H.O.T. Strategy October 2002 Setting Expectations
Your positive outlook as a BerneUnionREADS Volunteer Tutor
is what will make you successful. Know in your own mind
that all children can learn, and make it clear to the
students that they will not fail. Also:
*Express your confidence in the students and praise specific accomplishments.
*Every time you work together, the students learn that they will succeed.
*Make your students comfortable, but establish that you are in charge.
*Set the tone and expectations for your work. Do not say, "would you like to"
which may lead to a "no" from the children. Instead, say with excitement
"Let's....!" so your students follow your lead.
