell are you?” she asked.

“My name’s Destiny Morningdove,” Destiny said. “You’re Amanda Latona, right?”

“You’re damn right I’m Amanda Latona, AJ’s girlfriend.” Amanda pushed Destiny aside and walked into the house. “Where’s AJ?”

“He just stepped out of the shower,” Destiny told her. “He’ll be down any minute.”

As if on cue, AJ came down the stairs, pulling on a T-shirt. “Who was at the door, Destiny?”

“The woman who used to be your girlfriend,” Amanda said angrily.

AJ stopped dead in his tracks. “Amanda. I wasn’t expecting you. What are you doing here?”

“Well, clearly you weren’t expecting me for a while,” she said, as she looked at Destiny. “If you wanted to see other people you could’ve just told me, AJ. You didn’t have to go sneaking around behind my back.”

“What?!” AJ said, stunned. Then he looked at Destiny and immediately saw how Amanda would assume AJ was cheating on her. “Baby, Destiny’s an old friend who came to visit me.”

“Oh really?” Amanda wasn’t buying it. “Just out of the blue? Did she just fall from the sky?”

AJ and Destiny looked at each other in amusement at that remark. Amanda didn’t miss it.

“Forget it,” Amanda said throwing her hands up. She turned to Destiny. “If you want him, fine, you can have him. But I’m the one he loves.”

Amanda headed towards the door, on the verge of tears. AJ looked at Destiny, who nodded her head toward the laundry room. He nodded his head in understanding and went after Amanda.
