September 26, 1926 -- Group of 73 investors led by Charles Hughes purchase team
November 18, 1926 -- first game (lost to Boston Bruins)
Played at Border Cities Arena, Windsor
Called "Detroit Cougars" because majority of players were from Victoria Cougars,
British Columbia, CN - a member of Western Hockey League which competed with
NHL
Finished last place (of 44 games only won 12)

Arrival of Jack Adams as coach, beginning of 35 year association with team
Move to Olympia Stadium, Detroit

Due to financial difficulties during World War II, NHL left with six franchises, referred to
as "original six"
