The   Persistance   of   Memory,   1931

"The painting represented a landscape near Port
Lligat, the rocks of which were illuminated by a
transparent and meloncholy twilight. In the
foreground were the olive trees with its branches
cut
and without leaves. I knew that the atmoshere I
had
succeeded in creating in that view served as the
setting for an idea, a surprising image, but I
did
not yet know what it would be. I was about to
turn
off the light When I suddently "saw" the
sollution. I
saw two soft watches, one of which was hanging
sadly
from one of the olive tree branches."
