History:: A new team for 1997-98, the Icebreakers are based out of Upper Marlboro, Maryland, a Washington D.C. suburb. The team was not very succesful in the standings in their maiden season, but managed to create its fair share of controversy in very little time. After the 'Breakers head coach recieved a game misconduct in a November game vs. Raleigh, he refused to send his team back out to play, prompting the referee to declare a forfeit. The league office overturned the decision, and orderd the two teams to finish the remaining 5 minutes or so before a December contest in Raleigh, therefore creating the longest game in ECHL history.
