THE MEDLIN FAMILY

You're listening to "She'll be comin' round the mountain"

<bgsound src="mountain.mid"> THE MEDLIN FAMILY

There has been a Richard Medlin here for over 300 years...The first to come over was Richard Medlin and his wife Rachel....They sailed from Devon in the Downs on the Carolina and arrived in the Carolinas April 1670......Many researchers believe that this Richard Medlin was born April 4, 1647 in Redruth, Cornwall, England.....This would make him 23 years old when he arrived in the New World....This makes sense as he and Rachel had no children when they arrived....There are many descendancy charts linking the Medlins here to this Richard....I do not have proof of it but it is probably true....My documented proof goes back to my g-g-grandfather Richard Medlin who was born 1800 and died in Jackson Co.,Ala in 1841..He was an ensign in Capt. A. Coffey's Company in the Battalion of Jackson County Mounted Volunteers from Sept 8, 1836 until Sept. 11, 1837..This batallion fought in the Florida Seminole Indian Wars...His son, my great-grandfather, Richard Henry Medlin, was born October 20, 1840.

Richard Henry and his brother, Joseph, were college students living in New Hope, Alabama in 1860. When war broke out, they enlisted in the 37th Tennessee Infantry, Co.E which was comprised mainly of men from the Southeastern part of Madison County, Alabama...particularly the communities of Owens Cross Roads, Berkley and New Hope..After about a year of service, he was sent home due to measels and was there when the Federal Army captured Huntsville and the surrounding areas and got caught behind enemy lines.

He then joined Captain Gurley's 4th Alabama Regiment Cavalry, Co. C...He was captured October 24, 1863 and spent the duration of the war in prisoner of war camps...He was released from Fort Deleware, Deleware in the Month of May, 1865 after the surrender.

His mother, my g-g-grandmother, Lucinda Childress Medlin, had all three of her boys in prisoner of war camps. New Hope(her home) was burnt to the ground by the Federal Army...Her daughter-in-law Elizabeth Wright Medlin had a young child under 3 years of age at the beginning of the war....This child was lost in the war, either due to starvation or exposure...

On the Descendancy Chart below, I have begun with my Richard Medlin of the Indian Wars...I have absolute proof through him...Before that, it gets a little hazy....As I get proof, I'll add another link....

UPDATE ON BARTHLYNN

>
Last year on January 20th, I lost my darling Mother After 15 years of being her caregiver in her valient fight against Alzheimer's....I immediately became ill....I blamed it on exhaustion and grief.....I was tired of doctors and illness and believed that I would get over it with rest but When I became so fatigued and breathless that I could not walk from one room to another without gasping for air I went in for treatment....This past December, a week before Christmas, I was diagnosed with Sarcoidosis, an auto-immune disease that is non-curable but treatable....It had attacked the lymph nodes in my own body...It has attacked my lungs....But it can attack just about any organ in your body......I am now in treatment...steroids and compounds that I breath in my lungs....I am also on oxygen almost 24 hrs. a day...But my doctor believes he can get me into remission in about 5 months....The problem is that this disease almost always rears it's ugly head again....My mother, husband and I have had an incredible experience for 15 years in our journey with Alzheimer's.....Now that I am on a new journey of my own, she is not here to help and lend me moral support....But my wonderful husband is...He is my friend and my caregiver when I am just too exhausted to even get out of bed.....My genealogy has taken a back seat for the past 10 years....Every aspect of my life has taken a back seat....My life became caring for my mother...her needs....her care.....When we lost her, I was unable to speak of it or put the information online....If you have wondered what happened to me....If I have not responded to emails...If my web pages are not updated...That is the reason....I don't know how much work I can do on my genealogy....I will have to work around my disease....Thank you for your prayers.....

This company was raised by Captain Frank B. Gurley in the summer of 1862. It became part of Russell's 4th Alabama Cavalry Regiment later that year. This Company saw a lot of action and fought at Chickamauga. This webpage has a personal narrative of history of the Regiment.....A list of the Recipients of the Southern Cross of Honour from Jackson, Madison & Marshall Counties in Alabama....Roster of the men who served in the 4th and Photographs of Reunions at Capt. Gurley's home in Gurley, Alabama....

MEDLIN FAMILY REUNION-STATESVILLE, NORTH CAROLINA

Started in 1957 by Joe Medlin, Sr., the Jeff Medlin family reunion has been held annually on the first Sunday in August occurring on or after the 4th of August to celebrate the birthday of Jefferson Davis Medlin, the third son of Henry Medlin, who was born on August 4, 1870. Since Jeff Medlin lived his later years with his son, Joe M. Medlin, Sr. of Statesville, it has been a tradition to hold the reunion in Statesville, North Carolina. Largely through the efforts of Joe Medlin, his son Dan, and Dan's wife Faye, this reunion has become a successful tradition. Since 1989, the reunions have been held at Statesville Skateland owned and operated by Ted Medlin, the son of Joe Medlin, who with his wife Alma, have so gratiously hosted the last reunions. All Medlins, their friends, and guests are always welcome at the reunions.
