"The painting represented a landscape near Port Lligat, the rocks of which were illuminated by a transparent and meloncholy twilight. In the foreground were the olive trees with its branches cut and without leaves. I knew that the atmoshere I had succeeded in creating in that view served as the setting for an idea, a surprising image, but I did not yet know what it would be.
