Bhavan's Gandhi Vidyashram, Kodaikanal
Bhavan's Gandhi Vidyashram (or BGV, as it is commonly called), is a
co-educational residential (boarding) school, nestled in the picturesque and
beautiful hill station of Kodaikanal, Tamil Nadu , in Southern India.
It is run by the Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan, instituted by K. M. Munshi in the 1930s to educate children in Indian culture and traditions.
BGV was consecrated on the 13th of May, 1983 by Swami Chidbhavananda of the Ramakrishna Order.
The school started off with Mrs. Premilla Rajan as the principal. The school had 77 students in its first year, and that number has
now grown to over 700. The school teaches students from Standard VI to Standard XII.
The students are housed in "Niketans", namely Dhruva, Prahlad, Madhva, Khambar (for the boys), and Shabari (for the girls). At least
one teacher is assigned to each niketan as a warden.
One of the best features of BGV is that emphasis is put not only on studies, but on the all-round development of the student. Students
are encouraged to paticipate in sports, literary and cultural activities. As a part of the curriculum, students have to take up 2 sporting
activities and 2 extra-curricular activities, which range from dramatics to gardening. Students belong to one of four "Sangams - Chera,
Chola, Pallava and Pandya" and competitions are organized on a sangam-basis, with each sangam competing against each other.
